TALK ABOUT A COLLECTOR'S ITEM...,
By
This review is from: One More Try: An Anthology (Audio CD)
I still remember first seeing the ad for this set in early 1997, and KNOWING I'd be buying the day it was released, and I did, and not a day passes I don't thank God I have a copy before it went out of print. Truly a collector's item in every sense of the term. Example ? Well, how 'bout JOHNNY WINTER on axe, BERRY OAKLEY on bass, BUDDY MILES on drums, and Gregory Lenoir on organ and vocals doin' " Wasted Words," plus 33 more tracks !!! If you love Gregg...just buy it !!!

The BEST Gregg Allman release.,
By
This review is from: One More Try: An Anthology (Audio CD)
Yes, there were legal problems with this release, and this isn't an actual Gregg Allman album, but
it is still the best Gregg Allman collection available. This is not for anyone though who only wants refined studio music. This is a collection of solo Gregg demos, Gregg with a band demos, alternate takes, live cuts, and also a few studio cuts. This collection is RAW to the bone. This is undiluted Gregg Allman. At points it can be a little ugly, but one must remember that creating a refined studio cut for an album has to begin somewhere. If you ever wondered who Gregg really is, or wanted some layers stripped away, this is the collection to buy. This is essentially all about Gregg Allman. It can be a bit overwhelming in places but this is only because one is listening to RAW footage that was probably seen as too hardcore for some who only want refined studio music. Real fans of the ABB and Gregg Allman will immediately recognize there idol in his purist form as he bears his soul.

Demos, Alternate takes and hits,

These 2 CDs represent the best of Gregg Allman in the 1970's. If you like the "Laid Back" album, much of this is in that style. It's great that all the rarities are on these discs and it is well worth your time. There are stripped down versions of Both solo and Allman Brothers songs here so this is very worthwhile and highly recomended.

...& the version of "Melissa" w/ Duane,
This review is from: One More Try: An Anthology (Audio CD)
Just wanted to note that this collection includes the original (Sept'68) demo of "Melissa" - the one with Duane on it(!) - not the one off "Eat a Peach" with Dickey. I'm surprised no one has mentioned that - i'd say it's the "crown jewels" of this collection, although both discs are packed with great demos of Gregg's solo album songs that are far less over-produced than the album versions. Highly recommended for any avid ABB/Gregg fan.

This CD set was released in 1997 then withdrawn quickly due to legal problems with Greg Allman and others.
It's a shame because it's a lovingly produced set that contains many demo's and classic songs Greg recorded during his solo career. A must get if you can find one.

I bought this a few years ago, it is still one of my favorites. This is a good view of what Gregg is like solo. Most of the songs are recorded well, the song selection is great and I love the vocals. His guitar & piano playing sound, so personal, that is what makes this cd so different. This is as raw as it gets, I hope there is more like this in the future. This shows how talented he really is. Keep in mind this is out of print and the price just keep's going up, so if you want this one you better hurry.

I love the mellow, rhythmic miracles from Gregg Allman's unreleased, secret solos. In this CD, you can hear him become. You can hear his pain, his struggles, his love, his passion, his angst. Full of internal struggles, this heartfelt, kind & blessed musician, puts a current spin on EVERY TRACK he records. I don't feel I am listening to something written years ago--or recorded years ago. Maybe that is part of what I gained from living & being born in America. Maybe it is a BIG PART what a true musician can do for us. Make us FEEL. I feel $200 would not have been too much for a CD I never get tired of because it has MUCH variety, talent, depth. This is music from the King of Southern Rock I can feel deep down in my Grinchiest heart anytime of the day or night. I LOVE it!

There's no such thing as too much Gregg Allman. This 2 CD Set will not disappoint the Allman fan!! In fact, it is a must have!! The discs highlight Gregg's ability to take an audio sensation and turn it into a physical reaction. You feel the pain in the sound. I am an avid blues fan, and few, if any, elicit the response I feel when I listen to Gregg Allman. His vocal style is a window into his soul, and he's giving the listener a glimpse in. This set is a treasure with it's previously unreleased tracks and remastered tracks!

Want a fuller understanding of Gregg Allman's Low Country Blues? Get this anywhere you can. Most of this fine collection dates from the years between the Allman Brother's swift rise to prominence that ended with brother Duane's untimely death and the band's resurrection in the '90s -- the mostly sad years when Gregg was a hit or miss (or simply missing) live performer & recording artist. He is the writer on many of the tunes here but whether he's covering his own material or someone else's, he's an artist largely borrowing "sound" from other sources -- soul, R&B, blues, rock -- and grafting it onto his own arrangements. The music is sincere, honest, heart-felt, but not yet fully his own. There is no separating the musician from his history in the years represented here, and if a single mood dominates, it'd be wistful melancholia. But listening to this now in Low County's wake, the direction and intent is clear. Any of the material on this anthology that Allman now performs has become fully, completely his own in mood, tone, sound, content. He has fulfilled the promise of his early years, the promise demonstrated on every song in this collection. Low Country Blues is the natural progression and reclamation of an original artist's legacy, and it begins right here on One More Try. |
