5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
OMG where do I even start? The book caught my attention from page 1 but I wasn't worry because his last book was off the chain. Each page Michael gives his readers more and more drama, it makes you not want to put down the book. The end was a twist and sad, but it was still good. I can't wait until his next one comes out. Mr. Gainer suprised me because I was looking for more of a Dumb As Me story (his previous novel) but instead I got a urban novel that he could of sold to triple crown publications (since thats thier style of writing) but I managed to finish this book in 2 days and this was book was OK you read it once you read them all. But I can't wait for the prequel of Dumb as me...

I'm waiting for your next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Life, Sequel..the urban drama you must read!, March 11, 2004
This review is from: One Life No Sequel: Tomorrows Not Promised (Paperback)
Michael Gainer has done it again! After "Dumb as Me" (his 1st work), here comes "One Life, No Sequel". I waited for this book for one year, and it was truly worth it! I read this book in one day...I could not put it down. If you loved "Dumb as Me", you will TRULY LOVE "One Life, No Sequel".

One Life, No Sequel is the tale of a Miami hustler known as Ready, aka Kevin Gray. Kevin faces the questions every hustler asks themselves while in the game...Am I evil? Am I a sinner? Just when Kevin decides to get his life right and strives to walk him and his family on a straight path with God, Satan comes in with another plan. Kevin faces betrayal from his childhood friend, his girlfriend, and all the haters who try to throw salt in his game. At the end, Kevin loses everything and everyone close to him.

Michael Gainer writes the book in 3rd person which allows the reader to feel Kevin's thoughts and feelings. Although the book is fiction, it showcases real life drama that occurs not only in South Florida, but in every urban/ghetto in USA. You will feel up close, the life and world of Kevin "Ready" Gray.

One Life, No Sequel shows you that tomorrow is never promised.

Michael Gainer is promised to soar as who's who in African American fiction.

I have had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Gainer via email and on the phone and he is very passionate towards his fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Streetlife..It's the only life I know..., May 4, 2004
This review is from: One Life No Sequel: Tomorrows Not Promised (Paperback)
In an interview with Laurette Pierce from "The Literary World" an online resource Michael Gainer is said to have said "I am an author that is not looking to reinvent the wheel, just make it spin a little differently." This and his storytelling finesse is why this avid reader is always satiated.

One Life No Sequel is a realistic view of jagged streetlife unabridged with language that will make you say "Oh no he didn't." Kevin "Ready" Gray is a hustler at the top of his game, however as the saying goes "what goes up must come down" is this applicable to Kevin? Read this page turner for yourself you will be pleasantly pleased.

Thank you so much for both Dumb As Me and One Life No Sequel you are truly a blessing to the literary arena.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a lot better than his first book, May 3, 2005
This review is from: One Life No Sequel: Tomorrows Not Promised (Paperback)
This was good!!! Just when Miami hustler "Ready" decides to get his life in order, betrayal hits him from every angle and at the end he loses everything! I read Dumb As Me, but didn't like it enough to go through the trouble of writing a review. Michael Gainer outdoes himself with One Life No Seguel! He's cute too. (hee hee)

3.0 out of 5 stars You Only Get One Chance, December 1, 2004
This review is from: One Life No Sequel: Tomorrows Not Promised (Paperback)
And main character Kevin Gray is rethinking how and what he is doing in life. As a street hustler; pushing the poison that kills hopes, dreams, and the future, Kevin begins to doubt himself and strikes out with his family in tow, seeking the guidance of the church only to be greeted by hostility with the good reverend John Johnson leading the pack. Seeking retribution and contrary to his desire of redemption, Kevin plots revenge and the drama unfolds.

Like wild animals, these characters are quick to turn on one another, which kept me reading to learn if even one of them possessed a single redeeming quality. Due to format, at times it was difficult to discern who was speaking. True to street lit this read delivers unwavering drama on each page and is told in third person with the narrator being as street savvy as Kevin and the rest of the characters. What I found most refreshing is that Gainer stepped outside of the cookie cutter mold of commercial fiction and was free to do it his way. I also sensed that this author masked his true artistic ability to write in this simplistic style of street lit. I am curious to see his approach in other genres.

If urban drama is what you crave then fasten your seatbelt. This is
a true rollercoaster ride!

3.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous games, June 22, 2004

The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Life No Sequel: Tomorrows Not Promised (Paperback)
ONE LIFE, NO SEQUEL begins with this reflective paragraph, 'In the final days,
there will be many false prophets, because so many people are waiting for
their savior. But Kevin Gray believes the only thing that will save him is
the dope he is slinging.'

Prepared for all the drama that comes with the hustler lifestyle, Kevin is
known on the streets of Miami as Ready, and he takes pride in the way he
handles his business. This taut, chilling tale of life in the inner-city
comes complete with an array of diverse characters who are either hustling
or being hustled. As the story unfolds Gainer has juxtaposed the preacher
in the pulpit with the crack head on the street with baby mama drama. No
one is above reproach and the lines of friendships and relationships are
so broken that loyalty and commitment are lost between the spaces. After
being double crossed by his woman, his best friend, and the preacher, Kevin
knows his time on the streets is speeding towards a tragic end. A fatal
accident leaves a haunting emptiness, and since he cannot rewrite his
script he wonders where can he go and what can he do? He no longer feels
his dope will save him and he is not ready to die.

Michael Gainer has written a graphic depiction of the unprincipled
motivation found on the streets of urban America. The writing is intense
and the characters are within the range of probability, but I think the
author was so intent on sharing the cadence of inner-city life that the
story at times took a back seat. ONE LIFE, NO SEQUEL paints a picture of
imprisoned lives that scream for release; but no one is listening.
