5.0 out of 5 stars Life in these United States
Another funny book from the "My First Presidency" people, this is a skewed guide to life in America. The highlights are the "Dating and Sex" and "Cuisine" sections, but the drawings are hilarious throughout. The illustrations about college drinking would have had milk shooting out of my nose, were I drinking milk at the time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny, but in three hours, you're hungry again
You'll blitz through through this 141-page book in about two hours. It has some really funny stuff in there, written in a snarky Conan O'Brien-style fashion.

The problem is, about three hours after finishing the book, I remembered very little of it. I think much of that has to do with the weak production value of the book. As noted elsewhere on this page, "One...

4.0 out of 5 stars One nation, one book and poor paper, hold the cheese., October 20, 2002
This review is from: One Nation, Extra Cheese: Your Guide to the Bestest Country Ever (Paperback)
Another (almost) winner from the folks at Modern Humorist. A very comprehensive guide to the bestest nation on earth and when you get to the last page to read `By the time you finish reading this page, 3.000 Americans will take a bullet, three million will super-size their Happy Meals and three will pass a geography test. Still, this nation is the envy of the world, except in Sweden, where government subsidies ensure all citizens have equal access to health care and erotica', perhaps you should book your ticket to Stockholm.

Scattered through the pages are Travel Tips or Fun Facts side-panels, spoof covers of books, magazines, greeting cards and dozens of really slick illustrations. These neat drawings are unfortunately wasted because of the really poor paper the book is printed on. This was a real disappointment to me, with better paper the excellent graphics would have made the book complete. The MH earlier book `Rough Draft', in color and on glossy paper was stunning, this latest offering, good as it is, doesn't quite make it though. Sorry guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible Not To Anti-Laugh At This Book!, August 31, 2002

This review is from: One Nation, Extra Cheese: Your Guide to the Bestest Country Ever (Paperback)
This book is a hidden cave of spectacular bounty.

The artwork is similar to those in-flight safety brochures you see in airplanes, except instead of pictures of people properly attaching life-vests to their bodies to prevent drowning, there are pictures of businessmen with exposed genitalia, children rollerskating into brick walls, and explanations of the different types of Hooters waitresses.

Overall, this book is well-written and amazingly graphixized -- it's definitely the best of Modern Humorist's Laff trilogy and worth checking out. There are samples of the book at ... Just check out their "Foreigner's Guide To America" stuff.

This is an excellent book. If you don't believe me, would you consider taking this outside? My fists need a punching bag, and I love settling differences in book opinions with bloody fights.

All the best!

The problem is, about three hours after finishing the book, I remembered very little of it. I think much of that has to do with the weak production value of the book. As noted elsewhere on this page, "One Nation..." is printed on about the worst paper imaginable, and the abysmal quality of the graphics defies description. If I were a writer of this book (it was a team effort), the final product would make me feel as if I were cheated.

Still though, this is funny enough to pass along to a friend when you're finished.

A short, generally amusing, easy reading book making fun of America in a style similar to The Onion. It knocks us down for our excesses and cracks wise about our collective ignorance. This is an excellent guide for literate foreign visitors--it should be especially funny to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amber waves of laughter, September 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: One Nation, Extra Cheese: Your Guide to the Bestest Country Ever (Paperback)
In many ways this book is a comical love letter to America with all of her contradictions, squabbling citizens, trashy pleasures and, yes, majestic Starbucks on every corner. Though full of scathing gags on political and social issues (guns, religion, fast food), you get the sense that the writers wouldn't want America any other way. (A suggestion for the sequel: more Rainbow Head!) The narrator of the book addresses readers from foreign lands, but the jokes and insights are meant to bring a smile to true blue Americans.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thin gruel, February 29, 2004
This review is from: One Nation, Extra Cheese: Your Guide to the Bestest Country Ever (Paperback)
This book would be perfect for serving fish and chips -- once you're done eating you can peer through the greasy pages for some post-lunch empty calories. not much here -- these fellers have essentially been nuked by The Onion and their work is kind of "Onion for Dummies" -- something as necessary as owning a home yogurt maker. Time for these lads to get some real jobs -- their "modern humor" has the distinct whiff of old hatband.
