More About the Author
Typical New Zealanders, Shelley and her husband left home for their big OE soon after they married (translation of New Zealand speak - big overseas experience). A year long adventure lengthened to six years of roaming the world. Enduring memories include being almost sat on by a mountain gorilla in Rwanda, lazing on white sandy beaches in India, whale watching in Alaska, searching for leprechauns in Ireland, and dealing with ghosts in an English pub.
While travel is still a big attraction, these days Shelley is most likely found in front of her computer following another love - that of writing stories of romance and adventure. Other interests include watching rugby (strictly for research purposes), cycling, baking bread and curling up with a good book.

Blurb: He wears his scars on the outside. She keeps hers safe inside.
Charlotte Dixon ignores her stepmother's edict and, in an act of disobedience, attends one of the social events of the year--a masquerade costume ball. Charlotte's naughtiness escalates when she dances and smooches with a sexy mystery man. The night of anonymous passion that follows makes her yearn for a different life, but the next day she's back to her dull routine of household management.
Advertising tycoon, Ash Marlborough is about to set a private investigator on the trail of his nameless princess when she waltzes right into his place of work. Charlotte is shocked to meet her masked man in the flesh, and even more perturbed when he asks her out on a date. Despite craving another night of sexy loving, she doesn't have time for a man, not when she wants to reinvent herself and grasp a new, improved life with both hands. But Ash knows what he wants, and he's determined to win the heart of his princess. Let the dance of seduction commence.
Warning: Contains a conniving stepmother, selfish stepsisters, a grandmother with fairy godmother tendencies and a sexy masked man who is willing to face them all for the love of a good woman.
Thoughts: "Do you think it's possible to die from sexual frustration?"
Don't let the old Cinderella fairytale ideal fool you - this a great story with scorching sex, and a real page turner. Other than the whole step-family, the happily ever after, and them treating her like a slave, it really doesn't hold to much with the old tale. It doesn't detract from the story at all.Read more ›
She meets a sexy masked Zorro at the costume ball her grandmother manipulates her into attending and she shares a night of passion with him after the ball. Then it's back to her mundane life of cooking and cleaning for her family.
Until her grandmother arranges a job interview at Marlborough Media. Then she's confronted with her masked man who's the owner of the company and her potential new boss.
Ashley Marlborough is called "The Beast" by the media because of extensive burn scars he suffered when caught in the fire that killed his mother when he was a child. He's considered a player because he doesn't stay with one woman long, but in reality he doesn't want to be used for his money. He wants to be loved for himself.
Once he starts pursuing Charlotte, he realizes that she isn't interested in his money; she likes him for himself. But she's extremely skittish and highly values her independence since she's been unpaid maid labor for her family for years. And he really has his work cut out for him convincing Charlotte that he's truly interested in committing to her.
I really enjoyed this twist on the Cinderella story. Having the man have to work for the woman's commitment is one of my favorite tropes. And Charlotte made Ash work for it until the very end.

Charlotte and Ash meet at a masquerade charity ball and end up in bed together when their attraction to one another overwhelms them both. They soon discover each other's true identities and begin to deal with the obstacles of being in a relationship together.
Charlotte lives with her stepmother, two stepsisters, and her step-grandmother. Charlotte's stepmother and sisters treat her horribly, but Charlotte stays to take care of Ivy, her step-grandmother whom she adores. The loss of both of her parents and the years of mistreatment by her step-family make it difficult for Charlotte to trust or feel worthy of anything positive in her life.
Ash has scars from horrible burns he received when he was younger; he also has a successful business and millions in the bank. Ash is hounded by the press and beautiful women who usually can't stand to look at him but are willing to hang around in hopes of gaining access to his money. Luckily these two have a "fairy godmother" (aka Ivy) helping them overcome some of their obstacles.
I really enjoyed this story. It was a light, fun read with some great characters. I enjoyed the fact that the main characters discovered each other's identities quickly so that the story could focus on the development of the relationship. There were some unusual obstacles and plot twists thrown in which I didn't feel was necessary, and I would've liked to see some of Ivy's early matchmaking scheme, which was only alluded to.
The characters were honest with real concerns and struggles, and the plot was very enjoyable. The author does a good job writing about opposites attracting and finding commonalities, and the challenges of overcoming personal demons.

I was a little afraid to read this book, honestly. I have read quite a few fairy-tale retellings in the last year or so, and none of them have been very impressive. Read morePublished on July 3, 2013 by Ionia Martin
