Quirky, odd, strange little movie with aspirations..,
By Lahaina Joe "Joe" (Maui or Santa Cruz) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One Day Like Rain (Amazon Instant Video)
Ignore the cover displayed as it makes the move appear to be be a babe exploitation flick from the 60's and has no connection with the film.
Honestly would never have seen this but I enjoy off-beat films and Amazon was nice enough to place it on the prime movie list. An odd tail of the end of earth/time with a bit of style, humor and wit. I can understand why many will hate this little flick, my wife would have hit me until I flipped it off if she were present when I watched it. But if you enjoy the independent sifi/metaphysical film written with a bit of intelligence, humor and direction you may enjoy this as I did. Best, Joe

One Day Like Pain Watching This,
This review is from: One Day Like Rain (DVD)
The title alone sounds really interesting, it could have gone a million ways...surprised they chose the path they did. ONE DAY LIKE RAIN starts off decent enough, with two girls in bikinis at a pool, the blond one suddenly freaks out and starts throwing stuff around. Okay, I'm intrigued. I also noticed the brunette was wearing sex bracelets, more intrigued. So the blond goes on about a brilliant master-plan and buys five chemistry sets and once again, freaks out and stomps one to smithereens. Now I'm getting annoyed, her character isn't really redeeming and never really ends up becoming so. She starts experimenting in her garage and then starts dancing around like a madwoman at one point and I realized then that this movie was bad and getting worse. I think the director should focus on directing and not writing as much. Its tough to do both, trust me I know, but I really did like a lot of the shots. Thought the cinematography was above average for such a low budget film but the material and the acting were way off. Bad cover of Season of the Witch but I really liked the dinosaurs walking around at the end in the sandstorm. If there is a deeper meaning, someone please tell me. If you do hold out until the end, you see some skin, but briefly, very, very briefly and, as mentioned before, nothing ever comes of those bracelets. This was not mind-bending, this was mind-boring. If these are the kind of movies you like, sans the bitching and moaning of an obnoxious teenager who someone needed to backhand*, then watch DONNIE DARKO instead. (*I don't condone violence)

Compellingly Bizarre and Original.,

This review is from: One Day Like Rain (DVD)
I really enjoyed this film. I would describe it as a cross between Donnie Darko, Virgin Suicides, and Mulholland Drive. I thought about giving up on the film at a few points because it got a little too bizarre for my tastes, and I think that the dialog could have been a bit better (redeemed largely in the latter half of the film), but essentially I have never seen anything quite like it before. The young age of the main characters and protagonist throw an interesting twist on the traditional "metaphysical" film themes, although I suppose Donnie Darko used this same idea. I would have liked to get to know the protagonist a little bit better -- her character seemed a bit off the walls for me, and how she came to instigate this experiment (what motivated her to be self-actualized in this way) did not seem all that believable or credible because the audience never gets to know her character very well until the end of the film. All in all, this film takes you on an interesting experience. I really enjoyed the filming techniques and the soundtrack is amazing. I recommend this film for anyone who can handle "bizarre" films more firmly based around a concept than a plot.
