5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Educational and Edible!, March 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
One Lonely Sea Horse carries a simple message of friendship in an intriguing manner that captures the imagination of even the youngest readers while still entertaining and educating the older child.

The use of various vegetables for the illustrations is a fun technique, very well done in this vividly illustrated story of the lonely little sea horse at the ocean floor.

The older child (and parents, too) will enjoy trying to name the different types of food that make up the illustrations, with some pleasantly simple surprises in some of the sea animals.

One Lonely Little Sea Horse is an entertaining, educational book that children and parents will love to read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Visual Feast, December 7, 2000
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers have been playing with their food again and luckily for us, have come up with a delightful little counting and rhyming story about a lonely little sea horse. As you turn each page, she encounters first two crabs, then three puffer fish, four lobsters, five turtles and on and on until we reach a school of ten angelfish. But what makes this book so unusual, special and unique are the creative, bold and colorful illustrations. Each sea creature, including the undersea backgrounds are constructed of fruits and vegetables. Those two little friendly crabs are really shitake mushrooms. The puffer fish, horned melons, the lobsters, ginger, the turtles, pineapples, the angelfish, red and yellow peppers and the little sea horse herself, chioggia beets. All foods used are pictured and labeled on the last page and you and your children will have additional fun finding all the imaginative ways they've been used. This is a charming picture book all pre-schoolers will love and a visual feast for the eyes. Very highly recommended, you can't go wrong with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joyful! For infants through young readers, June 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
Superb photos and a fun story ("Seven eels said, 'What a shock you're so unhappy. We should talk.'" ). It's one of those rare books that babies and toddlers will love (simple text, bright pictures) as well as young readers (who'll be captivated by the photos of fruits and vegetables turned into sea creatures).

5.0 out of 5 stars A new meaning to the term "playing with your food"!, May 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
This adorable book uses fruits and veggies to illustrate various animals of the deep blue sea. Along with this unique approach to illustration, this book teaches childrens how to count as well. The book is a useful educational tool for children, as well as entertaining anough to hold parents' attention. In fact, I think I like this one better than _How Are You Peeling?_, though that is a fine book, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning, May 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
Bananas as dolphins and octopi? A pineapple turtle? Bell pepper angelfish? These are a few of the clever and innovative characters in this charming book. Sea Horse is more than a simple story- it incorporates number concepts, food identification, and emotional exploration, while providing a visual backdrop that is a treat for the eyes. Definitely one to add to a child's library- and parents will like it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Little Ones, December 6, 2005

This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
My 15-month-old son has loved this book since I began reading it to him at 6 months old. The colors and pictures really keep his attention and as I read, we count the characters so that he can learn his numbers. The rhyming words have certainly helped his vocabulary. Now he can even finish each sentence for me as we read the book together! He loves it. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Only the lonely...", October 22, 2005
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
What a fantastic book. I love the creativity of the artist. My kids love the pictures in these books and I love trying to identify all of the foods. The story is cute and the kids enjoyed counting all of the sealife that appear. The only draw back to this book was that it wasn't as diverse as the others. All in all, a cute book to have around, especially when you need a pick-me-up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love it!, December 12, 2001
By
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
This book is just fun. I am fascinated by the unusual use of food to make all the great sea creatures you see in this book. I am more fascinated by that aspect than my son (age 2) is. He just delights in the story and the pretty pictures. The story is simple and the pictures only serve to illustrate the text. The colors are bright and the reading is fun! I think this book is a joy!

I got this book for my son when he was 2 years old. 3 years later, he still loves this book and read it by himself from time to time. This book is a good counting book, encouraging kids to express their feelings and educational!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun!!, November 6, 2008
By
This review is from: One Lonely Sea Horse (Hardcover)
We got this book at the library and I would definitely consider adding it to our home collection. It is so much fun to look at AND to read. Not to mention it teaches counting too!

I have a 5-year-old with autism and he's barely put it down in the past two days. My 3-year-old and 1-year-old are enjoying it too when their brother will let them see it!
