Ludwig, a German soldier of the first World War, has been apart from his children, his business, and his beloved wife for years - except for rare visits. Then a flirtatious and beautiful woman named Nelda nocks his hat off with a snowbal, and his future is changed forever. And not in a good way. After the war is over, Ludwig confesses to his wife (in a letter) that he has been unfaithful to her, that he is divorcing her, that he is giving her the family business, and that he is moving far away . . . WITH THEIR SONS! The brokenhearted mother wants the best for her boys, and, believing that they need their father in their lives, she gets them ready to go. Earnie and his simpleton brother, are in for it. Follow Earnie through his childhood with only a pair of selfish adults to care for him, and then through his embittered years as a young man . . . alone. And finally as a man searching for answers, and finding them in the answer to a prayer. A prayer for one moment. Only one.

I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of Christmas Carol Kauffman's books, and have been inspired by them all. She had a very special way of writing that really touches the heartstrings. I would recommend her books to anyone. It's a shame that most of them are out of print, and an even bigger shame that she isn't around to write more of them!
