5.0 out of 5 stars One word - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I beg to differ with the amazon.com reviewer. I don't think there's a dud on this album. While some of the lyrics can be corny (luck/buck/stuck etc), the album is a powerful, sweet album full of raw emotion. Highlights include "forbidden fruit", a song about a fictional encounter with a prostitute ("in my mind my mother said "you'd better...

3.0 out of 5 stars Steve, you've done better.
There are several good songs on this album, like Silver Lining and Beautiful Day. Definitely worth a listen, but not quite good enough to listen to straight through. Poltz has a gorgeous voice, which he does not fully display on this album (too many years of vocal abuse?). If you like the Rugburns' albums, you are not guaranteed to enjoy this - very mellow and most...

I beg to differ with the amazon.com reviewer. I don't think there's a dud on this album. While some of the lyrics can be corny (luck/buck/stuck etc), the album is a powerful, sweet album full of raw emotion. Highlights include "forbidden fruit", a song about a fictional encounter with a prostitute ("in my mind my mother said "you'd better not!"/then again she always told me that i wouldn't like the taste of beer"), "everything about you", a love song he wrote for a friend of his who died a few days after he played it to her, and "good morning (waking up with you)", a song which i think easily rivals You were meant for me. The easygoing accoustic guitar, sweet sentiments, great vocal delivery all point to the track that could have been. ie, if this track had been properly promoted, this could have been the equivelant of what "who will save your soul" was for Jewel. Anyway, i look forward to his next album with intense pleasure, as I have listened to this so much, constantly, that it has created a lot of joy for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite CDs in the bunch!, July 15, 1999

Steve Poltz's cute style, voice and sense of humor keeps me hooked. This debut album is great. You can listen to it when you want to be lulled to sleep or while lounging, there are even some pick-me-up songs that are just enough to keep you going. All in all, he's a great performer and I can't wait for the next album.

P.S. He's even better in concert!

Really enjoy the whole album. All the songs have a different feel. You can tell that he really writes from the heart and based on personal experience. It's one of those "kick back and relax" albums

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD of 1998!!!, February 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: One Left Shoe (Audio CD)
This is the best CD I have herd over the past year. I happed on to this disk by seeing Steve Live In Minneapolis last fall. I was there to see Glen Philips of the late Toad the Wet Sprocket when I heard a guy singing about meeting David Cassady. My friend purchased the disk for him self & I because he liked the comic story Steve told on stage hoping it would be included on the CD. No Luck on the story. Any way I got home popped in the Disk, and the magic of Mr Poltz writing took over. Some very fun music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pop Poltz into the player and leave him on all night, September 26, 1999

Steve Poltz has an amazing song writing talent. You'll love every song, because there's something for everyone. My personal favorite is "Silver Lining". You'll catch yourself singing it out loud . . . "eating greasy, greasy hotdogs on a buttered up bun."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous., July 29, 1999

I was able to see Steve Poltz in concert recently. His songs are mellow and comforting and his lyrics are easy to relate to. After I saw him live I bought his CD, and it has brought me so much joy every time I listen to it. My favorite is Look To The East. If you like the music of Jewel, REM, Dave Matthews, or Natalie Merchant, you will probably like this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jewel's bud, singer songwriter Poltz should not be missed, July 3, 1999
This review is from: One Left Shoe (Audio CD)
Steve Poltz separates himself from the more comic style he displays with his San Diego based band The Rugburns. He plays honest, simple tracks, full of emotion. This CD doesn't show the full extent of his skill at the guitar however. He does show his lighter side (which could be described as a hybrid of Jewel and Adam Sandler) on a few songs. Pick up some of The Rugburns if you like these. I have seen Steve live three times and talked to him twice. His character and good hearted nature are refreshing in an age of pedastaled celebrities.

5.0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS, BUY THIS CD, NOW!!, May 6, 1999
This review is from: One Left Shoe (Audio CD)
I bought this album at a recent Jewel concert in London, UK. I was lucky enough to see him there as a support for Jewel. I think his music is great, and I definately think that you all should buy this cd! It's right up there with my Jewel cd's!! I have to say, my fave songs on this album are: Silver Lining, and Everything About You. Before the concert I had never heard of Steve Poltz, but now I listen to his cd all the time!! BUY THIS CD, NOW!!!! DEFINATELY WORTH ALL 5 STARS!!
