4.0 out of 5 stars A nice blend of traditional favorites and new songs
I really liked this CD. I don't have any Kelly Price CD's, but I was looking for a CD with a little bit of gospel feel and didn't think I'd get that with Toni Braxton or Destiny's Child (DC tries, but they just can't get it down). So I purchased this and have been quite happy with it. A couple of friends have heard my copy and say they're going to pick it up too.

Kelly Price, with this Christmas album, showed once again that she can sing over any track given to her. Unfortunately, the same CANNOT be said for her guest stars.

Let's clear two things up. The track listing on Amazon lists seven songs. There are actually 11 songs on this CD. Also, another poster gave the CD one star because Kelly lets her kids sing on one song. I'm not gonna lie- her kids CANNOT sing and they absolutely ruin the song. Whoever let her put it on the CD wasn't thinking very clearly. But it's just one song-that's what the skip button is for!

The tracks, in order from my favorite to least favorite, are:

Mary's Song: What lovely lyrics! (written by Kelly) And Kelly and Wynonna Judd really turn it out on this one. I wouldn't have thought of Wynonna for a duet partner, but she's just as powerful as Kelly in the vocal dept. and their voices blend well.

One Family: Again written by Kelly, this song features not her kids, but her mother, aunt, grandparents, and I'm assuming a sister or cousin singing various verses. Kelly has the strongest voice of them all, but when you hear those voices blend at the end and sing: "We are one, one family, through the year, not just Christmas." I played this while we were putting up a few Christmas decorations and everybody with me was just smiling. It's just a song that makes you feel good.

Oh Come All Ye Faithful: This version has a real choir feel, with Donnie McClurkin, BeBe Winans, Shirley Murdock, The Williams Brothers, and a duo (I think) called Ragsdale who I'd never heard before, but they can ALL sing.

In Love at Christmas: An orignal song sung with Mary Mary. Really nice mellow beat and great lyrics.

Go Tell It: Written by Donald Lawrence, this has a fabulous midtempo beat and really passionate vocals from Kelly.

Christmas Medley: It consists of Little Town of Bethlehem, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Strong vocals and nice arrangements here.

Ave Maria: I liked this version. She sings in a quiet, subdued tone, so she's not going to blow your speakers out, but it's still powerful.

What Child is This: A sophisticated, non-traditional version with a real jazz feel.

Messiah Has Come: Written by Donnie McClurkin, the vocals are strong, but the song is fairly short and doesn't register with me that much.

Silent Night: This version of Silent Night is perfectly fine, but not a standout.

If I Lose Christmas: This is the infamous sing with Kelly singing with her kids. What's so bad is that it's not the kids singing a line or two, but singing the chorus three or four times. They cannot sing, and it is very hard to sit through the song. A definite skip.

Still, even with that song, this CD has been in constant play at my house since I purchased it. I'm pleased that I picked it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great Stocking stuffer & more..., December 13, 2001

This is one of Kelly's finest projects. I loved all of her others, but this one tops the list. My fav is "Ave Maria". Very mellow, but deep. A must listen. My least favorite is the "If I Lose Christmas" song. I first heard it at a store and thought it was just some kid singing on one of their karaoke display machines. But to my surprise when I asked the sales person, they said, "Nope, that's on the CD!! Nevertheless, I bought it...and thank God for the skip button!!!!!

This is a CD that I feel will be worth playing for more Christmases to come. Every song is touching and very moving. The soul stirring Silent Night all the way to Ave Maria. Wonderful Kelly keep singing and you will always get my money.

Kelly Price, with this Christmas album, showed once again that she can sing over any track given to her. Unfortunately, the same CANNOT be said for her guest stars. Though Mary Mary and Winona Judd turn in great performances on "Mary's Song" and "In Love At Christmas" respectively, her family on the title track show that they aren't the best singers in the world. This is especially true when Kelly's kids sing on "If I Lose Christmas", which made me lose my appetite. A rule of thumb: If your kids can't really sing, don't put them on the album!

But I still can't front on the great performances that Kelly turns in, and as with most R&B singers, she sounds better singing gospel like on "Christmas Medley", "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Ave Maria". If you love Kelly's voice and can't stand her singing about people not accepting her weight size or about heartache, then this album is a good escape from her usual fare.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kelly, you should have spent more time on this album, November 26, 2001

I love Kelly Price and I think she's fabulous. However, this album sounded like she threw it together in a week. I can understand that Kelly wanted her family members to be on this album. I think it's a great idea. However, her family cannot sing nearly as well as she can. It was painful to hear her tone deaf children singing on "If I lose Christmas". Her "Ave Maria" could have been incredible if she would have gotten a language coach to teach her how to pronouce the Latin. "Mary's Song" is beautiful, but as a whole, the album is quite terrible. I'm sorry Kelly, I know how much you love Christmas, but this was a second rate effort. Sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars Had a lot of potential, December 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: One Family: A Christmas Album (Audio CD)
I was really excited about this cd until I heard it. She sold me on it when she gave an interview on a local radio station. The snipets I heard were great. It wasn't until I bought it that the tone deaf folks singing made this a flop for me. Too bad because this is the first cd of hers I ever bought. The best song is "In Love at Christmas". that's the only one I can really get into. Perhaps it was the professional singers in the background-hmm. Sorry Kelly-maybe next year.
