Editorial Reviews

Conceived with DVD release in mind, this high-end, live video concert taped in Jamaica lives up to its title with a generous repertoire of Bob Marley songs performed by reverent pop, hip-hop, rock, and reggae veterans. Shot on a rainy night in December 1999, the home video version expands upon an inaugural TNT cable telecast with an additional hour of performances. The DVD edition adds a premium level of special features and exclusive content.

The music's the main thing, of course, and on that front One Love is uniformly respectful, orbiting around Marley's songs and infused with whiffs of his Rastafarian world view and reggae's broader Third World perspectives. Marley's family members serve as hosts and frequent collaborators, with a limber house band further reinforcing a coherent, communal element to the performances, and the titular all-stars immerse themselves in Marley's world. Lauryn Hill opens the concert with what is clearly one of its highest points, a joyful "Turn the Lights Down Low." Chrissie Hynde and Erykah Badu take turns duetting with Jimmy Cliff, and another reggae titan, Toots Hibbert, proves a perfect, ebullient fit with a current lineup of the Wailers. The celebrity choices include a conspicuous subset of American folk-rockers in Tracy Chapman, Ben Harper, and Hootie and the Blowfish's Darius Rucker, with Chapman the most convincing in a glowing version of "Three Little Birds."

Avid reggae fans may be mildly frustrated by the overall crossover thrust of this homage, which favors Yankee rap and hip-hop (via Busta Rhymes and Queen Latifah) instead of homegrown dancehall; it tantalizes us with glimpses of Marley's peers, like Cliff and Hibbert, while being largely occupied with sustaining its parade of non-reggae marquee names. For most viewers, though, the scope of the concert and the first-rate sonic finish will sustain the spell, an effect powerfully expanded on the superb DVD version. --Sam Sutherland

4.0 out of 5 stars Celebrate Bob Marley's Music!, January 11, 2001
By
Daniel Kruzel (Campbell, CA USA) - See all my reviews
Bob Marley's music speaks for itself. This DVD captures a concert in Jamaica where various artists gathered and performed, to celebrate his music.

And it is good. The video quality is clear, and the sound (mix) is equally crisp. I enjoyed watching the various artists perform Bob Marley's songs. The Reggae is excellent.

But I've got to say, there is something missing, aside from Bob Marley himself. Perhaps my opinion was/is affected by the appearance of RAP music on this celebration of Bob Marley's music. Believe me, I've tried to figure out what it is that appeals to people in regard to RAP, and I can't make a connection, at least not musically. I was enjoying the DVD until Rap appeared, effectively ruining my mood. Call me old fashioned and limited, but the riot cadence of RAP doesn't blend with Marley's music, which I happen to love.

My advice to consumers is to rent this DVD, and then decide whether or not you want to own it.

You may find that listening to Bob Marley himself, is the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag with some real gems, August 6, 2004
By
I'm generally skeptical about tribute concerts, but this one is quite decent. Superb sound and visual quality, and most of it is true to Bob's spirit. The performances vary. I thought the worst by far were the two songs with Chrissie Hynde. I love her from days past, but her movements looked ridiculously forced on stage and musically she just didn't do justice to Bob's genius. I don't follow Lauryn Hill, but I thought she was fabulous, both solo in "Turn the Lights Down Low" and when she teamed up with Ziggy on "Redemption Song." What a voice and stage presence! Chris Robinson sang an incredibly rousing and soulful version of "Kinky Reggae" with Damian Marley. It's always a pleasure to watch another reggae legend, Jimmy Cliff, on stage. He's more subdued than his "Harder They Come" days, but his performance of "No Woman No Cry" with Erykah Badu was very moving, a great tribute to one of Bob's finest songs. Other numbers are mixed, but overall compelling. We can all be grateful that so many of Bob's children took up the torch to continue his musical legacy. I agree with one reviewer that the very talented Ky-Mani Marley should have been included in one of the feature tracks; he only shows up in bonus tracks.

I initially took this DVD out at my local library, and after watching it a couple of times, decided I had to buy it. A nice addition to my Marley collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Production, May 1, 2001
By
rib (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
May 11, 2001 marks the 20th anniversary of Bob Marley's death yet it seems like only yesterday as these artists keep the memory of Bob Marley alive. The Rap improvizations get a little tiresome and I have to say sometimes "Bob Marley didn't write that part". Ziggy Marley is in top top form and for that reason I rate it 5 stars rather than 3 or 4. I also really liked Tracy Chapman's performances as it looks like she is really enjoying herself and she has a great voice. Ben Harper does a nice version of Get Up, Stand Up and Darius Rucker belts out a spirited version of War. The bonus features make it well worth the price.
