Book Description

September 9, 2008 4 - 8 yearsCat in the Hat's Learning Library
THE CAT IN the Hat puts to rest any notion that money grows on trees in this super simple look at numismatics, the study of money and its history. Beginning with the ancient practice of bartering, the Cat explains various forms of money used in different cultures, from shells, feathers, leather, and jade to metal ingots to coins (including the smallest—the BB-like Indian fanam—and the largest—the 8-foot-wide, ship-sinking limestone ones from the Islands of Yap!), to the current king of currency, paper. Also included is a look at banking, from the use of temples as the first banks to the concept of gaining or paying interest, and a step-by-step guide to minting coins. A fascinating introduction is bound to change young reader’s appreciation for change!

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, Captivating, but one important flaw June 8, 2009
By Mom
Format:Hardcover
We love this whole series -- informative yet interesting to read over and over. This book, however, has one important flaw that I hope the author/publisher will correct. The US Mint does not (nor has it ever) made coins by melting the metal and pouring it into a mold as described (enumerated in step by step fashion in fact) in this book. Coin images are stamped onto blanks using a die press. I cannot knowingly give my child a book to read that contains incorrect information.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay March 10, 2010
By E
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
We have many books from this series, and we love them, so I was excited to read one about money. But, it was just okay. I have noticed that I like the books by Tish Rabe better than by this author. I was hoping that this book would talk more about our current currency, but it was more about the history of money across the world.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not like other Dr. Suess books - Not Good April 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I love many / most Dr. Suess books. One Fish, two fish in particular. This book does to even come close to any of those books. It feels like it is trying too hard, it doesn't rhyme in any places, it belabors parts of history that feel out of place in the overall story / flow of the book.

Cannot recommend it at all when there's are so many better options.

Delivered in less than a week regular mail..Liked the option to order used book at a lesser price. Easy to read by child. Liked the way the book compared how money started and came to be what we use today.

2.0 out of 5 stars False stereotypes for children June 1, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is great if you want to perpetuate falsehoods to your children about money in a rhyming format. Simply stating that money arrived because people used to have to barter and they needed a medium of exchange in order to do so is a myth. In "Debt: The First 5000 Years" by anthropologist David Graeber he clearly establishes that debt precedes money and that there is not a shred of historical evidence that can support money coming about because farmer a not being interested enough in farmer b's wares to trade with him. Stick with a real Suess book and if you want to teach kids about money try learning about it yourself first, as it's something very few have any scientific understanding of.

This book is an insult to Dr. Seuss. It's terrible. It's not fun at all, rhyming is awful and the facts are way, way too dense for young kids. Read more
