Editorial Reviews

From the Author

One of my greatest pleasures has been to research the names of God. In these names I saw the people’s responses to the Infinite, the degree of their communication with Him, and the depth of their aspiration. Without exaggeration I found more than five thousand names in many religions, traditions, stories, and fairy tales, and I never found any tradition that did not talk about God or about a similar concept.

I knew from the beginning that to know God directly was not possible for me. There were two ways for me to approach Him: One was to meditate on all His revelations – all living forms, such as trees, stars, rivers, men, oceans, etc. – because I thought that all manifestation is His revelation. The second was to meditate upon names given to Him by all people everywhere.

Once when I was studying Sufism I read about “the hundred names of God.” They impressed me so much that I studied them for a long time until I discovered that these hundred names could synthesize all names given in the Vedas.

Modern man has forgotten the inspiring, uplifting, transforming names of God. Instead he has created the golden calf – sex, money, power, bombs.

It is time that the Gods of all countries be united.

In meditating upon these hundred names of God, we may build in our psyche an inner telescope to look beyond the darkness of our spiritual ignorance and discover the glory shining in Inifnity.

From the Inside Flap

His names are words of power. They are challenges for us. They are an invitation for us to develop the attributes of God, to cultivate the essence of the names in our life.

How profound it is to be occupied with the names of God! We say that God has names, but in reality He has no name. How can we define something or give a name to what is nameless and is so great and so big, so deep and so vast that our names cannot fit Him?

Yet each name of God opens a new window within our consciousness to look at Infinity, hear the call of Infinity, and respond to Infinity through striving toward perfection. Each day of our life we must try to transcend ourselves and feel His Presence every minute of our life.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has brought hope to my heart, July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: One Hundred Names of God (Paperback)
"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who bringeth good tidings." Indeed this is precisely what Torkom Saraydarian brings in all 258 pages of "100 names of God" .

In his study of world religions, Saraydarian found over 5000 names in many traditions, religions, stories and fairy tales. He never found any culture or society that did not talk about God or about some similar concept.

In this book he devotes 1-2 pages of discussion and interpretation to each of 100 names of God. Some examples are The Compassionate One, The Holy One, The Peace, Th Faithful, the Guardian, The Loving One, the Provider, The Light, The Path.

It is hard to imagine that anyone will read this book and not see the God they worship describe therein. If you envision God as omnipotent, you will find Him described in these pages. Do you think of God as omnipresent? Indeed He will he present throughout this work. Maybe God for you is omniscient? Again you will find many names here which expand your understanding.

This book has brought hope to my heart, inspiration to my mind, beauty to my being, and joy to my soul. I recommend this book to anyone who has reverence for the Most High and wants to abide in that Presence.
