in 1999, thomas bangalter, one half of daft punk, under the guise of stardust, released the single "music sounds better with you," which ended up being one of the year's biggest dance hits. bangalter was reportedly offered 3 million dollars to produce a stardust album, but declined. now, bangalter along with guy fabulous*, dormant since the release of 1997's homework, have released "one more time" featuring new jersey garage singer/producer romanthony. what one would call the "daft punk" sound -- chunky, mechanic, heavy bottom -- was sampled liberally by mirwais on madonna's chart-topping "music," so, for this single at least, the guys steer clear of it: in many ways, "one more time" is what one would imagine the never-recorded stardust album would sound like.like "music sounds better...," "one more time" has a very old-school disco feel with its four-on-the-floor beat and horn samples, but whereas the stardust hit struck me as very rigid and repetitive -- more experiment than song -- "one more time" is looser and more fun. paradoxically, it's also the better crafted song: the build-up at the end is great, even though it takes its sweet time. i don't quite yet know what the upcoming daft punk album will sound like: if it'll be closer to stardust or if it'll be more akin to homework. regardless, in these heady times, daft punk -- a less crass fatboy slim and a more soulful moby -- are putting the fun in funk. what more could you ask for in your dance music? *fabulous isn't his real last name. it's quite long and has a hyphen in it, but "fabulous" works just as well, i think.

Retro Meets Synth,

This review is from: One More Time (Audio CD)
Catchy, catchy, catchy. Daft Punk has done it again, producing a lot out of very little, reminiscent of their uber-hit "Around the World" off of the album HOMEWORK. This time around, it's the phrase "one more time...music got me feeling so free...we're going to celebrate...celebrate and dance so free..." Mixed with an ear-catching retro beat of the disco era, not to mention the distorted twang and synthesizer induced vocals reminiscent of early new wave groups of the 80s, "One More Time" proves to appeal on many levels. It's a smart song. It's architecturaly rich, yet minimal. Nostalgic, yet new and modern. Daft Punk are innovators. What's next?

Daft Punk Rox my sox!,

The song "One More Time" was introduced to me (strangely) when I was watching an MTV2 commercial for their upcoming videos. I saw this anime music video for about 5 seconds, and I instantly called up my local radio station to find out the name of the song and the band's name too. And three weeks later (after extensive research of where the Discovery album was being sold) I finally bought the CD. I now have all of the Daft Punk albums, including all of the imported singles and the newest album. THis band is one of the best Techno-pop bands EVER!

Promising...but never made it :(,

About the first 20 seconds of One More Time are actually worth listening to. The brass sample started a catchy track, but stops, and just has a vocoded voice (Romanthony)for around 3 min! This is nothing like the Daft Punk from Homework, and its not even house, mearly some vocoded voice over a drum loop. Save yourself the money and buy Homework, or the Stardust single.

The best track on the new cd,

Don't expect homework 2 (however much you want it)........1. one more time- best track, unlike the rest of the album 2.areodynamic- sound like les rythmes digitales, with guitar solo 3.digital love- more vocoder, full on pop song, sounds like air with a 909. 4. harder, better, faster, stronger- Kinda funky short track, one of the better ones. Sounds like a disco kraftwerk 'numbers'. Vocoder vocals, filter. 5. crescendolls- filter disco meets les rythmes digitales. With that 80's sounding 808 kick (in a bad way). 6. nightvision- under two minutes. Atmosphere 'air' track. 7. superheroes- Finally a firm 4/4 kick around 136 bpm! Has a sample that sounds like barry manalow repeating 'come through the air. Some bad synth sounds, but all in all one of the better tracks. no vocoder! 8. high life- 124 bpm, cut up filter disco, but only 3:19 long. Good, not great. 9. Something about us/96 bpm- the vocoder returns! Laid back, pillow talk groove pop song. compare to air. 10. voyager- around 120 bpm. another under 4 minute filter disco song with big synth sweeps. Pretty, but lacking bite. 11. veridis quo- a 5:44, 108 bpm workout in big synth sweeps and a back beat, once again pretty but no bite. 12. short circuit- les rythmes digitales meets chaka khan in 1981, total filler track. 13. face to face- around 120 bpm. good cut up filter disco, a couple of vocal snippets and then a nice vocal from todd edwards, a strong track for this album. 14. too long- coming in at 10:00 minutes long and 132 bpm. It's a long builder, growing into a good solid track, with another romanthony vocal (no vocoder). all in all not awful, but not homework. They seem to be going off in to the air/stardust area and it does grow on you after few listens. Just keep your anticipation in check because the things that made homework so great are nowhere to be heard on this album.

Dissapointed !,

Dissapointment of the year for me, no doubt. I was expecting big things of this but it is way too cheesy and offers nothing new (like their earlier works did). Stardust was much better than this. I also don't understand why they felt the need to ruin Romanthony's voice as he's a great singer. You should rather check out the new Demon single if you can 'You are my high'. Now that is a quality tune, wish the new Daft punk sounded like that.

Daft Punk sold out?,

A lot has been written about this single, mostly from the European press. I read about it in MixMag, looked it up on Napster and there it was. At first it sounds more like Stardust and Benjamin Diamond than Daft Punk. Some people say it's too commercial, too Top40 and I agree completely. Whether or not it's a irregularity on the next album or a sign of things to come, you can't resist listening to it over and over. Eventually you like it because you know every part, not necessarily because it's avant-garde or original. It's on my Rio right now but it could be "In your arms" (Benjamin Diamond) or "Lady" (Modjo). Well I have them all right now...

Umm..is there another artist named Daft Punk?,

The drums, vocals, and synths sound nothing like Daft Punk. If you enjoyed the classic album "Homework", then do not buy this. The first thing that came to mind was "Eiffel 65". It's super cheesy Hit Radio crap. Its ok. The boys had a miscue. It happens to everyone. I just hope this doesn't happen again, because I though Homework was the best House album ever. Oh well, last advice: Don't buy this pop.

Better than the bad critics say it is,
By Evan C. Paul (Taunton, MA) - See all my reviews

I have never been a big fan of pop music, or house, or dance, or techno, or anything like that. In fact, most of it I despise because it's repetitive and shows little more ingenuity than being able to push buttons and click a mouse. However, I've heard a few Daft Punk songs, both old and new, and I've liked them, and that says a lot. Sure, this is a catchy tune, and people like it, but it's unfair to dismiss a song as lacking in substance and musicianship merely based on that (although it's often very true). This may not be a shining example of fine composition (I am pursuing an MM in Music Composition, and I like to think I know what I'm talking about here) but it's a great dance song and it represents a thorough understanding of the times, and the value of retro music. (80s music is retro already?) This combines the musical idioms of the 70s and 80s with the dance beats of the 90s and the interstellar groove of the new millenium. Plus, vocoding (as it's called, I presume) is a great new concept that needs to be worked with a bit more, because it delves into the concepts of early electronic music and musique concrète (like the virtually Cro-Magnon idea of tape track editing) which really need to be revived. And who can resist dancing to this upbeat number? All in all, to Daft Punk I say, bravo, and keep up the good work.

This track was a disappoitment for me. It's catchy but little else, thomas bangalter obviously wanted a big pop hit and sunk low to get it. Sound's like a cross between Eifel 65 and Cher's "beleive"....
