Book Description

What would you do if your best friend was accused of attempted murder?

From bestselling Christian fiction author Daniel Patterson comes the Amazon bestselling religious fiction mystery, One Chance. One part mystery, one part suspense, and a just touch of romance, One Chance is an inspirational Christian fiction tale about family, friendship, love, honor, and courage.

One Chance

When Officer Penelope Chance walked in the front door of the Franklin, Florida clinic, she headed straight for the exam rooms at the rear of the building. Doctor Jacob Gordon heard her footsteps echoing on the tiled floor and came out to see who was there. He bumped into her as he rounded the corner.

"I got the call a couple minutes ago. I came right over," she said. "Is he going to be okay?"

"His injuries are beyond what I can deal with here in the clinic," he replied, concern in his voice. "I've stabilized him. An ambulance is on its way to transfer him to Grace Memorial. He's in Exam Room Two, on the left."

Penelope steeled herself and slipped into police officer mode. "Can he talk?" She started to walk past him and Jacob grabbed her arm.

"He doesn't need any more stress right now..."

"We need to know who did this, Jacob. I need to talk to him while I can. In case...in case I can't talk to him later."

Jacob sighed. "I'll give you a few minutes. Penny, he's beat up really bad. I barely recognized him."

With the exception of a double homicide twenty-three years ago, nothing big happened in tiny Franklin, Florida. Most of Officer Penelope Chance's cases were relatively minor incidents. In spite of her prayers, the truth was sometimes she wished a case like this would cross her desk. Something to get her blood pumping and give her brain a good workout.

So when she gets the call about an attempted murder, she can't help but get excited... But when she learns who the victim is... And who's suspected of the crime... her blood runs cold. What starts out as an attempted murder quickly turns into a murder mystery that's going to leave Penelope questioning her faith in the people around her and in herself.

Will Penelope find the culprit and the truth behind everything that's happening in her peaceful little town, or will the case go cold and land in the unsolved mysteries file? Is this a test from God for Penelope and everyone else involved or just one of many bumps in the road to come?

Find out in One Chance, the bestselling debut mystery novel from Christian fiction author Daniel Patterson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, Romantic Suspense Thriller....INDEED! October 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you can figure out this mystery thriller ahead of the game you are a better man than I MacGee. This amazing plot is so intricately interwoven, and brilliantly written, that I was turning pages as fast as I could until 4 a.m. when the story ended. Besides some quirky pronoun inconsistencies, which threw me every now and then, I still feel the overall book deserves five stars. Buy it. You won't regret a second.

Enjoyable, easy read. Just the right amount of mystery, crime drama, faith and love. It was not too deep or complicated.

This was a great Christian mystery. I was interested from the 1st sentence to the last. The twists and turns of the plot made it very interesting; I read it in one night, couldn't put it down. Looking forward to the next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars one chance November 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Set in Franklin, Florida, One Chance is the first Penelope Chance mystery. She is a detective on the small Franklin police force and has recently become engaged to a local doctor. Her parents were killed in a house fire when she was a young girl and she was taken in by Doug’s family. Doug is her best friend, like the brother she never had. She has become a detective, but she still lives with the guilt of surviving the fire when her parents did not.
In a quiet town, Penelope wishes for something that would come across her desk that would have her use her brain, something out of the routine. Then, the weekend arrives and everything happens at once. Doug is accused of trying to kill the other town drunk one Friday night. Doug insists he is innocent; however, the victim identifies Doug’s truck and everyone knows Doug doesn’t let anyone else drive it. Then, Doug’s ex-wife shows up after two years to drop off their 5-year-old son and then can’t be reached to see when she is returning. Other strange events occur all over this same time period to make Penelope wonder what is going on in her little town.
This is a fair mystery. It isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either. The characters seemed somewhat stilted to me. I liked Penelope’s reliance on God in all things and her living her faith without fear of what other people think. I didn’t think it was necessary that her fiancé spend the weekend at her house when someone breaks into his home. He could have stayed at a hotel or with some other friends. I did like how Penelope stuck up for her best friend when everyone just looked at him as the town drunk and figured him as guilty. However, I just didn’t feel the tension or suspense as I have in other mysteries. I am interested in reading the next book in the series to give this author another chance in the mystery genre. The second book in the series is due in the fall 2013 according to the back of book number one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fair to Middling... February 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The story line was okay, a bit suspenseful with an interesting twist. The characters were underdeveloped and bland. With a Christian theme it lacked depth of a life centered around the gospel. It's as though God is merely the go-to guy when things are sticky. Surprisingly the romance toyed with inappropriate living conditions for safety and a bit of innuendos that could have been left out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disapointed November 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I give this book 2 stars for the content and the moving action that continues throughout. Author has a good plot and lays it out nicely. However, as an author myself, I'm embarrassed at the lack of editing. This book reads like a rough first draft. Past and present views in the same paragraph. Words out of order in sentences, among other things. With a good editing job this book could be a 5 star book.

1.0 out of 5 stars One because I can't go lower January 7, 2013

Good thing this was free or I'd be ticked. Plot could have been great if it weren't so cheesy. Too many typos and grammatical errors as well.
