4.0 out of 5 stars Making the Grave Stick July 27, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I discovered Cat, aka the Red Reaper, and Bones shortly after the release of Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, Book 4). Fans on Ilona Andrews' forum (Authors of the Kate Daniels Series Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1)) directed me to this wonderful series. I devoured the first four books. I was mesmerized by Cat, her family, her world, her abilities, and her team of hunters she created. Cat's trouble with being caught between two worlds and embracing her true self was heartfelt. The chemistry between Cat and Bones had me fixated on their story. I quickly picked up the two spin-offs centering around two of Bones' fellow vampires. (One was okay, enjoyed the other.) However, when it came to THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE, I was left feeling a bit disappointed. It felt as if the magic wasn't quite there. Oh, it had an excellent storyline and plot, but it felt a bit lackluster. So, even though I was eager to get my hands on book 6 (this little beauty), I was still a bit apprehensive.

Five weeks have pass since the events of THIS SIDE OF THE GRAVE. Cat can't seem to get rid of Marie's power and ghosts still flock to her. Cat's ghost friend Fabian finally has a request for help: the ghost Fabian is in love with needs help eradicating another ghost and wants Cat's help doing it. Centuries ago, Heinrich Kramer was a witch hunter and didn't necessarily stop once he died. He's used the fear and torture of innocent women to increase his own power giving him the ability to inflict harm on flesh even when he remains spectral. So, how do you kill someone who is already dead? Cat & Bones do everything they think of to end this witch hunter's existence forever and stop his reign of terror.

The magic is back. I still don't think this latest installment is the best of the series, but it felt like things are coming back together giving me higher hopes for the next book.

What I enjoyed:
1. Cat & Bones are back and stronger than before: no more leaving each other, no more forced separation for an entire book, no more trying to save the other by running off half-cocked. They have weathered the storms and have learned: they are fighting this one together.
2. Cat's growth--Cat has a LONG life ahead of her and is finally realizing it. This realization is changing her outlook a bit, but she is still the Cat we all know and love. She still has her great sense of humor and is full of snide remarks. She has just finally come to realize she can be happy in the moment.
3. Bones--what a hottie! He is growing and developing as well. I loved that even though he still has the vampire territorialism that he has loosened up a bit and is more trusting. I also loved how he seemed to be more of a partner to Cat rather than a teacher.
4. The romance--Cat and Bones' relationship is solid. There were so many small tender moments between them that really made me smile. For those looking for it, there is one sex scene. It's not a Chapter 21, but it was unique and fun. I can honestly say I have NEVER read something like this before. It gives the name "Mile High Club" a whole new meaning.
5. Friends--not everyone got in the book, some had a few pages, and some only had their names mentioned. But those who were there added much to the story and made me smile. Cat's mom is still feisty even though she is still struggling with her change. I actually liked Denise here! Ian--what a hoot! And we meet Tyler the Medium. I absolutely LOVED Tyler.
6. The Challenge--Cat has prevailed against so many things. But how do you fight something that isn't corporal? Something that can use physical violence against you but you can't touch? Something that can't die or be erased? I enjoyed watching Cat tried to out maneuver a crafty old ghost. Cat can't just unleash her Red Reaper skills since she can't physically touch the sly witch hunter. I do wish we could have seen her go all Reaper on everything, but that wasn't in the cards this book.

Things that didn't quite work for me:
1. The villain--every other book revolved around a very personal enemy. That intimate connection gave each story emotion, depth, and gravity that was just lacking here. Think back to books 1-5: Cat had to battle her own prejudices, Ian, Patra, Gregor, and Appollyon. Book 6? Not so much. Yeah, this guy is sick and twisted but only torments Cat because Cat went looking for him as a personal favor to Fabian. And then Fabian was AWOL a lot of the story. I just missed that personal touch. It's just not the same when she goes looking for trouble.
2. The ending--yes, we do get a clear resolution to the problem, but for some reason I felt like the ending was incomplete. It lacked that sigh of satisfaction. The ending seemed to be just quickly summarized and thrown on there.

ONE GRAVE AT A TIME was a nice installment to this series, which I had a hard time putting it down. I like where Ms. Frost is taking Cat and Bones and am glad some of the magic is back. Oh, and as an added bonus, we get a small excerpt from Cat and Bones' Christmas story due out in November called HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. That little snippet was nice and juicy making me want the novella and the next book that much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Firmly urban fantasy....not romance July 31, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I LOVE the Night Huntress series, but I started reading it for the romance more than anything. Now that Cat and Bones are happily married, the romance has taken a back seat to urban fantasy/mystery. I still enjoy the series, but it isn't a reread for me anymore.

Synopsis:
Cat and Bones are trying to enjoy their time as a married couple, but Cat's appeal to ghosts has not yet worn off. Ghosts flock to her like the mother ship. A ghost killed during the witch trials has come to ask Cat and Bones help killing another ghost, Heinrich-the witch hunter. Every year, he is able to become human on All Hallows Eve when he burns women alive to gain power. Add to this mystery a shady government agent trying to take over Cat's old department and you have a pretty good book.

The pacing was better than the last, and it held my attention. Cat and Bones still have sparks but their romance is secondary to the overall mystery. All the old gang, minus Mencheres and Vlad, are present to lend a hand which was nice. I could tell that the government agent is going to play a big role in the next book, because there is a lot of questions left unanswered regarding who he is working for. While I am still interested in Cat and Bones, I really am more interested in her spin off series where the author develops love intrests for all of our favorite characters. I can't wait to see who she pairs with Tate and Ian....did I imagine possibly Cat's mom being thrown in with Ian...maybe wishful thinking.

Overall, I liked this book. I thought it was better than her last but still not as good as the first ones. Again, my reasoning is that I enjoy the love story aspect more than the mystery. Frost is a talented author, and I will definitly check out her next book.

2.0 out of 5 stars The pitfalls of writing after 'Happily Ever After'... September 2, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the lead up to All Hallows Eve, a misogynistic ghost plans to kidnap and kill three `witch' women . . . but not if the Red Reaper, Cat Crawfield and her husband, Bones, have anything to say about it.

Heinrich Kramer was a bad man in life and has become downright evil in death. When Cat's ghost friend, Fabian, introduces Cat to one of Kramer's old victims (now a ghost herself) she and Bones know they cannot let this ghost murder more innocent's.

Meanwhile, Cat's old government squad of supernatural fighters is under new management - a Homeland Security moron called Jason Madigan. The new team leader is keeping secrets and combating Cat's mind-reading with annoying infomercials. . . and he really, really doesn't like vampires. Tricky, since the best in his team are members of the undead under Bones's protection.

`One Grave at a Time' is the sixth book in Jeaniene Frost's `Night Huntress' series.

Okay. So, I didn't love this instalment in one of my favourite paranormal series. I didn't have the best time with fifth book, `This Side of the Grave', and I was disappointed to read that many of the problems I had with that book are carried over into this one. . .

What frustrated me was that Jeaniene Frost pin-points the problem very early on in the book. Once we learn that Cat's deceased uncle, Don, is still hanging around as a ghostly apparition and the new team boss, Madigan, is a Homeland henchman with a grudge against vamps . . . Cat notes that Bones isn't really too disturbed by their piling problems, and he quite succinctly explains his blasé attitude;

"You seem pretty relaxed about this whole situation," I said with mild exasperation, noting the nonchalance in his tone and vibe.
Bones all but rolled his eyes. "Why wouldn't I be? For the first time in years, our relationship is solid, no one's actively trying to murder us, and our closest mates are happy. Blimey, Kitten, if I were any more relaxed, I'd need a smoke."

Yep. That about sums it up, now hand me a cigarette.

What used to make Jeaniene Frost's series unique and a titillating treat for fans was her protagonist's instant attraction. When everyone else in urban fantasy / paranormal romance was hell-bent on the build-up and `will-they-or-won't-they', Frost gave us `they will' with heapings of loved-up bliss. Kate and Curran took four books to seal their mating. Adam and Mercy didn't get hitched until the sixth book. Fans loved and loathed the tension of those relationships - but we revelled in Cat and Bones's guaranteed love, established in book one and maintained (with a few minor hurdles) throughout the series.

Now, it would seem, fans are reading the pitfalls of continuing a story after `happily ever after'. The main problem, for me at least, was the plot-heavy focus on drama and action with little tension between the relationship development of Cat and Bones.

Yes, the Heinrich Kramer plot is chill-inducing and interesting. He's a raping misogynistic ghost who can become corporeal on All Hallows Eve when he wreaks vengeance on `disgusting' females. Great villain, plenty of action and drama. But to balance out that fairly heavy and sinister plot, I felt like `One Grave' needed more love from Cat and Bones and more development from secondary characters.

I miss the Cat and Bones drama. I miss Cat's jealousy over Bone's sex-filled past, and Bones's constant combat against Cat's independent streak. I miss the sex! When Cat and Bones had all these emotional tug-of-wars with each other, it ended up in the bedroom with some interesting and heated couplings. Now, in their staid wedded bliss, they try to spice things up with some weird sexual adventures . . . but it doesn't have the same heat as their Chapter 32 loving after Cat learnt of Bones's heartbroken bedroom shenanigans with Annette. I don't know what Cat and Bones need, at this point. We have at least two more books with them, and I don't know how Frost can spice them up now. Dare I say, an amnesiac plot might be needed to be their relationship back at 0? (I'm sure she could do better than True Blood's Emo Eric this season!).

Missing from this book are my three favourite secondary players - Vlad, Mencheres and his wife, Kira. Vlad, I can kind of understand, since he's getting his own spin-off `Night Prince' series and Frost probably doesn't want to inundate us with him. But Mencheres and Kira haven't really made a substantial appearance since their book `Eternal Kiss of Darkness' when Kira was crowned as Menchere's wife and intent on becoming a sort of vampiric policewoman. I know they've had small cameos in book #5, but I would love to revisit their relationship at length and gauge where it's at now. Instead, we get Spade and Denise, Cat's mother Justina and Bones's best-buddy, Ian. Now, I'm not a fan of Denise and Spade, I find them lukewarm at best and dull at worst. Cat's mother is a more interesting character, as a vampire-hating human who is now a vampire.

The one character who worked, whole-heartedly, for me in this book was Ian. I love Ian. Love, love, love! He's all snark and sexy man-whore who I think has a lot going on underneath. Ian's made even better in this book when a human psychic called Tyler gets a very big crush on him. I don't know where Frost intends to take Ian's character - my hope is for a `Night Huntress World' spin-off, because I think it would be fascinating to read whoever captures Ian's heart and stops his Lothario ways. I have an inkling it might be Justina, judging by some interactions in `One Grave' - I'm not in love with that idea, only because I can't picture Justina as a sexual being. It's too weird as she's Cat's mum who has been an almost-villain in previous books. I just want more Ian. More, more, more!

What else worked for me in this book was the Jason Madigan storyline. This is shaping up to be a very big plot arc - one that could bring Cat and Bones back into the government taskforce fold (which would mean more Tate and Juan! YIPPEE!). Madigan is an annoying and conniving paper-pusher, and I can't wait to read where Frost takes this storyline.

Overall, `One Grave at a Time' wasn't a great instalment for me. I think I'm starting to read the pitfalls of a tensionless happy coupling, and it makes me uneasy for what's to come in future `Night Huntress' books if it's more of the same. I did LOVE Ian in `One Grave', and I am intrigued by a new arc that looks to take Cat back to the government . . .

2.5/5
