Book Description

November 1, 2000
This large, elegantly produced volume reflects the eclectic tastes and ardent enthusiasms of one man, Alan Siegel, whose illustrious private collection of photographs rivals that of many museums. Truly one of the stunning volumes of photography to appear in recent years, One Man's Eye features 120 masterworks by Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Robert Adams, Ezra Stoller, Robert Frank, Irving Penn, Walker Evans, Erwin Blumenfeld, Edward Weston, and many important contemporary photographers, including Jan Groover, Tina Barney, Zeke Berman, Tom Baril, Lynn Davis, and Michael Spano.

Many of the images shown here have never been published before. The texts include an introduction to the collection by noted photography historian Robert A. Sobieszek, a discussion of how the Siegel collection was formed over the past 25 years, and commentaries on the individual works by the man whose singular eye gives this work its focus.

ROBERT A. SOBIESZEK is curator of photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. For over 30 years, he has lectured and published widely on the art and history of photography, and has organized over 50 exhibitions.

ALAN SIEGEL is chairman and CEO of Siegelgale, a strategic marketing firm. He studied photography with Alexei Brodovitch and Lisette Model before embarking on a successful career in design and advertising. An avid collector of photography since the early 1960s, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the International Center of Photography and The Center for Communications, and is a member of the photography committee at the Museum of Modern Art.

MILES BARTH was the founding curator of the permanent collection at the International Center of Photography. A leading authority on contemporary photography, he has written a number of books and has organized numerous photography exhibitions.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Design consultant Alan Siegel has amassed a collection of photographs that is large and good enough to require a curator, Miles Barth. Together, owner and curator have mounted an exhibition, to which this 14-by-12-inch album is the visual complement. It contains some famous images, such as Nat Fein's Pulitzer Prize-winning Babe Ruth's Farewell, but mostly others that ought to be better known, such as the late (1970) Man Ray "Rayograph" of a feather with "ABC" silk-screened in color over it. The pictures are presented in subject or stylistic categories, such as "Design & Abstraction," "Landscapes," and "Flowers." Siegel introduces the collection and the categorical sections rather too personally; he often sounds overly full of himself. So skim his writing, skip the strange preface by a museum curator (he and Siegel apparently disdained any editing), and settle into some magnificent photos printed at pretty much optimal size. 3.0 out of 5 stars One Man's Ego, August 6, 2001

This review is from: One Man's Eye: Alan Siegel (Hardcover)
Don't get me wrong. This book is full of some wonderful and interesting photographs. It's the self-indulgent discourses at the beginning of each chapter that this book could live without. Just let the photographs speak for themselves.

On a purely superficial note, the binding of this book is ... a flimsy cardboard somewhere between a hardback and a softcover. Not what you'd expect from [the price of the] book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of Mystery, January 27, 2002

This review is from: One Man's Eye: Alan Siegel (Hardcover)
Instead of seeing a photographer's work, it presents the B/W plus a few colour photographs collected by the world known graphic designer, Alan Siegel (to know more about his graphic design, see Sagmeister - Make You Look). He tells the story behind his profession, and how photography evoles from hobby, to professional photography, and to collection. At the end, the importance of the images is linking to him personally and impacting him.

An interesting section is about circus, where the cover picture is remarkably full of mystery. The book is in extra-large size, which allows photos to be printed in fine resolution and size, somehow like a framed picture.
