Using a multimedia CD-ROM environment, "OncoMedia" offers 13 of the courses presented at the 1996 and 1997 Advanced Education Courses, organised by the European School of Oncology. Founded in 1982, the European School of Oncology is a non-government aided, private, non profit-making organisation, whose aim is to provide health professionals with the opportunity to improve their skills in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Advanced Courses are in-depth programmes suitable for cancer specialists, senior residents in training, oncological nurses, cancer researchers, postdoctoral fellows and individuals who are seeking contemporary information in oncology practice and research. The CD-ROM includes the following powerful features: between 20-30 slides per lesson, each with an accompanying narrative which is also available as a printable transcript, the ability to scroll through the lessons either manually slide by slide, or view automatically as a complete presentation a notepad facility and the ability to bookmark key slides. In addition, there is complete background information for each lesson including an overview, selected references with "ref-links" to the abstracts, and biographical information about each author, and a "self-test" where users have the opportunity to complete five multiple choice questions. This product is developed to be "user-friendly", and the information can be easily accessed without prior training or referral to complex manuals. The study of this CD-ROM by ESMO Board Certified Members grants 13 hours, one hour per lesson of ESMO MORA CME category B credit points, provided credit is requested before May 2000.
