Book Description

September 1999 3 and up
One Child combines a simple text with richly colored illustrations drawing on the imagery of an old stained-glass window that is gradually cleaned to reveal the beauty underlying the pollution. A hopeful book about the environment.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-This book reads more like a tract than a story. Throughout the first three double-page spreads, a dispirited girl stares at a television screen with her stuffed animals scattered around her. The entirely blue pictures reflect the gloomy news of forest destruction, ocean pollution, and animal exploitation. Then an epiphany occurs, and the youngster takes action to reverse ecological disaster. Planting a tree, walking to school, and writing letters brighten segments of the gray and dying world around her. As other children take similar measures, the pages brighten. Hope and ecological health revive. The quasi-religious tone is reinforced by illustrations that recall stained-glass windows. More meditation than story, this title lacks child appeal, even for those who get past the first gloomy pages.

From Kirkus Reviews

Disheartened by environmental destruction, a girl determines to do all she can to reverse the process in Cheng's optimistic invitation to personal action. The girl plants a tree, walks to school instead of riding, cleans up the yard, writes, sings, marches, and speaks for the world, then imagines, in an affecting final series of illustrations, what would happen ``if the children of the world did all that they could.'' Woolman bases his ink-and-colored-pencil illustrations on the metaphor of the gradual cleaning of a stained-glass window; his early images are blue and gloomy, but frame by frame, a glistening world emerges. His depiction of the brilliance achieved aids the simple, restrained text enormously, as he adds the layers needed for making the text specific. This review is from: One Child (Hardcover)
The realities pictured in this book can be scary, but they touch on the truth about our ever-growing environmental problems that need real solutions and real people to solve them!Children have the power to have a profound impact on the future of our environment and this book allows them to know that hope exists if every child lends a helping hand. Parental guidance should accompany initial reading of the book to help answer questions. This book would make an excellent addition to personal collection or classroom library!
