Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Langen, Jacqueline Navin, and Lyn Stone join forces to produce a trio of novellas that nicely captures the flavors of the medieval and Renaissance holiday seasons in all their richness and warmth. A young Highland lass rescues a wounded warrior and brings him love as well as healing in Langen's charming story, which has a Cinderella ending; a fugitive noblewoman, an orphaned baby, and a gallant knight vanquish a villain and form a familyAjust in time for the New YearAin Navin's spirited "A Wife for Christmas"; and an independent-minded English noblewoman determined to discourage a Scottish suitor finds that her efforts are having the opposite effect in Stone's delightful "Ian's Gift," a tale with a "Gifts of the Magi" twist. Laughter-laced and sprinkled with children, these heartwarming, diverse, yet equally satisfying historical romances will brighten readers' holidays and are perfect for an afternoon by the fire with a mug of spiced cider.

4.0 out of 5 stars Medieval Christmas romance, October 21, 2005

This review is from: One Christmas Night (Harlequin Historical) (Paperback)
From the back cover:

One Christmas Night Long, Long Ago...

A wounded nobleman falls in love with the brave young woman who rescures him in Ruth Langan's "Highland Christmas".

A Noble knight uncovers the secrets of a lady who is disguised as his servant in Jacqueline Navin's "A Wife for Christmas".

Two lonely hearts find themselves the objects of an intricate matchmaking plan in Lyn Stone's "Ian's Gift".

Join in the revelry of Christmas from the Scottish Highlands to the English countryside with these three tales of Medieval Holiday Merriment!

And my review:

The first story, Highland Christmas, was only okay. The characters were well drawn, and ones that you liked instantly. My biggest complaint with this story was the author's frequent point-of-view changes. It was really annoying to read his thoughts, then her thoughts, then her father's thoughts, then one of the kid's thoughts, then back to hers again in a single scene. It got really confusing to keep track of who was thinking and feeling what and that really detracted from the story. Three stars.

The second story, A Wife For Christmas, was very good. This was the novella that I kept the book for and made it worth my money. There were no annoying point-of-view switches within a section, the plot was good, the characters were good, the history was good. I just loved the heroine of this one; she was so brave, willing to risk her life to protect those she loved. And he was a good man - you could see it from the beginning. This one was worth a re-read. Five stars.

The last story, Ian's Gift, could not hold my interest. I pushed through until the end of the second chapter, but my mind kept wandering so much that I gave up. This was one of the stories that felt like all plot and no character development. One star.

As always with romance anthologies, if you find one good story, you're lucky. This one has one that makes it worth the read.
