Arnot places his models inside and outside, by water, on porches overlooking water, boats, in the breezes that windows allow as they move curtains to shape the transience of the moment. The eyes engage and invite and reveal both the privacy and the intimacy of the model's thoughts. There is an obvious trust between model and photographer and that is why the images are so relaxed and natural. The word that keeps coming to mind when perusing this monograph is 'elegance'. Yes, these images are erotic but on their own terms - no need for frank exposition when the models can portray all of that and more with stance and glance and gaze.
It will be interesting to see where David Arnot's next monograph will take us. This an artist of the first order and his works are magnificent: ditto the models! Grady Harp, June 11
Another thing I look for in these types of books are a consideration for using a variety of ethnicities; the models range from dark to very light-skinned, and this reflects the world as we know it. I believe this is a testament to David Arnot's understanding that men come in all shades and colors, not focusing on just one type of skin-tone (which results in a biased and boring outcome, in my opinion), and is a huge accomplishment on his part.
If you noticed, I failed to give this book a five-star rating, as I have recently been spoiled by the most amazing work I have ever seen (Player's Two by Rick Day); before I had acquired that book, however, this was the centerpiece of my collection, and a true representation of what I look for in a collection of male form photography. You will not be disappointed with this book, I guarantee it.
Mr. Arnot is a genius with his camera, and he brings so much beauty into the world with his eye and aesthetic. The book is worth the price, and I look forward to more of Mr. Arnot's outstanding work in the future. ONE comes with my highest recommendation.
