Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

David Baca, a 15-year-old Native American, lives with his family on a reservation in New Mexico. While enduring yet another racial taunt by a bullying schoolmate, he appreciates the bravery of Steven Callister, a Caucasian who defends him. It's the beginning of a close friendship between the two--a connection that is both tested and strengthened by their cultural differences. But after Steven is thrown from a stallion and sustains serious injuries, David faces the challenge of helping his friend overcome a resultant fear of horseback riding. Based on an actual event, Buchanan's ( One Shining Season ) story is a moving coming-of-age piece that incorporates suspense and adventure--the friends stalk a ferocious bull menacing the area--and remains refreshingly unpredictable throughout. Though some terms--mesa, arroyo--may be unfamiliar, an excursion to this land and its people is enlightening and rewarding. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-- Set in modern-day New Mexico, this is an exciting adventure story and a sensitive novel of friendship. Miquel and Steven face death, anguish, and a wild bull named Diablo, who seems unconquerable. Indian tradition dic tates how Diablo must be cared for; due to his size and strength, many have failed and have been seriously injured in the process. Miquel's father is recovering from such an ill-fated at tempt. The boys set out for revenge and to take care of the bull themselves. Steven's horse is lost, and he is seriously injured both physically and emotionally. Through Miguel's grandfa ther's wisdom and a new horse that is also emotionally bruised, Steven begins to heal. This story combines aging, death, cultural dif ferences, male bonding, and true adventure in an easy readable style that is refreshing and not contrived. It's a good choice for young men who think they don't like to read. --Linda S. Keith, Wartsmith Air Force Base Library, Os coda, MI

This is a story about vaqueros. The part I liked about this book is when the devil steer was taken down by David Baca. It was a very interesting description.
