Move the device selector switch at the top of the remote to the DirecTV receiver position. Then, press the Menu switch and toggle down to "Parental, Fav's & Setup" and press "Select". In the next menu select "System Setup" and on the next menu select "Remote". Change the "IR/RF Setup" to "RF" and continue following the menu instructions. The receiver will lead you to quickly and easily set up your new RF remote. You'll be able to change channels through walls, doors and ceilings. Use to control a receiver in a closet or cabinet.

If you want to control more than one receiver with radio frequencies, you'll need to purchase an RF remote for each receiver. But at about $25 each, this is much less expensive than running miles of wires all over your house. And you won't have to see the unsightly receivers and their accompanying wires. One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice RF Remote, June 4, 2009
This review is from: One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
The Directv RC64RB remote works pretty well. Once in a while you may have hit a button twice or maybe it requires a little more pressure to activate the buttons than the regular old IR remote it replaced.
To activate the remote you will have to locate the reciever ID on the back or bottom of your reciever and enter the last 6 digits in following the instructions on page 12 of the manual. Also as a previous reviewer stated you will need to change the mode in the receiver from IR to RF. Keep in mind once you have changed it to RF the old IR remote will not control the reciever anyomore unless you go back to IR mode. I give the remote 5 stars, However I have one problem with this system. I can only program 1 remote to the receiver. I attempted to program a second one but was unable to do it. Maybe it can be done and I just haven't found out about how to do it.
My reason for the RF remote is on a few nights we wanted to be able to record 3 shows that came on at the same time in our livingroom, but the receiver will only record 2. We have another DVR in our Kitchen. So I ran the Coax out of the Kitchen receiver to the livingroom TV and programed the KITCHEN receiver for RF. We can now watch the shows on the Kitchen DVR in the kitchen or in the livingroom. Or in other words we now have the capability to record up to 4 shows at once and view them from the living room from either receiver (2 in the Kitchen and 2 in the Livingroom). The remote controls the Kitchen Receiver from the livingroom through 3 walls!! It has one other benefit if you get behind watching your favorite shows you now have 2 DVR's doubling your capacity. We catch up in the off season. Yeah we probably watch to much TV. lol. But this is where the problem shows up if you take the RF remote to the kitchen you have to remember to bring it to the livingroom! That is why I want to be able to program a second remote.
I would also check to see if your model receiver will work with this remote. Another reviewer said it did not work for them not sure why.
Other than that enjoy.
By the way the remote does have a nice back light. But it is not on unless you touch a button then it remains for a few seconds. If you are in the dark you probably don't want to hit the wrong button to activate it again after it turns off. Directv was nice enough to put a little light button on the right side the the remote. Not on top actually around on the right hand side. A little hard to activate which is good. You don't want it coming on to easily.

1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated model - You don't need to buy this for 3 reasons, October 22, 2011
This review is from: One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
We just bought a set of RF remotes for our new DIRECTV receivers at home. I had considered buying these in advance from here, but I'm glad I waited to get the system installed first. Here are the three main reasons why you don't need to buy these from here:

1. DIRECTV makes these available for $20 themselves and you don't need to pay anything for SH. Here it works out to $25 based on today's price. That could, of course, change in the future are prices change, but DIRECTV has a flat $20 charge.

2. The ones provided by DIRECTV are fully covered by their warranty while these ones aren't. We've had one RF remote go bad so far and they changed it with no hassles. If bought here, they don't provide this service and you're SOL.

3. The ones from DIRECTV are the newer models - they don't come with this ridiculous looking antenna (this model is well over 2 years old now). The DIRECTV remote is a plain ol' remote with the RF transmitter built in - no antenna. Much cleaner to look at and to use, not to mention the hassle if the antenna fell out and got misplaced.

As far as the set up is concerned, it takes no more than 5 minutes tops. Easy to set up and use. A must-have if the receiver is not kept in an open space for IR signals.

Hope this helps.

1.0 out of 5 stars Works, but most remotes given from DirecTv do it FREE...., September 2, 2011
This review is from: One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
Bought this from a different seller and quickly found out it is not needed. The DirecTv remote given to me by the installer almost a year ago (back in Sep 2010), model# RC65RX, along with my HD DVR, model# HR24-200 (the one with the blue circle lights on front and box is piano black)...has RF built in. DirecTv usually sets all systems up with IR initially, but it still has RF capabilities. With the remote using IR, I was unable to change channels since relocating my box inside a cabinet (LED TV on wall and wires run thru wall to back of cabinet). I spent $40 on this stupid remote and the antenna they want you to put on the back is just stupid. I quickly returned mine and called DirecTv for a better solution, only to find out my current setup works just fine, just needed a setting changed. Much like the setup for this remote, updating my existing remote to work off of RF, was super simple! So, before buying this...try the following things...
*** Do all steps with direct, unblocked access to your DirecTv box!! ***

-Press "Menu"
-Scroll down to "Parental, Fav's & Setup", press "Select"
-Scroll down to "System Setup", press "Select"
-Scroll down to "Remote Control", press "Select"
-Make sure "Program Remote" is highlighted and press "Select"
-Scroll down to "Advanced" and press "Select"
-Make sure "IR/RF Setup" is highlighted and press "Select"
-Make sure "Remote Type" shows "RF" (you will have to select it and change from IR to RF"
-Highlight "Continue" on bottom of screen and press "Select"
-Then just follow the steps on the screen to switch to RF!!

If this doesn't work, there are on-screen instructions how to switch back to IR. I then recommend calling DirecTv first to see if you qualify for a yearly box upgrade, or maybe only need a new remote, which they typically supply for free! So, why spend $40 unnecessarily??!?!

5.0 out of 5 stars It works - after proper setup., April 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
I purchased this remote so I could watch TV in the next bedroom. It worked fine in the room with the box, but I wanted to use it from the next room and, of course, control a different TV. I had to call support for instructions. They walked me thru the procedure to disable the IR input to the box and enable the RF input. Now it works fine. These instructions are not in the book that came with the remote. The instructions are on page 71 of "Directv HD Receiver User Guide"(#1647544A)that came with the receiver box, but they are not very detailed. My advice is call support for setup.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not RF compatible with legacy receivers, June 11, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this remote to replace the original remote that came with my legacy RCA DRD486RH receiver that has a number key no longer working. Before purchasing this remote through an Amazon vendor I made certain that it was a RF model (RC64R) based on another persons review stating that some vendors are shipping the non RF version (RC64). I did get the RF version as advertised. The unit did not come with any instructions but you can download a manual from DIRECTV's website. Unfortunately the only manual available is for the RC64 not the RC64R. I could easily program the unit to work with my receiver but it only works in the IR mode, not RF. Since the manual has no instructions on setting up or re-programming the RF mode I contacted DIRECTV tech support and asked them why there is no instructions on the RF mode for this remote and how to make it work! The bottom line is that you cannot make the RF mode work with my receiver. Additionally, if you actually want instructions on the RF mode for this remote you need to do a web search. You can find instructions on how to turn on the RF mode and program it to a particular receiver, but not from DIRECTV tech support.

Specifically from the body of an email from DIRECTV -
"The receivers that are compatible are our HD receivers you would need a H21 or higher for a standard HD receiver and for the HD DVR you would need an HR20 or higher. The R16 and higher are the only standard DVR that is RF compatible.
In addition, this remote in RF capable with DIRECTV manufactured receivers only."

I think DIRECTV should put the last statement in their product literature but that is another story.
I particularly like the fact that this remote has one button that can be used to turn on/off both the TV and the receiver. However, since I cannot get the RF capacity it is not a usable remote for my application.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Remote - great price!, May 15, 2009
This review is from: One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
this remote does everything it says it will. It goes through multiple walls and gets rid of all those other pyramid receivers and transmitters. These are great and allow you to wire your house to add a guest bedroom using the box in your living room to give them all the channels without having to pay for an extra hookup. A nice way to treat your guests. Or...you can do the same for your own bedroom and keep the extra remote in the bedroom and save having an extra box for your dish or direct tv.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product!!, May 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: One For All RC64RBK IRF/RF DIRECTV Backlit Universal Remote Control (Electronics)
This remote works through multiple walls in my home. The setup took less than 5 minutes - just read the other reviews, and listen to the tips they provide (especially about having to change the receiver to RF mode, and when programming wait for all the lights to flash before moving on to the next step because the instructions on screen do not tell you that). The only thing I don't like is that we have not yet figured out how to change the input mode with this remote (say, switch over to the DVD player from the TV). Maybe there is a way to do it but I guess we're too lazy to read the instruction manual.

Overall, it's a great product, and can be easily set up if you just read the other reviews (I am not technologically savvy but it took me less than 5 minutes to figure out).

We have a tv on our screen porch that is slaved to the reciever in my elderly parents bedroom. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but everyone hated having to go to their room to turn it on, change channels, etc.

My parents, 87 and 91, were very frustrated with it, plus my wife and I couldn't use it all once they went to bed early each night.

We ended up buying 3 of these remotes so my parents could still control the set from their room. (all remotes must be rf once you change)

The setup could be a little better, but we complicated the process by having 3 remotes for the one box. All of our recievers are the newer ones we got in August, 2010. We did not have to use the little antennas.

Now that it's done, we love it. Everyone is happy. The screen porch is about 20 feet from their bedroom and there have been no reception problems. Now on warm evenings, my wife and I can watch what we like after the parents go to bed. My Dad is happy he can turn it on and watch what he likes during the day with no frustration.
