Book Description

In an effective writing workshop, young children grow in leaps and bounds, and within just a few months, the changes in their written products can dazzle you. And after 30 years of studying her students' growth in the writing workshop, Lucy Calkins knows one of the most powerful ways to support good writers: clear, purposeful writing conferences.

In One to One Calkins and her colleagues Amanda Hartman and Zoe White show you the practices and principles that create effective conferences. They dispel the myth that master teachers have a magic touch and show you that effective teachers do not reinvent the conference with each student, but rather use predictable, principled interactions that follow a few simple frameworks. In One to One, you will learn:

  • repeatable conferring frameworks that are the foundation of effective conferring
  • specific teaching methods that you can match to your students' needs
  • strategies for tailoring conferences to English language learners
  • ways to use conferring across the content areas
  • on-the-run record-keeping systems that are efficient, powerful teaching tools.
Good conferring, like good teaching, relies on your ability to communicate effectively with children, and the skills you develop as you learn to confer will improve your teaching abilities in all areas, including developing curriculum, leading strong minilessons, and untangling the classroom chaos that can derail a smoothly running workshop. Read One to One to improve your conferences and your teaching. But most important, read it to improve your students' writing every day.

Lucy Calkins is the author of the popular firsthand classroom materials Units of Study for Primary Writing and Units of Study for Teaching Writing, Grades 3 - 5, as well as several companion resources for literacy coaches and principals. Most recently, Lucy has published a curriculum for the reading workshop, Units of Study for Teaching Reading, Grades 3-5, and she has written the Common Core Reading & Writing Workshop series for Grades K - 8. In addition, Lucy is the author of numerous foundational professional texts with Heinemann, including The Art of Teaching Writing and One to One. She is also the author of The Art of Teaching Reading. She is the Founding Director of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University's Teachers College. As the leader of this world renowned organization, Lucy works closely with policy-makers, superintendents, district leaders and school principals to instigate and sustain school-wide and system-wide educational reforms. Lucy is also the Richard Robinson Professor of Children's Literature at Teachers College, where she leads the Literacy Specialist program. Lucy and her husband John are the parents of two sons, Miles and Evan.

As a staff developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Amanda Hartman has helped a dozen large urban schools establish state-of-the art reading and writing workshops across every grade level. She was previously a dual language teacher at P.S. 165 in Manhattan. In addition to her staff development work, Amanda speaks at conferences and universities across the country on topics of literacy instruction and social justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Conferencing strategies for any age, May 24, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: One to One: The Art of Conferring with Young Writers (Paperback)
My students' growth in writing is directly attributed to the continual conferencing they have with me or other advanced writers. While conferencing, I find various phrases starters and conferencing techniques from this book pop into my head. This book offers a framework in which to teach the writing strategies and process. This book was intended for early childhood writing, but I find the framework directly applicable to in a high school setting. I am amazed how this book has helped my under-performing,inner city,below-grade level high school scholars to reflect on their writing to produce meaningful prose. The conference transcripts are the most valuable.

I have become a Lucy Calkins fan. She has helped move my teaching of writing to another level. This book focuses on being efficient and productive in individual conferences with children - related to writing. Great resource!
