Book Description

A successful addition to the Oxford Core Text series, this new book provides concise yet comprehensive coverage of the essential topics in oncology. Primarily using a systems-based approach, the book highlights important issues with case histories looking at the conditions that are clinically relevant to the experiences of the medical student. Integrating the student's knowledge across pathology, surgery etc. and psycho-oncology and palliative care, the authors have included summary boxes, further reading and similar learning aids to ensurean easy-to-use, accessible learning/revision aid.
The textbook covers the principles and practice of oncology and is divided into two sections, the first being the general principles of cancer, including chapters on aetiology, epidemiology, biology and pathology of cancer. Other chapters describe the pathology of cancer, cancer prevention, staging and psychology. The principles of cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are described. There is a detailed chapter on modern palliative care of cancer. The second half of the book gives information on each of the common cancers grouped into specialities. When each cancer is discussed the aetiology, presentation, signs on examination, investigation and managementare outlined. Each chapter concludes with up to ten articles to which the student can be referred for further reading. Each chapter is liberally illustrated. The chapters have bullet points for ease of reference for the reader. Finally, most chapters are illustrated with a number of case histories, in line with modern educational practice.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is a well written and interesting book covering a topic that isn't always well understood, and is a book that will serve the reader well in every year of their course. GKT Gazette This is one of the more attractive texts on oncology that I have seen published. Oncology This book is a valuable reference that encompasses the whole breadth of surgery within three tomes. Increasing specialization tends to limit the breadth of knowledge and expertise to increasingly narrow fields but those boundaries are transgressed within this single text. Hospital Medicine The key phrase to be associated with this book is "comprehensive without being dull" ... This is a well written and interesting book covering a topic that isn't always well understood, and is a book that will serve the reader well in every year of their course. GKT Gazette "This is the best oncology undergraduate textbook in the market. The authors have done a remarkable job by responding to the demands made by their junior colleagues in writing a long-awaited oncology textbook suited for students and junior doctors. The contents are detailed enough and of high quality. The graphics truly complement the individual chapters on system-based cancers. Some contributors have made commendable efforts in addressing evidence-based practice by suggesting web links and reputable journals for further up-to-date reading. I am immensely impressed by the mere mention of important studies and statistics in the first few chapters. This book will guarantee a good grounding in the basic principles of clinical oncology and instill confidence among students to read more sub- specialised textbook in future." Ngoo Kay Seong, University of Aberdeen "This, like most of the other Oxford core texts, is very good and came in handy during the oncology block in third year ... you can find the majority of what you need to know here." University of Glasgow Students Magazine
