At a friend's wedding Marcee Robbens & Sam McKelvey meet and share one night of passion. A month later they find they're next door neighbors, Marcee raising teenage half brother Cam, widower Sam raising teen daughter Fern.

After Sam started having sex with Marcee again, he turned into a jerk, gave her no respect, honor, compassion or caring, just used her. He snuck in through her back door, had sex with her & snuck back out in the dead of night. The only places he took her there was NO CHANCE they'd be seen by anyone. When Marcie asked Sam to go out in public he always refused. He never stood up for her when someone insulted her but would be thinking what became his standard line, "They got it all wrong." yet never told them any different.

He said he didn't want to make their "dating" public because Fern would be upset with him "seeing someone". Yet he had no problem with everyone in town, including Fern & Marcee, assuming he & Paula were "seeing each other." Apparently he thought Fern would only be upset if it was Marcee because Sam thought she wasn't good enough for him, just like he didn't think Cam was good enough for Fern. Sam & Paula held hands and played couples horse shoes at a cookout right in front of Marcee & Fern. Paula to Sam, "What's your favorite kind of pie, I'll bake it for you Thursday night." When Paula hurt her foot Sam picked her up and carried her to her house without a goodbye or backward glance to Marcee. He constantly humiliated her.

Fern asked Marcee & Cam to have coffee with her & her dad. Paula showed up and sat with them. Nosy Mrs. Applebee came along and to Sam, "How nice to see you & Paula together again." Sam thought, "She's gotten it all wrong. He was here with Marcee not Paula." but again never said a thing. Later when Marcee told Cam that Sam asked her to go out with him to breakfast, Cam; "We both know that was Fern's idea. When Mrs. Dees stopped by the table he certainly didn't act like you were anymore than a neighbor." His deputy, "You're thinking about your big date with Paula. Dorothy Applebee told me about running into you two. Doesn't sound like just friends to me." Ron was one of the people who said insulting things to, & about, Marcee.

Sam runs into Mrs. Applebee, "I heard you & Paula are quite the couple. Sharing a picnic dinner, pitching horseshoes together, walking hand in hand." Sam, "Last night was the first time we met." "First or fiftieth, when the attraction is there, it's there." "That's true." Sam said, supposedly thinking about Marcee. "My oh my, you are smitten." Then Sam to Fern, "She completely misunderstood what I was talking about." Of course she'd assume he was talking about Paula since he made sure no one knew he & Marcee were together in any way.

Sam went to Paula's for dinner; everyone knew and assumed they were a couple. This dinner took place long after he & Marcee were involved again. He didn't want Fern to think he was "seeing someone" then why was he apparently dating Paula? Cam had it dead on, "He sleeps with you yet Mrs. Dees is the one he asks out." Marcee said Paula asked him out not the other way around, Cam, "Same difference, she asked, he accepted." Sam was ashamed of Marcee. About keeping his "relationship" with Marcee a dirty little secret he said he didn't want to "feed the gossip mill" or become the "subject of idle speculations". But it was OK for everyone to assume his romance with Paula, including Paula.

When someone came to Marcee's FRONT door (unlike Sam) he hid in a closet. It was Paula dropping off rolls for Marcee but couldn't stay because she had to pick up things for the dinner she was making for Sam & Fern the next night! Never did Sam consider he was hurting Marcee, as long as he got sex. "You're his booty call. Nothing more." Cam said. Marcee finally told Sam, "You don't want to date me. You just want to ____ me."

Frankly this book depressed me & Sam disgusted me. Too bad because I thought I'd found a new writer but anyone who writes about a woman being treated like garbage by a supposedly "good man" isn't what I want to read. The only reason I gave this a three was because of the secondary relationship between Cam & Fern and I liked Marcee who deserved so much better than Sam who deserved to be left with no one.

After a steamy night together, Sam is quick to say goodbye and although she is hurt, Marcee knows that she has to move on. She's recently been given custody of her teenage brother and she is forced to move back to the town that she couldn't wait to leave. Imagine her surprise when her new neighbor turns out to be Sam. A widower with a teenage daughter, Sam is determined to be a better father than he was a husband. He wants to make up for all the times work kept him from being the parent he should have been. Before long Sam and Marcee are involved in a secret affair, secret because Sam is determined to put his daughter first in all things, even though he's falling in love with Marcee. But what Sam sees as putting his daughter first, Marcee sees as Sam being ashamed to be seen with her. Even though her heart wants her to stay with Sam how long will Marcee continue to be his secret affair?

Talk about a good time! One Night Stand is a captivating story that pulls on the heartstrings with every page. Sam and Marcee are characters that quickly endear themselves to the reader, keeping the pages turning, waiting for the happy ending. I'll be watching for more from Cindy Kirk!

5.0 out of 5 stars fans will enjoy this fine small town romanc, May 4, 2008
This review is from: One Night Stand (Mass Market Paperback)
At the wedding of her best friend in Chicago, Marcee Robbins looks forward to a one night stand with a guest-stranger. Due to a crying little boy, she meets widower Sam McKelvey. The widower police detective Sam and the unmarried CPA Marcee discuss his daughter and living in a small town. Later they go to her room for a night of sex

Several months later, Marcee returns to her hometown of Ellwood, a place she vowed to never go back, to care for her younger step-brother Cam. She stops at the bakery run by her high school best friend Iris, who is glad to see her. Not long afterward town sheriff Sam enters. Both are stunned to see one another and Marcee looks at her bracelet "Reach High" to remind her she is here for one year and wants no trouble. She tells Sam to tell no one about their one night stand.

Marcee goes to her family home only to have another stepbrother Cam's guardian Tom leave before he introduces her to Cam, who is asleep. Sam grabs Marcee frightening her before kissing her. He mentions his daughter Fern is out with a punk named Cam. She tells him Cam is her brother and she knows Fern as the friend of the daughter of her best friend. As Marcee falls in love with Sam, she also finds she cares deeply for Cam, but soon must choose between the two men in her life as her lover thinks her brother is not good enough for his daughter.

The prime support cast is solid and adds depth to the story line especially the lead female's brother. However, it is the romance between the lead couple that makes this a fun contemporary as he stereotypes her brother while she feels she must choose between her sibling and her soulmate. Although too much coincidence enables the plot to move forward, fans will enjoy this fine small town romance.

I was hoping when I picked up this book, that it would be a fun, quick, light read. And I am happy to say that it delivered! The story was predictable, the characters weren't too deep, but it makes a perfect beach read. If you see this book, I would definitely pick a copy up.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a keeper, the story is flat, and the characters are rather dull, July 19, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: One Night Stand (Mass Market Paperback)
Basically, I think it is a "MEH" story. There is nothing really stand out. The chemistry between Sam and Marcee feels lacking, the story and conflict feels flat, and there are some typos which irritate the hell out of me. I cannot stand it when a published book have wrong character names printed. And it is not just one BUT two typos here.

In fact, in this book, I think I prefer the secondary story the most - the story about Sam's daughter and Marcee's younger stepbrother. Surely not a keeper and I'm not looking forward to check out her other books.
