Useful analysis of many key concepts in group conflict,
By Epictetus (Hong Kong) (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One for All: The Logic of Group Conflict (Kindle Edition)
This is a well written and thorough book. Most of it seems to be the author rehearsing the arguments of others, e.g. the views of Adam Smith and Bacon on dueling. However, it is useful to have the views of great thinkers on aspects of group conflict collected in one place. Less valuable, to my mind, is where the author gives his own opinions. Some are well thought out, others are on shakier ground. For example, the author takes Mother Theresa as a paradigm of a virtuous person--while it may upset many people to say this, and without having to agree with the counter argument oneself, there is a counter argument that Mother T's drive was as much her own image as the good of her flock. The author should have addressed this argument instead of taking Mother T as an ideal and putting great weight on her in his argument. He is better where others such as Bacon have done the analytical thinking. If you are involved in or affected by group conflicts, this is a useful overview of many key concepts and arguments, and will help you develop your ideas. "EPICTETUS" |
