PreSchool-Grade 1-- In this well-conceived counting book, Sloat makes readers aware of the groupings of objects all around them. The items to count are shown in individual story scenes crammed with action rather than isolated on the page. Below each picture runs a band showing the numeral--as well as its written name--and the things to seek out. She covers the numbers 1 to 10 and then by 10s to 100. The artist's style is more like that of Steven Kellogg than Anno so look for lots of humor worked into each drawing from 5 otters stealing 5 sets of clothes from campers to 70 bees swarming among 70 hot-air balloons and zeroing in on one with a sunflower design. There are tons of other clever details worked in throughout the book. Sloat gets her ideas across handsomely and appears to have had fun doing it. I am sorry to see that this book is not available in hardback, for it is the best counting book I have ever come across. It goes MUCH beyond the normal counting books in effectiveness.

For starters, each page has a "textured" numeral for the child to trace with his finger, with visual guides to help separate the strokes. (If this sounds technical, it isn't, at least in the way it is presented to the child.)

The other neat thing is that each page presents SEVERAL items to count, and some are placed in slightly unexpected places, adding a simple search game that helps to hold a young child's attention. (For example, on the number-four page, the reader is to find four gulls, four dolphins, and four towels. Now, three towels are hanging neatly on towel rings, but where is the fourth? A little boy in the illustration is wearing it!)

And of course, another nice thing about this book is that it does go all the way to one hundred, counting by tens. My sister reported that this book was the finishing touch in getting her daughter to be able to master the concept that when one counts to twenty-nine, the thirties come next, then the forties, etc. My own daughter hasn't quite made that leap yet, but now that I'm ordering our very own paperback rather than having to make do with the copy at the library, maybe there is still hope!

Though the pages are informative for a child to learn counting, but the book is disappointing as the counting is not exactly from 1 to 100. The counting goes from 1 to 10 and then with increments of 10 rather than 1. So after 10 it is 20, 30, 40.. 100.

This book is a chidrens book that teaches them to count. There are also pictures that has animals things that is for example #5 there will bw 5 animals 5 trees 5 Tadpoles 5 of everything and that is the part where I found out
