5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, wonderful album
First and foremost, let this be known. I am not a Small Faces fan. Neither do I like The Who. I think Paul Weller is pretty damn dreadful. I AM an Ocean Colour Scene fan. I love them for who they are, not for who other people would have you believe they pretend to be. This album is fantastic. Profit In Peace is good (some lovely ska guitar) but actually one of the 'not...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ocean DULL-er Scene
The first mistake with the title is the word 'modern'. There is nothing new about this music - Ocean Colour Scene are stuck in the sixties and I wish they would stay there. The music is boring with little or no originality. Sadly OCS come from my hometown, a fact I am very ashamed of. I suppose this is what you get from 4 men who consider Paul Weller a musical...

4.0 out of 5 stars yet another good album that won't get recognition in the us, December 6, 2000
This review is from: One From the Modern (Audio CD)
ocean colour scene, up until this album, have mostly been labeled as trad-rock imitators, much like the black crowes have been in this country. it's a shame, because both bands are more than that, and both are especially gifted at crafting great songs and above average albums. "one from the modern" is, without question a step away from that, but in a good way, as it acknowledges and embraces its past influences, and also creates a new "modern" sound, at least for them. the music is beautiful, from the political anthem "profit in peace", to one of the most touching songs i've ever heard in "so low". a few of these songs lag, especially towards the middle-end of the album, but it closes out wonderfully with the funk-inflected "soul driver" and the epic "the waves". some of the lyrics are simple, but they are so effective within the context of this music. listen to "no one at all" for proof. ocean colour scene is oasis without the drama, boring songs, and beatles-wannabe flavor. in other words, they're a talented, important band. if you're getting a little tired of the radiohead-travis-coldplay sound that's pouring out of britain these days (though it's still good stuff), these guys are certainly worth a listen.

Profit In Peace is good (some lovely ska guitar) but actually one of the 'not so good' song. So Low, although a chart flop is a stunner- great lyrics, harmony, and some great slide guitar. I Am The News is much better live than the Track Three here, but worth listening to. No-one At All, and Step-By-Step saunter by cheerfully enough, while Families, very Sergeant Peppers, is really quite excellent once you've had the album for a while. BUT, for me, this record doesn't even kick off till track seven. July, although MUCH better live, is a masterpiece. Jane She Got Excavated is utterly original. Emily Chambers... what can I say? Better live, but a piano line to die for. Soul Driver- not my favourite, but keeps you waiting for... The Waves- in twenty years time, this will be seen as the greatest Ocean Colour Scene song of them all. The Royal Albert Hall Organ at its most stunning; I've always thought that if Ocean Colour Scene had a truly BEAUTIFUL song, they'd be complete. This is that song. Really, really stunning, with I Won't Get Grazed as its lonely reply. Buy this album. Listen beyond the first track, and you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get some Ocean Colour Scene into your life!, February 3, 2000
This review is from: One From the Modern (Audio CD)
Ocean Colour Scene are very successful back in England. Their Paul Weller type sound has made them household names. With the release of 'One From the Modern' OCS show their true class and ability to write great tracks. From the political 'Profit in Peace' to the emotional lyrics of 'July'. This album is a must for anyone who liked 'Moseley Shoals' as this album is just as good. I highly recommend that you invest some dollars in this album because you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Fans, Look No Further, July 12, 2002

Like its predecessor, the masterpiece "Marchin' Already," this disc has not been released in the US, and it's a crying shame. OCS channels Traffic, the Beatles, the Stones, Badfinger, and more, without sounding any less contemporary for it. This is simply classic rock at its best.

Don't be scared off by the high import price - it's actually worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars As great as "Moseley Shoals", if not better., February 6, 2001

I can't decide weather "Moseley Shoals" or "One From The Modern" is the Ocean Colour Scene's best album. It's hard to beat songs like "The Day We Caught The Train" but songs like "So Low" and "Jane She Got Excavated" sure can make one believe that.

The album opens with the single "Profits Of Peace" which is a great peace epic song. "So Low" was my first favorite song on the album. The song is tender and has great lyrics. "No One At All" features backing vocals by Paul Weller. "July" is a great single that I'll be sure to listen to this summer. "Jane She Got Excavated" is my favorite song on the album and should rank as one of Ocean Colour Scene's best songs ever.

You can't go wrong with "One From The Modern" and it's very much worth the import prize.

This ie Ocean Colur Scenes 4th studio album and i personally think that its their best. The album shows what ocs are really made of. The album contains the hit singles Profit and Peace, So Low and July (theme from lock stock and two smoking barrels)and several other great tracks. Its a shame that this album never had an offical release in America as i feel that they are missing out on so much.(its available on import though)

5.0 out of 5 stars Damn fine CD., December 21, 2000
This review is from: One From the Modern (Audio CD)
Different from Marchin' Already and Mosely Shoals but just as good, if not better. There's no equivalent to The Riverboat Song or Hundred Mile High City on this CD and most of the songs are more mellow than the previous album, but this is no bad thing. This is one of those rare albums that I listen to from start to finish without skipping any tracks. July flopped as a single in the UK but for me it was the defining song of the summer of 2000. All of the other tracks are first class with The Waves possibly just standing out above the rest.

This album is one of the best CDs I have ever heard. Every track is simply outstanding. They have matured with every effort and this is not retro-rock, but unlike everything else out there. Well that's what I think anyway.
