Rockin' the Hip-Hop house!,

I love this CD/DVD. Features new material by Del, J5, Heiroglyphics, Swollen Members, Dilated peoples and some other sick artists. This cd is an even full sound of some of the best talent in hiphop. The sound is deep, bassy and original. I love "the Del" showing up on a few other tracks. The DVD is a nice addition. Featuring the movie One Big Trip. A bunch of guys and girls going cross-country doing the best "highs" while waiting for the millenium and interviewing people on the street. The DVD also features other extras. Like interviews. News reports and the informercial had me laughing non-stop. I highly recommend this item.

I'm not here to complain about how disappointed I am, mostly because I'm not. For thirteen dollars, this is quality product...proportionately speaking of course. Anyhow, the cd aspect--it's not so great, not so bad. Soweto is a great track indubitably and there's a couple other head nodders, I didn't expect anything fantastic lyrically considering the roster. I will argue that the film is interesting and entertaining, however it's not a film. It's more of a documentary and what do you expect...that's the description. It's more accurately a combination of both. It's a story depicted as a documentary. It's not a fabulous voyage, it's not a wonderful adventure, it's just a curiously interesting movie about the people this group encounters, the places they visit, the obvious conflict and dilemma involved among those, and the things they do recreationally along the way. There is a climax, there is conflict, there's emotion, happiness, sadness, etc. Many elements of a thorough drama. The plot isn't exceptional but like I repeat, what do you expect? It's satisfactory by any means though. Just to watch at least once. So to conclude this, if you're expecting this extremely great film that never made a theatrical release...you'll be disappointed. If you're a realist and expect the creative depiction and artistic expression of a collective perception on life...you'll be easily satisfied. I give it a five because it's unique enough in its own that it was done for the 'hip-hop' venue. I based this opinion on the overall product though, not each element of cd vs. dvd. But collectively, it's worth a five to me.

Hiero kills this CD. Soweto is the sickest. Not to put down any of the others either because the CD is ill front beginning to end.

This album puts to shame all that horrible commercial hip-hop that people will buy this year. In 13 tracks perfect tracks you get to enjoy the finest artists in hip-hop today. From Del, and the rest of the Hiroglyphics crew, J-Ro of tha Liks, Royce Da 5'9", Dilated, Jurassic 5, to my favorite artists on the whole planet (and the most slept on group since they are from Canada we Americans have no idea what we are missing across the border) Swollen Members. This album is like a fine wine. It goes down so smooth that you do not even notice it. And yet you are left still wanting more. You will not find a better cd put out this year.

Somewhat dissapointing,

What first drew my attention to this album was when I first heard the track Soweto with Hiero and Goapele. The beat for this track is Willams Hype! Even the garbage lyrics put over this beat doesn't ruin the track. Sadly, apart from this track, and Hydra, the majority of this album is garbage. J5's 'Verbal Gunfight' is the a terrible song and does not match the quality of their usual music. I have never heard bad lyrics out of these artists before and so I was surprised when I listened to this album. The only thing supporting this album is quality Domino and Automator beats which tend to draw attention away from the spoken words which in my opinion, should have no place on this CD. I'd much prefer this soundtrack to be pure intrumentals rather than the crap they down onto these beautiful beats. If you need a reason to purchase this album, then just remember the other side is a DVD. I'll admit this DVD is interesting but it was made with little more purpose than to serve the bratty spoiled kids that feel they need to pop E with every meal. These kids go across the U.S. ingesting toxins and filming randomness and various states of high. The apparent 'star' in this movie, David Bittenbender, who was also the producer and the interviewer in front of the camera has twisted what could have been a truly great film. This film suggests that it compiles the views of many different Americans through interviews with the general public. If you think that this film brings out new meaning or something deeper during these interviews, you are sadly mistaken. With common questions of "What do you think about America?" and "What do you think about Y2K?", it is obvious that Bittenbender is just conducting this interviews to kill time .... However, the music laced to the film is amazing with perfectly placed tracks from Souls of Mischief, Mos Def, and Common. Unfortunately these tracks are not found on the soundtrack side of the disc. I will have to admit though, that the film is interesting to watch and the footage is put together quite nicely thanks to some chill editing by Jason Goldwatch. If you think two half decent sides of this disc will add up to a good purchase, than perhaps this disc is for you.

I love the CD side; it's great hip-hop. But the DVD side itself, maybe oversimply put, is just about a bunch of white people having fun. There is not even much hip-hop music in the movie. Not what I (or you?) expected.

The soundtrack and film seem at odds and are really two different animals. However, makes sense in a coming of age theme. Guys road movie that has a nice universal appear, lots of different characters surviving on the planet. The swamp scenes with gator guide and the silver guy are my favorite. The lost tourist who just ignore the camera's dumb question is dope as well. I think the film is better on the whole then the soundtrack. I love those artists though, just one those kind of spotty hip-hop comps. Overall got for a deal and I'm happy. If your about 30 something and takes you back to that 90's hip-hop life for us caucasian persuasian kids living west coast style. Good for the whole fam. Thought you knew.

Strangely entertaining as it is...this is the perfect video to pop in your player if you're thinking about being under the influence of ANY kind of hallucinogen. There are scenes thrown into the movie just to f*ck with your mind...and it works. =]
This is the best $14.00 I've ever spent on a video...hands down. The clips of real-life interviews depict a wide variety of people that are found throughout the US...and that's a story told in itself. There are big ideas hidden between shots of comical relief in a way that I found to be refreshing. ...but then again...I'm not your typical American Idol fan... =] My vote is, buy it. The people that gave this documentary a bad review, just didn't see the bigger picture behind it. If you have an open mind or just want to be entertained, it's well worth your money...you just might learn something.

ok. This is well worth the money just for the SOUNDTRACK, and most people I know purchased this album FOR the soundtrack. There are new and unreleased Hieroglyphics, Del, Jurassic 5 & Dilated Peoples tracks on here that are all pretty decent and well worth owning. If you just bought this album as an album of underground hip hop, you probably were getting a good buy.
Then there's the Dual-disc factor. Many may not know this, but it is my understanding that this is the FIRST EVER dual disc CD/DVD, which makes it interesting in itself... Unfortunately, One Big Trip, the MOVIE, is extremely boring and uninspired. If I were buying this strictly for the purpose of getting a "new movie" I wouldn't waste my $10 on it or $15 or whatever. The movie is garbage and not worth bothering with. So don't if you don't want to, but don't sleep on the tracks (GUOMD is great) ;) In short, if you like Hiero & company's music, then you should buy this. It's worth it. |
