Editorial Reviews

Review

"Teenage boys who are still at a very early stage as readers will be attracted to his brash, angry voice, his fierce protection of his mother and his ultimate success...Struggling male readers will welcome is length and its focus on emotions and relationships. Recommended." (CM Magazine )

"Fitch continues to display her love of sounds and words that she has so aptly demonstrated in her poetry...The use of italics, capitalization, slang, and reference to popular culture lend to the oral nature of this slight novel." (Resource Links )

1.0 out of 5 stars One More Step Is a Boring Read, September 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: One More Step (Orca Soundings) (Paperback)
One More Step is about a boy named Julian. His family is going through a lot of problems, and he is stuck in the middle of it. He doesnt know his real dad either. The person that he considers his dad and himself always get into fights. He rarely gets along with anybody in his family except his mom, and Julian is always getting in trouble. I didnt really care for this book, because the plot is difficult to understand, and everything seems to be cluttered all together. I cant really recommend this book to you because I dont really like it. There might be better book out there.

2.0 out of 5 stars One More Step Needs More Depth, August 20, 2005
By
Mark Kirby (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One More Step (Orca Soundings) (Paperback)
Fourteen-years-old Julian Hall is the narrator of this novella, about a boy trying to come to terms with his divorced parents and his mother's growing relationship with Jean-Paul, a charming man from Quebec. The novella lurches about in an episodic manner without developing any of the scenes with satisfaction. Consequently, the struggles Julian faces -- his blowup with his alcoholic father, the death of his grandfather, his mother's marraige to Jean-Paul -- lack emotional pull. Fitch successfully captures the viewpoint of a 14-year-old boy and creates a likable enough narrator, but this novella feels more like a cliff notes than a fully realized story.
