Healing and renewal,
By
This review is from: A One-Legged Cricket (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has lost someone and found new life in the search for healing. It is a tale about a one legged cricket and how it helps teach healing and renewal to a woman who has lost her way after the death of her spouse. It is told in a very upbeat metaphoric way that is a wonderful afternnon's read. The author also has an email address where you can share your thoughts with her and she responds. I really found this book a wonderful story with terrific healing thoughts.

A Winner,
By Gail (Martinez, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A One-Legged Cricket (Paperback)
I have read 'Cricket' twice now and it was even more moving and insightful the second time. The heavy, irrepairable weight of the loss of a loved one paralyzes us but to share someone's difficult journey to recovery shows us that it is possible for all of us to go on,in fact, to become stronger. Who is Ulysses? It's not really important - it only matters that he was her guide back to life when it threatened to squash her mind and her spirit. A One-Legged Cricket maps one woman's discovery of her inner strength. In time, each of us will need to find our own Ulysess. This book should be kept within easy reach to be read over and over again.

We all need this book as we travel life's passages,
By
This review is from: A One-Legged Cricket (Paperback)
The "One-legged Cricket" is a book that needs to be in everyone's library. No, it is not a children's book; it is for adults of all ages and that includes teenagers and seniors. It is a story of true romance, a disastrous loss, uncontrollable grief and the best kind of encouragement. Some may call it a fantasy because a one-legged cricket give advice and teaches us how to live. To me, the cricket is not a fantasy, but rather a metaphor for our subconscious mind, or our spiritual side that lets us (and the heroine, Julie) listen to God when we face unbelievable problems, a heavy depression or insuppressible grief. Of course there are many books written to help us face such problems. Unfortunately, most are like medicine, hard to get down and easy to forget. C.J. MacGenn has a combination of intelligence, imagination and artistry to make this book a fast enjoyable read. It really is a page-turner and a conversation-starter. More importantly, you taste only the sweetness of the sugar, none of the medicine. I highly recommend this book to all.Lee Ellis, retired editor, narrator, and journalist.

A Great Gift Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: A One-Legged Cricket (Paperback)
A friend gave me her copy of this book to read and I was so surprised at how much I enjoyed it! It's a short book, so easy to read in one sitting. But more importantly, although the story has a sad beginning, it is a very inspiring story. Anyone who has ever lost a loved one or who has struggled to be the person they want to be will just love this book. I think, for instance, it would be a great little book to give as a graduation gift.

The One Legged Cricket is a genuine, deeply personal story of a woman's journey back from a devastating loss. It is an engaging testament to the versatility of the human spirit and its desire to connect with others.
Julie's life is turned upside down, the pain is too much for her and she retreats from life unable to bear her loss. Then something wonderful happens, she meets Ulysses, 'the one legged cricket'. Their relationship, real or imagined, is her first step in embracing life again. It is a must read. A truly touching and inspiring story that everyone can relate to. There are times in life when one cannot seem to find the light in all the darkness that pain can sometimes bring. This little is book is overflowing with inspiration. I couldn't put it down. Although it starts out with a tragady it leads you where we all must go if we want to triumph over the pain of a great loss. C.J. Macgenn touched my heart with this enchanting story. It is a book that should be in everyone's library.

Little Book with a Big Spirit,
This review is from: A One-Legged Cricket (Kindle Edition)
Although a small book in size, the spirit within "A One-Legged Cricket" is big. I recently read this book for a second time - this time on my Kindle - and loved it even more this time 'round. It's a beautiful reminder that we can endure the things we think we can't, and even grow through our grief. It's one of those books that should be read again and again through the years to help keep our spirits balanced.

A One Legged Cricket reminded me that dreams do come true and although things may not look the way I think they should there are miracles abound if I just look for them. This sweet book opened my heart and put the frisky back into my step. I highly recommend this if you are going through a challenging time or need some inspiration to pursue your dreams.

Books are the only kind of magic that I really believe in. There have been so many times in my life when I found, entirely by accident, the exact book that gave me the information or inspiration that I was most needing at that moment. I know that a one-legged cricket is going to be that magical book for many, many readers. I've just re-read this book the second time, and I cried and laughed again, just as much as I did the first time. It's amazing how deeply this story and it's characters can affect me. It obviously touches a place in my memory and soul that needs to wake up occasionally. So thanks, Ms Macgenn, for writing this story. I've already made a list of the people who are going to be getting it for Christmas! |
