3.0 out of 5 stars One Cop's Story: A Life Remembered
A candid portrayal of the author's 28 year career in the NYSP. A career often fraught with danger and full of personal obstacles but also a career of adventure, excitement and oftentimes humor. The reader will warm to John Briant's sincerity and warm personality. John Briant takes you on a tour of his life while modestly downplaying his often heroic achievements. I know...

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes one feel like your riding in the car with him., August 6, 1998
By A Customer
Very good book about the life of being a Trooper.Makes you see that there are many good sides to being a trooper, but there are also many downsides. Very well written to show there are ups and downs, but in the end there is much pride and satisfaction in doing a good job and being a good "cop". As an ex-trooper myself, I firmly believe that anyone interested in law enforcement as a career would really enjoy reading this excellent book.

4.0 out of 5 stars my story-Jerry Wink, February 5, 2010
This review is from: One Cop's Story: A Life Remembered (Hardcover)
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a fellow Trooper.I served the Division of New York State Troopers from 1970-2000.Having served in the US Army attaining the rank of Major, I too can appreciate the hardships and dicipline of the Troopers life. The book was an excellent read from the beginning until John became a BCI member.I having served road patrol for 16 years, was accepted into the BCI and made Sergeant and eventually promoted to Senior Investigator.I headed up Troop "A Narcotics Unit, then the Major Crimnes Unit, the Stolen car squad, Violent Crimes Investigative Team(VCIT) and ended my career in charge of Buffalo Speical Investigative Unit (SIU).Where John's book took a disgruntled turn was when he claims he never made Senior Investigator because he didn't "kiss-ass"...I took exception to those remarks...well I can assure you, and you can ask my guys, I always spoke my mind and absolutley NEVER KISSED-ASS....John, you were doing very well with this book until the last chapter or so where you bounced from Troop to Troop and my impression is that you are a whiner and paid the price for it...I wouldn't trade one day of my time in the State Police...I've been retired 10 years and miss it dearly...believe me, no "horseshoe up my ass"..hard work and loyalty to the job.Maybe you should have thought about that when you wanted to make Senior!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best police books ever published!!!, June 30, 2005
This review is from: One Cop's Story: A Life Remembered (Hardcover)
WOW... this book is AWESOME!! I am a police officer in upstate New York, and I am very impressed with John's way of telling his story. He gives great details, and it doesn't take much of an imagination to be taken away to the places in his book! I have always been interested in the New York State Police, and just wish I started my career earlier and became a Trooper!
I do wish I had the authors address, as I would very much like to contact him! [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting, educational look at Policework..., December 10, 2002
By
I thoroughly enjoyed "One Cop's Story", John Briant showed me an 'inside look' at what life in the NY State Police was like in the middle of the 1900's when the State Police Barracks were called "Barracks" because that was actually where the troopers did most of there living. His portrail of this life in what now seems a by-gone age is a testament to the devotion and spirit of the troopers from the days of many years ago. And Mr. Briant doesn't sugar-coat any of it - he shares the good as well as the bad and together they weave into an excellent story of life on the Force. I truly enjoyed "one Cop's Story" and recommend it to all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for someone considering law enforcement., July 1, 1998
By A Customer
If you would like a good autobiography on the life of a state trooper, you will enjoy this book. For any young person in a Criminal Justice Course of study, and planning a career in law enforcement I think "One Cop's Story: A Life Remembered" should be must reading.

DON'T read it expecting to find out a whole lot about laws and proceedures in law enforcement. John's career dates back to World War II.

DON'T read it to get the facts on salary and perks in today's New York State Troopers. His starting pay was $4.25 per hour.

Don't get the book for all the pictures. They are all in black and white and not a single picture with a drawn gun, nor a criminal in handcuffs.

DO buy the book because if, like most people interested in a career in criminal justice, you have watched one too many episodes of "Cops" on tv with the lights flashing, high speed chases and guns drawn, you will get a good perspective on what the real job really is.

DO buy the book if you are interested in the relationships that are created within the troop and barracks.

DO buy the book if you want to see from first hand experience the stress and strain, being a cop, can put on a persons family life.

DO buy the book if you are interested in reading an autobiography of an interesting life in the New York State Police. So often when I see a trooper, all I see is that intimidating uniform. John Bryant lets us look behind and beyond that uniform and see the person. John shares his life struggles his loneliness, his fears, his successes and his failures. "One Cop's Story: A Life Remembered", its good reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Cop's Story, June 7, 2009

I lived in Nedrow during the time John served in LaFayette. I had some encounters with troopers and almost expected to see a story about myself in there, but was relieved when I didn't make it. John was a good cop, but not such a good storyteller. He goes on and on about the most mundane things. The only reason I made it through the book is because I was looking for events I lived through and people I knew.
The one thing I found surprising was how his fellow troopers treated him. I suspect if you could talk to them you would find out John was leaving something out of his story. I don't recomend this book to anyone.
