I have enjoyed this series, but this book doesn't compare with the others. Like another reader mentioned, I too struggled with this book. It was so boring in the beginning and action (mediocre at that) didn't begin until the middle of the book. The continued trash talk about her dad throughout the series has been annoying, but it seems like the focus of this book. Her dad wasn't around while she was growing up because he was in the military - and she blames him for childhood issues. Yet, she pretty much followed in his footsteps career-wise. And now she is not available or around for her sister and family. I think this is a case of "the pot calling the kettle black." Thankfully she and her dad work it out in the end and all I can say is it is about time - only took 5 books to do so. Another aggravation is the relationship between Jaz and Vayl...again - five books later and Jaz is still wishy-washy over the relationship. Jaz is supposed to be this take-charge, assertive, independent, take-no-BS woman who "smokes the bad guys," yet she can't admit her feelings for Vayl because of her "fears" of what others will think of him being a vampire? Whatever....

3.0 out of 5 stars The 5th book in the Jaz Parks series, December 2, 2009

This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)
The 5th book in the Jaz Parks series was just okay for me. While I really like all of the characters, I'm not such a fan of the plot. I love all of the characters in this series. I like that Jaz is a kick-butt girl, but still has this soft side of her that love Vayl. And I like her humor. And I find Vayl intriguing and Cole is just plain cute (and his feelings for Jaz are so sweet!) I really liked the new character that was in this story, Viv, although throughout the whole book I couldn't decide if she was a good guy (or rather girl) or bad guy.

But the plot just doesn't do it for me. I find myself often confused and trying to think back to figure out what is going on. And a lot of it I just plain don't get. But maybe that's me. But I will still continue to read this series and look forward to the next book, Bite Marks.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tired story and flat characters, March 3, 2009
This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)
I enjoyed the beginning of this series. Jaz was a refreshing character and the premise was entertaining.

I had some problems with the 4th book in the series with the believability of the characters' actions and responses, but I liked it enough to purchase this book. What a disappointment.

From the get-go, this book feels shallow, flippant and juvenile. The characters are more concerned with one-liner jokes, trying to hide their inner monologue and unrealistic reactions to a silly 'ghost convention' that the book is centered around.

I am not sure if the author was rushed or is just being more 'free' in her writing, but the book seems like it is told by a 13 year old...definitely not up to par with the previous novels in the series.

Considering how crowded this genre is becoming, there are plenty of other books out there worth reading...do yourself a favor and give this one a 'PASS'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Yawn, February 28, 2009
This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)
I love Jennifer Rardin. But, I struggled with this book. I think that the constant need to throw in catchy phrases and one liners took away from the characters. The characters in this one just didn't have the development of the previous books in the series. I just didn't feel that nail biting suspense that I did with her previous books. In this series Jaz's dad accompanies her on a mission. I was a little put off by some of Jaz's remarks about killing her dad. It just didn't translate into the humorous scenes as I think it was meant to be. I think it took away from the plot. I will continue to read this series and hopefully keep it in my collection of favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent urban fantasy, January 4, 2009
This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)
She works for an organization that deals with crimes involving supernatural entities; her boss Vayl is someone she cars about, but though he wants to make her his, Jaz Parks is not ready for a commitment. After killing the vampire Edward "The Raptor" Samos, Jaz, Vayl and Cole travel to Scotland where the dead undead has left a power vacuum in which Samos's former allies, (the Flock vamp gang, the Valencian Weres and the Coven of Inverness) battle for supremacy. Jaz's superiors believe a balance of power between the three groups is best for everyone else.

However, the Valencian Weres have taken out a contract on the Coven's leader Floraidh Halsey; it becomes the job of Jaz's team to prevent the killing from happening. This proves exceedingly difficult as Jaz and her teammates have no idea what the target looks like nor how powerful she really is. The Coven worship Scidair whose followers live long lives because of the sacrifices of the dead they make to it. Floraidh is creating a spell that means danger for Jaz, but with the help of Vayl and the ghost who lives on her land, she has a slight chance of surviving their mission; succeeding at the goal of the mission is less likely.

Following up on the Raptor affair, Jennifer Rardin takes her Manhattan based operative to Scotland, which refreshes this amazing and provocative urban fantasy with new dangers for the heroine and her horde. The story line is loaded with action as the CIA agents work diligently to prevent a disaster; which is why the plot is actually character driven as the audience observes the strengths, weaknesses and desperate desires of much of the key cast. Besides the obvious Jaz and Vayl, the rival leaders are fully developed so that for instance the Coven witch is 200 proof evil, but there are even more malevolent creatures out there than she is. Jaz is at her best as she is tough, courageous yet vulnerable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Jaz, March 17, 2011
This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)

Now that Samos is dead, those left standing are scrambling to gain power. Jaz and Vayl's bosses feel that the balance should be kept, so their latest assignment is to stop the assassination of one of the rising powers. Posing as a bunch of ghost hunters they set off to stop a very gifted female assassin with some nasty powers of her own. To make matters more complicated, Jaz's dad has somehow wormed his way into the mission and for the first time ever, Vayl was denied a request by the CIA. The force they are up against needs a warlock's magic to contain it but the new oversight committee gave them Cole instead. Something fishy is going on, so Jaz and Vayl will have to keep a wary eye out if they are to have any hope at surviving this one intact.

In my review of the last book I said I would do a happy dance when Vayl and Jaz finally get together. I am very happy to say that they are definitely on the right track as they pretty much are an official couple now. Of course there still are some issues between them and I'm sure the road will never be completely smooth. That being said, they have taken things very slow, so they should be stable enough to last. There were several points in the book where Jaz is overcome with emotion. As we all know, emotion is not something she is very comfortable with, so it really was monumental for her to be able to show these feelings for Vayl.

The mission for this book was a little confusing at times as it wasn't really the main focus. Much more time was spent on Jaz's personal growth, her relationship with Vayl, and her issues with her father. Another main issue was this new oversight committee that seems to be meddling in their affairs. I got the sense that they were supposed to be a big potential threat, but I just wasn't feeling the danger. I'm wondering if they will be more of a problem in the future as it seemed like things were being set up for more later. Even if things escalate with them, I'm not sure how much of a threat they can possibly be. Jaz is always paranoid at losing her job because it's practically her entire life. However, I don't think it would hurt her too much in the long run as she could always go "private," like a mercenary, but only for good causes. I guess will we just have to wait and see where things are heading.

Sometimes it can surprise me how much I'm enjoying a series, especially when the fifth book is as good as the first. This series isn't slowing down at all, if anything it is picking up steam. The characters are great and I can't help but to feel everything right along with them. Each new book is harder to put down than the last, and this one is no exception. Be prepared for one heck of ride with plenty of character development along the way. I cannot wait to dive into the next book to see what more trouble is in store for Jaz and the gang. Definitely a top rated Urban Fantasy series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jaz and Vayl...the new ghostbusters?, March 18, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)
This is the fifth book in the Jaz Parks series by Jennifer Rardin. I thought it was a good addition to the series and I really enjoyed reading it.

In this book Jaz and Vayl are sent to a Ghost Convention to stop the assassination of one of the heads of a coven in the area. Jaz's dad ends up tagging along on the mission and Cole is also part of the party. Jaz gets dragged into some interesting situations with the local demons, ghosts, and witch coven. You learn a lot more about Jaz's history.

This was a great book. It is well-written and fast paced. It was nice to have Jaz and Vayl finally make some progress in their relationship. I do love that these books manage to have some sexy scenes but no explicit sex; it's nice to have the element there and it's even nicer that it doesn't take up all of the plot. Bergman and Cassandra were noticeable for theirabsence ; although there were plenty of interesting characters at the Ghost Convention to keep the reader occupied. There weren't as many nifty gadgets as usual but the story didn't suffer from that either. I still think Vayl is my favorite character; he has the coolest vampire powers ever. Jaz is continuing to develop interesting strengths of her own with her use of fire.

I continue to really enjoy this series. It is in the top five for paranormal series that I really love. I love that these books continue more focused on action and adventure, than on romance. There os a bit of something for everyone in this series; action, adventure, guns, gadgets, ghosts, demons, vampires.

I look forward to the next book "Bite Marks" which is scheduled for an October 2009 release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaz Parks is my hero!, June 22, 2009
This review is from: One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5) (Paperback)
This fifth installment of the Jaz Parks series was definitely my favorite. Jaz is in top sarcasm form as she and the uber-sexy Vayl try to uncover an assassination plot against the leader of an evil coven with no magical back-up. As if that wasn't bad enough, she also has to contend with a phantom threatening to kill her father, creepy-crawly snakes, and crazed ghost hunters. On top of all that, her relationship with Vayl comes under the scrutiny of the guys upstairs. Whats a CIA assassin to do?

Very enjoyable, and a great continuation of a great series. Cannot wait for the next book!
