The sequel that outdid the original,
By Jenna Leigh "Jenn" (Louisiana, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Kiss From You (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a wonderful book. I loved every single line. Eleanor is a quiet, shy spinster that looks almost exactly like Madeline who is the heroine from the first book. Eleanor is Madeline's traveling companion. Their looks are almost all they have in common however. At least at first. Eleanor meets Remington Knight, the man that won Madeline in a card game from her father. From their first meeting she is fascinated by him and he by her. She soon comes into her own as she must emulate her more bold cousin. Her mantra throughout the book is "what would Madeline do?" Until at last she can stand on her own and do exactly like she wants. The drunken scene I found particulary hilarious, with Eleanor telling about one of the duo's more interesting adventures. Remington's reactions are sweet and funny and as it leads to a very steamy love scene, I liked it alot. There is a villian(there always is in the best stories)but this one doesn't show up too often. But,Ms. Dodd does good romance.. and good action as well. I love all her stories, even the ones that aren't from the Governess Bride Series. (hint, hint) She is also a very nice lady, that cares about her fans and it shows as she gives readers exactly what they want.. MORE!!!

This review is from: One Kiss From You (Mass Market Paperback)
"One Kiss From You" is a sequel to "Scandalous Again," and faithfully chronicles the adventures of Miss Eleanor de Lacy as she reluctantly agrees to impersonate her cousin, Madeline, the Duchess of Magnus. In a fit of madness, the Duke of Magnus had wagered his daughter's (Madeline, the future Duchess of Magnus) hand in marriage as a stake while gambling. He lost, and subsequently, Madeline found herself engaged to be married to Remington Knight, a rich American. Magdeline, however, was not someone to sit idly by while others decide her fate. And she persuades her gentle cousin, Eleanor (who also acts as her companion), to pretend to be her and to go to London in order to meet Remington Knight, while she tries to figure a way out of her predicament. While Eleanor is reluctant to take part in so foolhardy an enterprise, loyalty to her cousin who took her in when she so desperately needed a home and a friend, makes her agree to the risky plan. But Eleanor is not at all sure if she can pull off this masquerade: Magdeline is flamboyant, autocratic and incredibly courageous -- everything Eleanor is not. And when she finds that she's perilously attracted to this brash and commanding American, Eleanor knows that she's sunk. For all she think about is what it would be like if Remington were really her's. But Remington seems obsessed with the notion of being married to the future duchess. And what Remington's reaction will be when he discovers that he's been wooing the wrong woman, Eleanor dare not contemplate... On the whole I found "One Kiss From You" to be a slightly more interesting read that "Scandalous Again." The story was a compelling one about revenge and murder, with two rather interesting characters at the center of it all. Remington Knight proved to be the rather typical Dodd romance hero -- likable but annoyingly arrogant and sure of himself (and reading about how him becomes fascinated and enthralled by Eleanor was a lot of fun); while in Eleanor we were provided with a heroine that was not quite the usual fare -- Eleanor initially seemed to quiet, timid yet courageous and honourable. But as the novel progressed, so too did Eleanor's character blossom, and she became more sure of herself and her capabilities -- and watching this happen was incredibly satisfying. The plot, however, did not unfold all that quickly but the somewhat sedate pacing did allow for the attraction that develops between Remington and Eleanor to establish "legs" (in fact some of the interaction between Remington and Eleanor were fairly scotching!). If I had one criticism (aside from my usual complaint about the usuage of twentieth century phrases and terms), it was that for a novel that centered around one man's need for revenge, that part of the plot was never really properly developed. All in all, "One Kiss From You" was a rather enjoyable read.

delightful amusing Regency tale of vengeance going awry,
This review is from: One Kiss From You (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1806 reticent Eleanor de Lacy impersonates her more outgoing cousin the Duchess of Magnus out of love for her relative, but wonders the price once she meets the target of this masquerade. Eleanor was to buy time for Madeline to straighten out this mess caused by her father agreeing to an engagement with a wealthy barbaric colonial.Eleanor and the duchess' fiancé Remington Knight are both shocked by the attraction to one another and more so by how different their image is from the reality. As the Duchess works to free herself from this unwanted engagement, Eleanor and Remington becomes better acquainted until they fall in love. However, she is masquerading as her cousin while he has a hidden agenda of revenge that when either surfaces will destroy the key trust element of their budding relationship. Regency romance readers will take great pleasure with Christina Dodd's latest trading places tale. The story line is fast-paced and action-packed, but the key is the extended cast that makes the "family feud" seem genuine and even more important fresh as the sub-genre has had enough feuds to eradicate the Ton. The loving couples provide the right romantic spin especially when Eleanor and Remington exchange words and he "faints" out of love for her. Ms. Dodd is at her best with this delightful amusing tale of vengeance going awry. Harriet Klausner

I really enjoyed reading this book. It made me laugh out loud many times. To see Eleanor blossom into such a strong and sensuous women was enjoyable. But to see how she beats Remington at his own game, was the best part. He never had a chance!! The supporting characters were pretty funny also. Buy it now!! You won't be able to put it down.

A great follow-up to SCANDALOUS AGAIN!,
By A Customer
This review is from: One Kiss From You (Mass Market Paperback)
In SCANDALOUS AGAIN, the duchess and her companion switch places, and the duchess finds romance. In ONE KISS FROM YOU, we read her companion's story. Eleanor is "born timid", she's afraid of scenes and is easy to bully. So when she goes to London to meet the duchess's fiance, Remington Knight, and she pretends to be the duchess, she knows she's out of her league. But she falls in love with the dark, driven Remington, not realizing he's out for revenge on the duchess and her family. Eleanor grows into a strong character who seizes what she wants and vanquishes the bad guys. Great book! Buy it now!

I love Christina Dodd books, they are wonderful, sexy funny and witty; unfortunately, this was not one of them. The whole book was just sooo...not right! As if it was written by an immature! I won't go into details of the story, but here is why I didn't enjoy it:- Remington is a hateful person; he treated Eleanor like she was a dirt-bag, something he didn't keep a secret from her! Again and again, he told her he wanted to possess her for his enjoyment. He made it clear he wanted a duchess who he will use as a sex slave! And I never really understood what was his plan in marrying the Duchess anyway? He thought he will marry her and make he so satisfied sexually that she will so his every wish? AND? Then what? Love her to DEATH? - Eleanor is such an idiot! He talks to her as if she was a common doxy and THAT attracts her to him! After they're married and he discovers the truth, he tells her how he's going to use her for physical fulfillment (after he tells her he doesn't really want her but the duchess) and all she does is become his sex slave, calls him master and pleasure him to death?! HELLO - One thing that I CAN'T get past is the idea of a regency, well-bred virgin who, not only knows soooo much about sexual delights, but is so eager to use every trick she knows in her first real experience with her partner...and oh she does it so well....be realistic! The woman who is described as being oh so timid, is such a teacher her first time in bed! Supposedly she learned everything from the "Hareem" ladies! I wish authors will be more careful about using accurate information. People keep mistaking Hareem for the word "orgy" or a "sex house"! truth is, its just mixing accurate information with fantasy. If you search for the meaning of Hareem it more or less means "women quarter". A place in a manor where men are not allowed to enter freely. - 3/4 into the book, Remington is still a cold blooded bastard who only has revenge on his mind no matter what. The end of one chapter, he informs her coldly that they are going on a honeymoon. Right at the beginning of the NEXT chapter, they are blissfully married, all is well, and they are even playfully comments with Eleanor cousin (the woman he was sooooo determined to marry) and her husband! What happened? You just get lost! I have many more comments but I said enough as it is. I loved other books for Dodd and I would recommend them...just not this one.

A Fairytale.,

This review is from: One Kiss From You (Mass Market Paperback)
This is typical Christina Dodd -- spicy, entertaining, and light reading. "One Kiss From You" is Dodd's follow up to "Scandalous Again," and this little treasure is better than the original.Quietly, Eleanor de Lacy glides through life. She is a companion to her flamboyant cousin Madeline, the future Duchess of Magnus. In her role as Madeline's modest friend and confidant, Eleanor blends into life's background. She may have survived her stepmother's cruel influence, but Eleanor is a timid demure mouse and desperately avoids the spotlight. Remington Knight is an American golden nugget. To the stately English upperclass, he is handsome, self-assured, and wealthy. But Remington Knight is a mongrel for he lacks a regal bloodline. Instead, Mr. Knight will marry one. He will wed the fascinating Madeline de Lacy, a future duchess. Instead, Eleanor de Lacy arrives in her cousin's place. She will act the impostor, until Madeline can reach London to withdraw from the nuptial challenge. Madeline does not arrive on time. With that - Christina Dodd writes a lustful, fun book -- light reading to the climax. What is light reading? It is simply that - light. It is vacation reading where one does not require the use of a brain. Everyone needs such fun reading in their lives - a requirement to escape from life's hectic pace. Christina Dodd excels in such writing, and as a reader I cherish the change of pace she delivers. How good is this writer? I never hesitate to purchase one of her "fairytales." What a hottie!!! One kiss from this hero and all hell would break lose. Amd this is exacly what happenes in the story. Eleanor is pretending to be her cousin Madeline (a duchess) to appease Remington. Remington is busy plotting revenge against her family, he want to get the plan into motion by marrying the duchess. Eleanor seems like a real sweetheart but the way she changed at the end of the book is really surprising. I mean she starts off as this timid mouse and turns into a lioness in bed. Who would of though ???????????

I dare say I enjoyed this book even more than its predecessor, SCANDALOUS AGAIN. And that's saying something, as I LOVED that book. Eleanor and Remington play off of each other beautifully, and boy, do they make the sparks fly! As far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong with a book by Christina Dodd, and this one ranks right up there with her best.

Not Memorable,

I agree with a couple of other reviewers that felt that Remmington was overbearing and Elenor was very weak. I dislike jelly fish women and overly aggressive chip on my shoulder heros.Yes it is understandable that Remmington would want revenge on the man he thinks killed his family. However, using the mans daughter to get revenge has not only been done to death but is also not the mind set that I personnally look for in a hero. I also had trouble understanding why Elenor feel in love with Remmington. What exactly did he do other than kiss her a couple of times before she fell in love with him. There was no getting to know you momments and he spent way too much timing ploting revenge or telling her what she is or is not going to do. Oeverall the lack of charcter development and and lack of chemistry between Elenor and Remmington made this book seem never ending. Sensuality rating 3 out of 5. |
