Editorial Reviews

Double vinyl LP pressing of the 2009 album from the legendary Rock vocalist. Ian Gillan is renowned both as a member of Deep Purple, as well as leader of Gillan. Despite often being called a 'Heavy Metal Pioneer', Ian Gillan never felt he really belonged to that music category. His all time music inspiration and heroes are names such as James Brown, Ray Charles, Little Richard and the rockers of the '50s. It s with no surprise that all true Ian Gillan connoisseurs will find all these influences on this release. A 100% rock album, One Eye To Morocco will conquer new and old Gillan fans with an impressive collection of songs showing a big variety of moods and colors. From classic Gillan Rock to the Arabic sound of the title track plus soulful ballads and bluesy mid-tempo rockers. 12 tracks. Edel.

It was a gloomy day as I sat down to review my copy of the new Ian Gillan solo album, One Eye to Morocco. Dark clouds were building in the sullen sky and drops of rain spat down intermittently on the world outside my window. Then I pressed play on my cd player and everything changed! No, a deluge was still threatening to be unleashed outside, but I no longer cared. I was transported--momentarily distracted, mind and soul--by the music that poured forth from my speakers. And what a wonderful distraction it is, too!

One Eye to Morocco is Ian Gillan's first album of original solo material since 1997's Dreamcatcher and I'm happy to report that the long wait was more than worth it. Gillan, of course, is the legendary and inimitable voice of Deep Purple and his solo endeavors are always fun, romantic, and often whimsical departures from the structure of that band. This album is no different, reveling in its liberation and freedom to explore various forms of music. You will find an amazing variety of influences, mixing together like exotic spices, intertwined amongst one another like lovers, all held together by Gillan's smooth, powerful, and instantly recognizable voice. Thoughtful, loose, and easy, it is so easy to let yourself go and to get lost in the velvety poetic seduction of this album. It will take you away, it will soothe your mind and soul, it will rock you and make you forget your inhibitions and dance in the joy of it all.

The musicians that Ian has brought in to help him produce this magnificent album are of the highest caliber. Guitarist Michael Lee Jackson shows off his versatility and fluidity, moving from smooth Eastern tones, to crunchy rock and roll chords, to blues and even Spanish-style guitar with equal ease and style.

Easy listening, bluesy, a little rock and a lot of Gillan's magical voice. Gillan's band suits this music just fine, its not Deep Purple but its not supposed to be. This CD is so relaxing from start to finish I highly reccomend to any music fan and especially all Deep Purple fans (you know who you are).

For his age Ian Gillan keeps himself very active doing interviews playing with Deep Purple and also working on his solo products. His latest offering 'One Eye To Morocco' will please most fans. Ian takes the opportunity to record some great songs that are a little different to his Deep Purple material. This album consists of 13 tracks including 1 bonus track. Would recommend 'One Eye To Morocco' to all Ian Gillan fans.

One of my favorite albums of all time is Gillan-Glover's "Accidentally, On Purpose".
This album is similar in many ways, the vocal phrasings, lyrics, and aura, only this CD is a bit on the heavier side overall. More heavy guitars and drums, similar to Accidentally's "I Can't Dance To That".

What I really love about this is that Ian is getting older, and he's letting it show in his singing and writing. He's heroic. I love this album!

Brilliant cd. A varied and imaginative setlist, covering different styles, very well managed and interpreted. The band does well with its function and Gillan sings with exquisite taste.
His best effort since TOOLBOX, though, of course, different from what is expected of the singer of Deep Purple.
If you liked ACCIDENTALLY OR PURPOSE,this album is in the same vein. highly recommended

Best CD I have bought in years!! Saw Deep Purple 35 years ago...Ian still got it!! A little older, but so mesmerizing. Better Days has become my favorite song. If you are looking for music with great blues and jazz influences, this is it
