Book Description

March 25, 1994
In street and city names, churches and other, more personal associations, the saints are always with us. This text presents saints in all their splendour - in both word and image. The selection reflects contemporary interest and patronage. All the apostles are featured, as are the Church Fathers. Also included are saints whose lives and works provide fascinating glimpses into ther holy lives and the traditions and beliefs that have grown because of them. We see Bernini's sculptural representations of Teresa of Avila in ecstasy; Debastian's martyrdom as pictured by Titian; and El Greco's penetrating rendering of St. Martin and the Beggar.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A paperback edition of the 1993 original, this volume unites text adapted from Butler's mid-18th century Lives of the Saints with reproductions of saints' portraits in stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures and masterworks by Titian, Botticelli, Carvaggio, Rubens and El Greco. Though intended as a "gift to the Christian faithful," Bulfinch's book, with its fascinating and classic hagiography and its judicious choice of sacred art, should have a wider appeal: to students of religion, for instance, or lapsed Catholics, or anyone fascinated by sometimes grim stories of the pious and brave. From the well known (St. Thomas Aquinas, Church Father and patron saint of students) to the more obscure (St. Barbara, patron saint of fire prevention and stonemasons), the lives of Butler's saints are sure to astonish and inspire.

From Library Journal

This is a coffee-table collection of 100 popular saints illustrated with art works taken from international galleries. The saints are listed alphabetically in a valuable table of contents, with a larger list of patron saints following the text. Inclusion is based on popularity within the Christian world and the availability of atypical art works. Entries are generally based on the 1926-38 edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, with the length of each entry varying from one-half page to several pages. Short entries giving written insight into the lives of pious individuals are combined with depictions rendered by artists such as Raphael and El Greco. An inexpensive tribute to art and faith more appropriate for gift-giving than for libraries.

This review is from: One Hundred Saints: Their Lives and Likenesses Drawn from Butler's Lives of the Saints and Great Works of Western Art (Hardcover)
I bought this book from a used book shop and was thoroughly impressed by the beautiful selection of pictures and pieces from Butler's Lives of the Saints. If you are looking for an introduction to the saints, this is well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars a Beautiful Book, October 6, 2008

This book is a wonderful addition to our pleasure-reading stack. While obviously not very thorough in its list of saints, this book contains easy-to-read, well-written bios (usually just 1 page) explaining who each saint is and why they are famous, accompanied by full-page, full-colour images of famous artworks depicting the saint in action. While this would certianly not pass as an academic source book, it is certainly informative (especially for a protestant like me) and a delight to flip through.
