By Lee Walton (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One More Mile (Audio CD)
I recently purchased Jack Clayton's new CD and it was great, I can't stop playing it. The only thing better than cruising around town listening to it was seeing him perform live. he's one of the few performers I've seen that may actually be better live than on his recordings...

Not Just For Truck Drivers!,
By Timothy Goodrich (Nashville, TN Music City USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One More Mile (Audio CD)
The sound of the open road has been synonymous with Country music almost since its beginning. In past decades, numerous hit Country songs have told the stories of the men (and, occasionally, women) who pilot the nation's freight down the interstates and backroads. Some have celebrated the freedom of being--in the case of many owner/operators--one's own boss, as in Del Reeves' hit, "Lookin' At The World Through a Windshield." Others have taken a more gritty, realistic look at the profession of driving eighteen-wheelers, as in Ronnie Milsap's "Prisoner Of The Highway." The songs on Jack Clayton's new CD, "One More Mile," touch on all these varying aspects of the life of the professional big-rig driver, and more. Clayton's strong, traditional baritone voice--backed up by some first-rate Nashville musicians--makes for a listening experience that you don't have to make a living behind the wheel to appreciate! This is in every way a modern-sounding traditional Country album. Half of the ten songs on this CD were co-written by Clayton and collaborator Don Stafford, with Stafford and other co-writers rounding out the rest of the material...with one exception; the old Beatles song "All My Lovin'" is given a surprisingly effective Western Swing treatment, complete with twin fiddles! "Montana Morning" is a gentle ballad that tells the tale of the driver whose road is coming to an end, and his plans to retire to a life with the woman who's been waiting so long for this day to come. Cowboys and truckers have always sort of ridden side-by-side in Country music lore, and that idea is explored in the up-tempo "Modern-Day Cowboy" ("...I'm a modern-day cowboy, I ride eighteen wheels"). Merle Haggard has recorded several songs "geared" to truckers over the years, and the Hag is saluted in the Stafford-penned "When The Okie From Muskogee Came To Town." This song allows Clayton's voice to make full use of his obvious Haggard influence, and it works without slipping into full-blown impersonation. My personal favorite on the album is "I Can Take It From Here," in which Clayton sings the familiar theme of using the open road to put some distance between the singer and a failed relationship ("...One more mile, one less tear; I gotta find a change of atmosphere..."). The chorus and hook are so catchy, this song should be on any Country station's playlist. The writing, production and terrific vocal performances on "One More Mile" add up to a great first effort by this emerging, engaging Country vocalist...and you don't even have to know how to double-clutch to enjoy it!
