4.0 out of 5 stars Rhyming leggy arthropod talks about feet, helps with math. Sweet!, February 22, 2009

First of all, those in the know will have to get past the fact that despite the meaning of its name, a centipede tends NOT to have 100 feet. Those who can are certain to enjoy this simple story about shoes, feet and multiples of 100. Fortunately, the story is short, fast-paced and has logical rhymes. Unfortunately, the "math" part is really only about three sentences long and includes only: two times fifty, five times twenty and ten times ten. Even so, with arithmetic seeming to sometimes take a back seat to reading and writing, this is an easy, fun way to expose your younger reader to the number 100 and some of its factors. Reading level is K through Second grade. This would be a great book to read during 100th Day of School celebrations. Also good: Mary Clare Loves to Share.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book!, August 29, 2008

One Hundred Shoes (Step-Into-Reading, Step 2) One Hundred Shoes (a.k.a. the centipede book, in our home) is GREAT. I bought it as a "math" reader for my kids, ages 5, 6 and 9. They all enjoy it but my 5yr. old son esp. LOVES it. We began reading it just before K5 began and he memorized it w/in two days. Although it's currently beyond his reading level, it has served as a great incentive; he is learning/beginning to actually read the book he loves so much. It does Not touch on "math" aspects as much as expected however my kids love the rhyming and the fantasy of a centipede wearing shoes and wearing different types for different occasions has offered scope to broaden their imagination! They immediately looked up centipedes on the internet to "see" what a real centipede looks like, etc. We read it often as it maintains its appeal :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of His Favorites, May 17, 2005
This review is from: One Hundred Shoes: A Math Reader (Step-Into-Reading, Step 2) (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 5 year old and he absolutely loves it. It's one of the few he has actually read over and over again. Some of the early reader books tend to bore him, but he (and I!) find this one very entertaining.

This is a great story which teaches young children to count. You can't actually get to 100 by counting the shoes as some of them are hidden, but never-the-less my almost first grader enjoys the challenge!

My 5 year old boy seem to enjoy the book. He does like counting a lot and I think he found the book fun. I would not say it is one he wants to read all the time since I try to get him to read it rather me reading to him but I think it s a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a Toddler, February 3, 2009
This review is from: One Hundred Shoes: A Math Reader (Step-Into-Reading, Step 2) (Paperback)
Our 29 mos. old son LOVES this book. He asks us to read it to him over and over and even wants to take it to bed with him. And the rhythmic rhymes are so catchy he pretty much reads right along with us. I can tell it makes him feel proud to be able to "read" a book. Highly recommended.

ONE HUNDRED SHOES: A Math Reader
by Charles Ghigna
Random House

This week, Courtney took out 8 books from the library. I believe she took out so many because in school they are only allowed to take out 1 book a week whereas at the public library, there are no limits on how many books a child can take out. I'm reviewing the ones we liked the best first and One Hundred Shoes is definitely at the top of the list.

All About One Hundred Shoes

One Hundred Shoes is a Step into Reading math reader. It was written by Charles Ghigna and illustrated by Bob Staake. It has a copyright date of 2002 and was published by Random House Children's Books.

According to the first page of this book, Step into Reading is designed to give every child a successful reading experience with the grade levels assigned to each book to be used as a guide for the parent to determine which book may be most suitable for their child to read.

Step 1 - Ready to read, Preschool through Kindergarten, has big type and easy words. Rhyme and rhythm and picture clues.

Step 2 - Reading with help, Preschool through grade 1, basic vocabulary, short sentences and simple stories.

Step 3 - Reading on your own, Grades 1 to 3, engaging characters, easy to follow plots, popular topics.

Step 4 - Reading paragraphs, Grades 2 to 3, challenging vocabulary, short paragraphs, exciting stories.

Step 5 - Ready for chapters, Grades 2 to 4, chapters, longer paragraphs, full color art.

One Hundred Shoes is a Step 2 book and has an ISBN# of 0-375-82178-3.

The Story

ONE HUNDRED SHOES is a rhyming story about a centipede and his feet, or rather, what he puts on them. Obviously, if he has a hundred feet he's going to need a lot of shoes and the poem is all about where and how he gets his shoes. Does he buy them in a mall or online? Does he wear slippers, clogs, sneakers, boots, sandals, loafers? Where does he put them all when he sleeps? These are all questions asked in the poem and in the end, the poem states he thinks he knows why the centipede walks around barefoot.

Why We Recommend One Hundred Shoes

One Hundred Shoes was an instant hit for both Courtney and myself. I really liked the educational aspect of it, which is simple but perfect for her grade level:

"Shoes come in pairs. Pairs are so nifty.
Two shoes in each pair, so you will need fifty"

Courtney loves shoes so she immediately took to this book. We both had fun looking at all the different shoes that the centipede was wearing. We pointed out which ones were boots and which ones were slippers and so on. We looked at the different designs and colors on them and just had a fun time reading the story. Another reason why One Hundred Shoes is a winner is because the words are written in large print and are simple. This is another book that Courtney can read all on her own therefore, it's been read many times already.

All in all, One Hundred Shoes is a book that I would most definitely recommend to anyone with small children, especially if they are beginning to read on their own.
