Beautiful book with quick and easy cross-stitch projects., May 26, 1999

This review is from: One-Hour Cross Stitch (Hardcover)

This book has lots of small 2-color and 3-color motifs that can be used individually or in combination. Each motif has approx. 150 stitches -- just the right amount to do in an hour. The designs are shown in a variety of uses. For example, the same motif used on a sweatshirt might also be used on a bookmark.

The excellent Table of Contents and Index makes finding just the right project easy. Projects are divided into these categories:
[1] For Grown-ups
[2] For Kids
[3] For the Kitchen
[4] For the Home
[5] For Gift Giving
[6] For the Holidays
[7] General cross-stitch instructions
[8] Finishing Instructions

The book is beautifully illustrated with photographs of finished pieces as well as clear black and white charts. Charts are written for use with DMC floss.

The only thing slightly deceiving about the book's title is that you must realize that the "one-hour" is for each motif -- not each project. For example, I stitched a bookmark with four motifs, so the entire project took about four hours to complete, not one hour. It's a beautiful book, with simple quick projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy, lovely, March 28, 2011

I got this for my sister, who is into cross-stitch and incorporating small designs into bigger projects. She wanted a book with clear, simple, everyday stuff to add to her work, and this book is PERFECT. The designs are clear, the directions are good, the photographs are remarkably lovely and presented in a very pleasing way. She loves it, and others who'd seen the book developed itchy-fingers to do some cross-stitch themselves!

Another book full of smaller patterns, perfect if you only have a small area in which to stitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Right On and a Bit Better!!!, March 6, 2010

I agree with the reviewer, "cameoroze," this is a nice lttle introductory book for cross stitch and loaded with quick and simple motifs that work up nicely if you want a personal gift or project for someone special. What I really like about it is that it doesn't patronize the beginner with the same old tired beginner's themes. Kudos to the editor for that! It does focus a bit too much on the cutsey, baby and Kiddie themes for my taste but some of these motifs can be used elsewhere for fun, like on Christmas ornments or gift tags or even bookmarks. But there is also a nice selection of unusual choices such as the simple southwestern designs of cactus( more than one variety) and chilles worked in brilliant color and then in pastels and both working out well. There is a selection of 5 different houses to be worked on borders, shelf liners or as part of a sampler. In short, there is lots to choose from here and it is a good addition to any collection particularly that of a new stitcher.
