From the Back Cover

How do you send a killer to the grave when he’s already dead?

Having narrowly averted an (under)World War, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’s voodoo queen just keeps on giving—leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.

Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter. Now, every All Hallows Eve, he takes physical form to torture innocent women before burning them alive. This year, however, a determined Cat and Bones must risk all to send him back to the other side of eternity—forever. But one wrong step and they’ll be digging their own graves.

The ending of the book felt as if she was in a hurry to turn in her book to be published and didn't have time to finish so she just ended it very abruptly.

I would love to see more side books of supporting characters.

I discovered Cat, aka the Red Reaper, and Bones shortly after the release of Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, Book 4). Fans on Ilona Andrews' forum (Authors of the Kate Daniels Series Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1)) directed me to this wonderful series. I devoured the first four books. I was mesmerized by Cat, her family, her world, her abilities, and her team of hunters she created. Cat's trouble with being caught between two worlds and embracing her true self was heartfelt. The chemistry between Cat and Bones had me fixated on their story. I quickly picked up the two spin-offs centering around two of Bones' fellow vampires. (One was okay, enjoyed the other.) However, when it came to THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE, I was left feeling a bit disappointed. It felt as if the magic wasn't quite there. Oh, it had an excellent storyline and plot, but it felt a bit lackluster. So, even though I was eager to get my hands on book 6 (this little beauty), I was still a bit apprehensive.

Five weeks have pass since the events of THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE. Cat can't seem to get rid of Marie's power and ghosts still flock to her. Cat's ghost friend Fabian finally has a request for help: the ghost Fabian is in love with needs help eradicating another ghost and wants Cat's help doing it. Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter and didn't necessarily stop once he died. He's used the fear and torture of innocent women to increase his own power giving him the ability to inflict harm on flesh even when he remains spectral. So, how do you kill someone who is already dead?

I LOVE the Night Huntress series, but I started reading it for the romance more than anything. Now that Cat and Bones are happily married, the romance has taken a back seat to urban fantasy/mystery. I still enjoy the series, but it isn't a reread for me anymore.

Synopsis:
Cat and Bones are trying to enjoy their time as a married couple, but Cat's appeal to ghosts has not yet worn off. Ghosts flock to her like the mother ship. A ghost killed during the witch trials has come to ask Cat and Bones help killing another ghost, Heinrich-the witch hunter. Every year, he is able to become human on All Hallows Eve when he burns women alive to gain power. Add to this mystery a shady government agent trying to take over Cat's old department and you have a pretty good book.

The pacing was better than the last, and it held my attention. Cat and Bones still have sparks but their romance is secondary to the overall mystery. All the old gang, minus Mencheres and Vlad, are present to lend a hand which was nice. I could tell that the government agent is going to play a big role in the next book, because there is a lot of questions left unanswered regarding who he is working for. While I am still interested in Cat and Bones, I really am more interested in her spin off series where the author develops love intrests for all of our favorite characters. I can't wait to see who she pairs with Tate and Ian....did I imagine possibly Cat's mom being thrown in with Ian...maybe wishful thinking.

Overall, I liked this book. I thought it was better than her last but still not as good as the first ones. Again, my reasoning is that I enjoy the love story aspect more than the mystery. Frost is a talented author, and I will definitly check out her next book.

In the lead up to All Hallows Eve, a misogynistic ghost plans to kidnap and kill three `witch' women . . . but not if the Red Reaper, Cat Crawfield and her husband, Bones, have anything to say about it.

Heinrich Kramer was a bad man in life and has become downright evil in death. When Cat's ghost friend, Fabian, introduces Cat to one of Kramer's old victims (now a ghost herself) she and Bones know they cannot let this ghost murder more innocent's.

Meanwhile, Cat's old government squad of supernatural fighters is under new management - a Homeland Security moron called Jason Madigan. The new team leader is keeping secrets and combating Cat's mind-reading with annoying infomercials. . . and he really, really doesn't like vampires. Tricky, since the best in his team are members of the undead under Bones's protection.

`One Grave at a Time' is the sixth book in Jeaniene Frost's `Night Huntress' series.

Okay. So, I didn't love this instalment in one of my favourite paranormal series. I didn't have the best time with fifth book, `This Side of the Grave', and I was disappointed to read that many of the problems I had with that book are carried over into this one. . .

What frustrated me was that Jeaniene Frost pin-points the problem very early on in the book. Once we learn that Cat's deceased uncle, Don, is still hanging around as a ghostly apparition and the new team boss, Madigan, is a Homeland henchman with a grudge against vamps . . . Cat notes that Bones isn't really too disturbed by their piling problems, and he quite succinctly explains his blase attitude.

What used to make Jeaniene Frost's series unique and a titillating treat for fans was her protagonist's instant attraction.
