5.0 out of 5 stars From zero scores with their debut One Nation Under

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a trendsetter, but definitely better than most.
(Man, why am I on a nu-metal kick for?)

From Zero wasn't the greatest or baddest nu-metal band out there, but they were pretty good. Behind the singer's goofy antics was some half-way decent songs with some memorable hooks in them. I'll still attest that the song "Check Ya" was probably their brightest and maybe best, but if you're a fan of early-2000's...

Adrenaline. chaos. substance. All are words that describe the debut CD One Nation Under by From Zero. These 5 men from the metal capital of the world (Chicago) vent their fears, angers, hopes, and passion into one irisistable album that kicks today's metal into overdrive. With such anthems of revolution as "Smack" and "Erase", it proves that they disserve all the recognition and more then they have received from radio stations nation wide. With fans on every continent, From Zero have proven them selves to similar acts as Sevendust and Taproot. With the "throw your fist in the air" melodies in "Check ya", and the heart-pumping riffs in "Jeer", you wont ever take this CD out of your stereo, car, or walkman. Simply put, it is the most indispensable CD to hit stores in the last year. From Zero is worthy of the reputation given to Chicago acts like Disturbed, Relative ash, Stabbing Westward, and Soil. One whole length through this album with out a doubt, you will "run for cover when the ZERO comes to get ya!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Need more attention and recognition, July 26, 2001

This is one of the strongest debuts I have ever heard. I consider these guys to be one of the three top nu-metal bands with Sevendust and Disturbed. Jett's vocals are amazing, whether he's choosing to be intense or subtle. The production on this album is superb-the sound quality is very precise. "The Other Side" is the best written song, a beautiful yet eerie piece that picks up in the middle with some wonderful vocal tradeoffs between shouting and harmony singing. As far as tap your foot, rock out ...songs go, the first single "Check Ya" needs radio airplay and MTV airplay very soon. "Erase" is even better. The vocals on "Circumstances" are so catchy it's ridiculous and "Horrors" is worth listening to every time just for Jett's addictive line: "We're all just who-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-hores." The best guitar driven song is definitely "Suffering", which has an opening riff that could have been written for 80s metal fans, and that's me too. Overall, if you like metal with REAL vocals, this is the cd for you...jeez these guys need a bigger push, there so good it's scary!

4.0 out of 5 stars For those conflicted, August 11, 2001

I bought this at Target, I won't lie. I was thinking about buying it on Amazon, but then I spotted it at Target for $8 and figured what the hell. And for $8 it's a really good deal. From Zero seems like a musical combination of Sevendust and Likin Park. This isn't a good way to find that grail that most nu-metal fans are seeking (perfect originality, something new), but as far as good goes, if bands like Disturbed and System of a Down are your zennith, then for for you From Zero will be just a step up from average. If you prefer the stylings of Sevendust or bands like them, you should seriously consider picking this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden gem of a disc, September 25, 2003
This review is from: One Nation Under (Audio CD)
It's astonishing this band hasn't taken off with a hulk of mainstream success. As far as nu-metal goes, From Zero has one of the better sounds in the genre's pantheon. Melodic singing, tight riffing, catchy song structures (check out the chorus on "Erase," or the infectious melody of "The Other Side")...this band has the necessary constituents for success. However, success has apparently eluded them while other inept bands garner all the attention. Then again, I'd rather pay less than ten bucks for this strong album than shell out almost eighteen for a Trapt CD. But don't take it from me; GET THIS DISC!!!

Not bad. Especially if a softer side of nu-metal is for some reason closer to you.

A lot of melody shining through the usual heaviness, highly professionally played instruments, and impressing vocals are what offered to enjoy on the cd. Not that heavy, not too poppy, aimed to the masses that appreciate a mainstream melodic heavy rock.

The real stand-outs are Smack, Erase, Other Side, Jeer, Tomorrow's Light, Suffering, and Gone.

After this one you may easily switch to their recent album.

I just recently discovered From Zero and i absolutly love them! 'SMACK' is THE best song in the world, i cant stop listening to it and i get chills up my spine when i do. It truly is a heart-captivating, stop-and-make-you-think-song. The sheer beauty of the lyrics and song all together are amazing. This is pure talent. The other songs are awesome as well, but smack, smacked me and is stuck with me now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, melodic hard rock...much talent here, September 9, 2002
This review is from: One Nation Under (Audio CD)
From Zero's debut is one that should be commended for its musicality. It follows the tried and true hard rock formula that any metal and hard rock fan will know well (sometimes screaming, sometimes melodically crooning vocals; deep, distorted guitars; not too fast pulse; etc.) but it takes song writing to a level that is rarely found in hard rock debut albums.

The musicianship in this group is something I found particularly good, and you can hear how, specifically, the drummer does a great job keeping up with a very complicated pulse. He is definitely not afraid to play fast and technical beats over a slower song, and the variety he uses (along with each of the musicians) is what makes each verse something different and keeps the sound from getting repetitive. The basics are the same, and there is a definite pattern, but with one listen you'll notice that variety was their key-word when creating this catchy and easy-to-listen-to metal album. From this and the deep lyrics you can see that this group is very emotionally into music, and puts emotion directly into every note; this is what causes the variety: the group stresses rhyming lyrics differently depending on what the words are, literally.

So, while this group is certainly not the revolution of hard music, the mature songwriting will keep you playing this disc and possibly overlooking some of your old favorites that might bore you in the diversity area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something DIFFERENT, May 27, 2002
This review is from: One Nation Under (Audio CD)
Bands like this are what we need in the music business. From Zero is just straight out ROCK...finally! This isn't that depressing, whiny, broing, nu metal BULL... The lead singer also has a great voice that goes great with the music. Best of all...he doesn't try too hard to rap! I wish this band had a little more recognition though. They have more talent and better style than most of those bands out bands out there {Puddle of Mudd). Its amazing because every song on this cd is great, and it gets better everytime you listen to it. My suggestion is if your tired of nu metal bands, go out and get this cd (used is better). Advice: Don't go overboard trying to "Discover" new bands and buying tons of cds. Save your money. Wait till you find a band that is really good to get their cd. I've made this mistake too many times...now i have a cd case full of generic poo[stuff like ENDO, No One, Drowning Pool, Pressure 4-5, Systematic]. You can't go wrong on this one though, no matter what style of music you listen to, whether hardcore, pop, or even rap!

Standout tracks are Check Ya, Erase, Other Side, and Jeer. I think Jeer is my favorite because its a heavy rap-core song with a great chorus and great rifts, strongest on the cd.
