Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA Insightful and amusing, Madden writes as he broadcasts, giving colorful pictures of the players he has seen and lists of, in his view, the "best players." Chapters are devoted to positions and what viewers should look for. Football aficionados will enjoy this .

Keeping in mind that the latest edition of "One Knee..." was published in 1987, I found the book to be funny, informative, opinionated and dated. For instance, Madden frequently refers to "up and coming stars" like Elway and Marino. Written in John's usual breezy, earthy Joe Sixpack style, "One Knee..." is still a good, quick read for NFL fans. Especially fans who have fond memories of players like Joe Montana and Walter Payton.

This classic book of football in all its glory, pain, humor, and reflection was written in 1986 by NFL Hall of Fame Coach John Madden. The former Oakland Raiders Coach tells humorous and interesting stories about his former players like Kenny Stabler, Jack Tatum and other Raider greats. He tells behind the scenes stories of legendary games and the Super Bowl he won. He also talks football strategy and some of the plays he designed that were good or really bad. The reason why he doesn't fly but drove an RV to each game after he became an Analyst and commentator on TV.
When he was coach of the Raiders I really disliked him. I thought he was a jerk and whiner of a team of bums and thugs. My opinion changed when I saw him as a valued commentator and after I read this great book. I thought afterwords, "I like this coach!". After reading this excellent book you the reader will like John Madden too! He is missed on TV and I hope he is enjoying his well deserved retirement.

ONE KNEE EQUALS TWO FEET IS ANOTHER FINE BOOK BY JOHN MADDEN. HE GIVES US SOME INSIGHT INTO WHO HE RATES AS THE BEST IN EACH POSITION. HE ALSO OFFERS SOME TIPS AS TO WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN ANALYZING WHAT KIND OF PLAY WILL BE RUN AND HOW EACH POSITION SHOULD RESPOND. JOHN DEFINATELY HAS AN ENDLESS AMOUNT OF ENERGY, KNOWLEDGE, AND HUMOR. HIS ENTHUSIASM FOR FOOTBALL IS BOUNDLESS AND VERY CONTAGIOUS. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR KNOWLEDABLE FOOTBALL FANS. VERY WELL DONE.

This is a great book for all football fans. John Madden proves in this book that he is a football genius. This book is filled with facts from the NFL's history. Madden adds many points that the average fans don't know, yet keeps the book very easy to understand. I recommend this book to anyone who likes football.
