5.0 out of 5 stars not just a book, an experience, November 16, 2000
This review is from: One Hungry Monster: A Counting Book in Rhyme (Paperback)
Borrowed this book from the school library and can't get enough of it. Each time we pick it up, there is something new to discover, the 5 purple eggplants, 6 pickled pears... My son is still looking for the jam. the rhyme flows nicely into a song. We'll be buying our own copy and looking for more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful , fun counting book for kids!, June 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: One Hungry Monster: A Counting Book in Rhyme (Paperback)
This book has grown up with both of my sons over the last ten years. I would venture to guess that I read it to my oldest son at least once a night for three or four years, and the same again for my youngest son when he became old enough to enjoy it. As frightning as the name may be there is nothing grotesque or macabre about it. It is simply a fun romp through the house with ten hungry "monsters" that want to eat everything in sight. The monsters are no more threatening than the family dog, but the rhymes and situations are endlessly entertaining to young children. Though I haven't read the book in years I believe I can still recite it verse for verse. One hungry monster underneath my bed, moaning and groaning and begging to be fed...

Our toddler loved this book for months-- and I never tired of reading it. The pictures are terrific, the rhyme fun and it also helps encourage counting and number sense skills. We give it a thumbs-up!

I give a copy of this book to every new parent I know because it brought such joy to our house. The illustrations are gloriously creative and funny. The rhyme is unforgettable. Three cheers for all (count them) ten monsters!

I am ordering this book now. We checked it out from the library last week, and have read it twice a day. It is enjoyed by both my 5 year old and 3 year old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cute and FUN to read!, February 18, 2012

I love reading this story to my kids. It teaches counting in such a fun and unique way. Older kids like it too because it has such a nice flow to it. At the end, the kid throws a really fun tantrum (to FINALLY stand up for himself to the monsters!) and that's always their favorite part. I like reading that part and if you put some feeling into it, the kids think it's hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars a fun book, September 4, 2011

One Hungry Monster was my daughters favorite book growing up. Her original copy fell apart from so much use, and had been gone for years. I ordered her a new copy when she left for her second year of college, since she was moving into her first house, I wanted her to have a piece of her childhood with her.......she cried when i gave it to her.......

Just bought this to have on hand when my granddaughter visits. Had one years ago for my (now)13yr old. She was 2 at the time and we had to read it every night. I had it memorized for years, her older sister still does. In fact, she's the one who has that copy now and is reading it to her daughter. This might be the best kids book ever! Forgot to mention... if you're not buying this particular copy make sure the one you get is the full version. There are shortend ones available (board versions particularly) that are not nearly as entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boys go Bananas!, December 12, 2002

Monsters and 5-year-old boys and addictive poetry that you'll recite for months from memory -- what a great combination. The monsters throw food, hang from chandaliers, paint their mouths with peanut butter, put spaghetti on their heads (and more!) which are all things my child attempts on occasion. Then the boy in the book gets mad and yells at them (like me, the parent) and then the monsters are very sorry (like my kid, after his timeout). And the book counts forward and backward (to-from 10), so it's educational, too. I usually borrow counting books from the library, but this is one you will want to own!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining for adult and child, November 30, 2001
By A Customer
This is one book I never grow tired of reading to my twin 2 year old boys. The rhyme is cute and clever and the illustrations are amusing. We find and count all the objects that are mentioned along in the story. There are a lot of childrens books out there that lose their appeal to an adult but this one just gets more and more enjoyable.
