Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A playful city romp comes about when a young girl walking with her mother sees what looks like an engagement ring slip from a man’s pocket. The two pursue the man to return it, but with each turn of the page, there is a new impediment or distraction, and always in increasing numbers. “But four little babies / block the path.” “Then five frisky dogs / spread out like a fan.” And so forth, all the way up to 20. The ring is unobtrusively returned in the nick of time, and the girl and mother move on to a bakery (which just happens to have a giant wedding cake in the window). The somewhat repetitive text is minimal, arranged in the form of free verse and with a vocabulary that will be accessible to readers in early stages of mastering the craft of reading. Géser’s lightly colored watercolors are simple but have just enough detail to realistically depict the city-street action while keeping with the subdued tone of the story. An unusually sweet and unobtrusive counting tale. Preschool-Grade 2. --Randall Enos

Children will enjoy the spirit of the chase (and an easily spotted black cat on each spread) in this pleasant introduction to courtship conventions. (Kirkus Reviews)

[has] an air of both excitement and romance. (Publishers Weekly)

The author-illustrator takes readers on a running, hopping, mommy-tugging, obstacle-packed adventure through attractive city streets as one small girl chases one young man who has dropped a bright ring. (School Library Journal)

This book is a charming and intelligent tale of a little girl who "does the right thing" without regard to an expectation of a personal award. She helped someone in need and in the nick of time. Her actions proved heroic. She showed leadership and perserverance and integrity. This type of role model is very refreshing to observe no matter hold old the reader may be. The illustrations are delightful in their whimsy and graphically artistically pleasing. Finding the black cat on every page just produces smiles that cannot be helped. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I will purchase copies for some of my local libraries here in Maine.

I love brave little girls who do the right thing against the odds. I also loved following the black cat whose continued presence became more delightful with each appearance and seemed to lend a special testament to the little girls endeavors. In addition this book has a counting theme that makes counting fun!

This book is cleverly written and beautifully illustrated. I have given it to all my friends and family with children. One of the children made her father read it to her several times before going to bed -- and then asked to have it read again as soon as she got up the next morning!
