Book Description

February 1994
Personal stories of successful people--those not so well-known as well as renowned celebrities--illustrate how failure, rejection, and even tragedy can serve as significant turning points in life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Writing with freelancer Houston, Pine, the president of a New York City literary agency that bears his name, calls on his celebrity friends, as well as the lesser known, to relate how failure or loss became a turning point in their lives. We hear from Walter Cronkite, George Burns, Milton Berle, Pat Riley and others who capitalized on a disappointing twist of fate, resulting in changed careers and perspectives on life. Also included are Pine's conventional tips--"Pine's Pearls of Wisdom"--on how to carry on after seeming failures and turn negative experiences, such as job loss and rejection, into something positive. First serial to Reader's Digest.

From Booklist

The message of this little bucker-upper for those who've had a setback, particularly a lost job or opportunity, is basically that of the perennial showstopper "Heart": (hum along, please) "Mister, you can be a hero, you can open any door--there's nothin' to it but to do it." Literary agent Pine and collaborator Houston make a book out of the ditty by rounding up lots of successful persons' stories about the closed doors they've run into and either reopened, kicked open, left behind to find another one, or built. Since the tale-tellers include the famous likes of Carol Burnett, George Burns, Tommy John, and lots of other showbiz and sports figures as well as Mary Kay Ash (yes, the Mary Kay) and Wayne "Erroneous Zones" Dyer among non-showbiz stars, Pine and Houston's book might take off more powerfully than others of its ilk, even if its advice isn't really any different from what any decent job counselor would give. That the Reader's Digest plans to boost it will certainly help, too. Ray Olson --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Having been fired from a job which I loved (an editor) for writing about the TRUTH - I found that this book enabled me to redefine who I was and where I was going. Consequently, I just finished my first novel - a passion that has been a lifelong dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars How a bad thing, can turn into a better positive opportunity, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This book teaches you how you can overcome negative or bad things that happened and that makes you feel down or depressed. It shows that most of the time, when something happens, it can lead to a much better opportunity. So many inspiring examples are given and shows you how uplifting it can be reading about famous people that went through struggles before they became famous. Success-street is not easy-street! It is a highly recommended book, definetly worthwhile reading, especially when things don't look they are going your way.

I along with my some of my co-workers were displaced after 20+ years. I really enjoyed this book. It helps me retain a positive attitude. I enjoyed it to the extent that I ordered copies for a few of my friends.
