Book Description

April 1, 2008
In 1967 the military build-up in Viet Nam is undergoing a dramatic surge. The resulting explosion of anti-war sentiment tears the country apart, slicing through generations and shattering families. In the quiet bedroom community of Shepherdsville, Minnesota, the war comes home to Frank and Maggie McRae, whose only son, Mike, is serving as a grunt in Viet Nam.
Frank despises all Asians because of what he witnessed as a young soldier fighting the Japanese in the south Pacific during WWII. The news that his son has fallen in love with and married Thi Nhuong, a young Vietnamese woman, shocks him. To Frank all Asians are enemies of his country, his family, and himself. A Buddhist, Thi Nhuong represents everything he despises. So he cuts Mike out of his life despite the pleas of his wife, Maggie; daughter, Julie; and Julie s husband, Dan, the pastor of a growing congregation.
Maggie is fighting her own battle--against cancer. Convinced that God is going to heal her, Frank plays the part of a model Christian. Her death on Thanksgiving Day devastates him. Worse, as they arrive home from the gravesite, the family receives news of Mike s death in battle. Embittered, Frank stops attending church and cuts off family and friends.
By the time a very pregnant Thi Nhuong arrives on his doorstep on a stormy Christmas Eve, Frank is so filled with hate that he slams the door in her face, shutting her out in the bitter cold. Finally, overcome by guilt, he tries to go after her, but driving wind and snow force him back inside. With the storm rising to blizzard strength, he confronts the wrenching truth that what hate has driven him to do is as evil as what the Japanese did all those years earlier, and that he needs forgiveness as desperately as they did ...
Frank doesn t know that what God has in mind this night is a miracle. As on that holy night so many years ago, a baby will be born and laid in a manger--a baby who will bring forgiveness, reconciliation, and healing to a family that has suffered heart-wrenching loss.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Julie is trying to keep things together. Her mother Maggie is struggling with cancer. Her brother Mike is headed to Vietnam. Her father Frank is angry at Asians for the tortured death of his brother in WWII and in being instrumental in Mike's leaving. He is angry at the possibility of losing his wife, something he cannot even consider. But when Mike's actions cause a rift in the family, will Frank come to terms with God, his loss, and his faith before he does something that destroys everything?

A story about hurt, peace, and the forgiveness only God can provide. Have the tissues ready for this one. Faith element: high and well integrated.

-- Carolyn R. Scheidies, Author's Choice Reviews

This is no ordinary Christmas story. But then neither was the first one . . . we made it that way. One Holy Night touched my heart and renewed my commitment to forgive as I've been forgiven.

First, author J. M. Hochstetler's One Holy Night takes readers into the heart of Frank McRae as he battles old bitterness, hatred, and prejudice as he walks a unique path to reconciliation and forgiveness. Frank has a lot to be upset about. He witnessed atrocities in the South Pacific during WWII that haunt him, the love of his life is dying, and his son is killed in battle in far away Vietnam . . . a political battleground as well as a war-zone.

When a baby is found in the manger at church--a living baby instead of an imitation--this grieving grandfather is unprepared for a miracle, very much like that first long-ago Christmas. Frank saw the signs but chose to ignore them. He heard the call of God on his heart and fought them with the determination of a WWII vet. When a baby full of innocence and love brings a little bit of his son back to him, Frank's life is changed forever. His journey to the manger is sorrow-filled and yet this man so hardened by hurt is led to faith immersed in forgiveness by a little child.

One Holy Night is a beautiful Christmas parable. Full of the wonder and hope of Jesus.

-- Joy DeKok, author of Rain Dance and Under His Wings

One Holy Night is powerful yet gentle in both its method and message. Set in the 1960s amidst the divisiveness of an unpopular war, a family's very faith and foundations are tested as memories and cultures collide. Hochstetler's "lighting the past . . . and leading you home" signature couldn't be more appropriate than in this sacred tale of hope rising sweetly from the ashes of sorrow. . . . -- Kathi Macias, author of Beyond Me: Modeling a You-First Love in a Me-First World

Author J. M. Hochstetler depicts a family in crisis during the Vietnam years. Tenderly written and poignant, One Holy Night is relevant to our lives today. The ending moved me to tears. -- Kacy Barnett-Gramckow, author of The Heavens Before

From the Publisher

A deeply moving story of forgiveness and reconciliation, One Holy Night is destined to become a classic for all seasons. It deals compassionately with the gritty issues of life--war, devastating illness, intergenerational and interracial conflict, addictions, and broken relationships in a way that will warm readers' hearts with hope and joy long after they finish reading.

More About the Author

I was born and reared in central Indiana, the daughter of Mennonite farmers. The Hochstetler family is well known for the massacre and Indian captivity of several of my ancestors during the French and Indian War. You will find a brief summary of their story on my Web site. Amish Mennonites, they came to this country in 1738 seeking religious freedom. In 1757 their home was attacked by a band of Indians. Three members of the family were killed and three were carried off into captivity, returning after the war ended. Their story is truly inspiring.

A graduate of Indiana University, I am a professional editor and a historian. I was and editor with Abingdon Press for many years and am currently the publisher and editorial director of a small press, Sheaf House Publishers. I am a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, Middle Tennessee Christian Writers, Advanced Writers and Speakers Association, Christian Authors Network, and Historical Novels Society. I live with my husband near Nashville, Tennessee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story - timeless, April 5, 2008
This review is from: One Holy Night (Paperback)
One Holy Night is a story of true forgiveness, but not easy forgiveness. Frank McRae's losses span over 20 years and go so deep that he will probably never change and he doesn't want to change. His family won't give up hope though, and they continue to pray for this devoted husband and family man. What they need is a miracle, a true miracle of the heart. Set in the Vietnam War era, One Holy Night takes you back to the real story, not the protests or the politics, but the story of a family with a son and brother on tour of duty in Nam. J.M. Hochstetler weaves a captivating and often heart-wrenching story that is well worth the read.
