An 'in demand' session bassist and a fine pianist make for a highly impressive session. Bill Mays is a somewhat overlooked but very good, jazz improviser as evidenced here! This recording is very much in the 'Bill Evans' tradition, The musical telepathy between pianist Bill Mays and bassist Ray Drummond reminds one of an album that might have been made by the Bill Evans-Scott LaFaro piano/bass duo.

Mayes and Drummond were regularly featured on the Bradley's calendar and represent the heart and soul of the style of music you would hear in the historic University Place saloon. The format for music that Bradley Cunningham established was simple - a good piano player and a good base player - because that was the style of jazz he enjoyed the most. He built the room around the music and you would often find him at Table #1 listening to the great players. This CD is pure pleasure for me and brings back many fun times sitting with my uncle Bradley at Table #1.
