Book Description

WELCOME TO SCUD CITY -- THE WORST TOWN IN AMERICA

Scud is the kind of cesspool that's heaven if you want good drugs, dirty sex, and a nightly brush with death, and hell if you want anything else. And of all the decaying brothels and meth-spas in the city of dead dreams, One-Night Stan's is the last place any distinguished human would set foot, the kind of sleazy strip club where the floors are linoleum, the air is cigarette smoke, and the night isn't over till somebody's a corpse.

Over the course of one excruciatingly long night, two college students stumble across an orange duffel bag stuffed with hundred-dollar bills and they find themselves the target of a coke-fueled night club owner, a vicious nymphomaniac stripper who gets her jollies slicing extremities off others with a butterfly knife, and a Russian bouncer who once ripped a man in half "the long way." As their wild night goes progressively off the rails, their paths cross with an unprofessional and strangely hostile FBI agent who has arrived in town on the trail of a serial killer--a serial killer who has been carving up dancers on a cross country tour of seedy strip joints, but who may have just stumbled into the wrong club.

MEET THE LOCALS

Jeremy: The kind of futureless twenty-something who spends three nights a week at nudie bar hating the present and crossing his fingers he'll end up in a new city one day, he doesn't exactly have the judgment necessary to steal $250,000 in blood money.

One-Night Stan: Stan just wants to be Frank Sinatra, but he never will be. He's a classless night club owner with anger issues and one hell of a coke problem who will never reach the level of coolness to which he aspires.

Ginger: This whackjob probably stepped out of a propaganda horror film warning teens about sex. An employee of Stan's, she's a seductress who can only get her rocks off inflicting pain on men, and she hasn't been satisfied in weeks.

Caleb: The best and worst friend a college kid could ask for. When a group of sex-crazed gymnasts want you to come with them to sacrifice a dog to Satan, he's the friend who threatens to physically harm you if you say no.

Leonard: A city like Scud demands an owner like Leonard, a handsome scumbag with his hand in the pockets of every politician, gangster, and law enforcement official in a ten mile radius.

Russian Bob: It takes an expat from Russia to work as a bouncer at One-Night Stan's. One of the local legends about Russian Bob is he once killed a cop with a stapler for stepping on his foot.

And More -- Between a quietly depressed stalker-nerd, a woman whose not above screwing and killing strangers for quick buck, and a jaded serial killer with an unlikely day job, there's no shortage of characters to be met in Scud City.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A story meant to be read and re-read...[Greg Sisco's] words are better than alcohol, drugs, and great sex combined." -JKP, The Manicheans

From the Author

One-Night Stan's was inspired by the films of Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. I wanted to write a piece of thriller fiction that produced a similar effect, that feeling when you suppress your laughter because you don't want others to know how sick your sense of humor is. This is the kind of crime thriller you don't tell your loved ones you've read. I hope it will function as a piece of thrilling crime fiction for more civilized readers, and a brutal black comedy for those who don't mind laughing when a normal person might cover her eyes and squeal.

-Greg Sisco

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbingly funny! January 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a fast paced comedy of errors with a high body count. There are lots of funny, engaging characters who are after the same bag of stolen money, cases of mistaken identity that don't end well, and it all made me laugh out loud while I was reading. This was a very bloody, disturbing, and humorous book. Highly recommended for anyone with a twisted sense of humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! January 17, 2012
By LauraK
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I agree with another reviewer that this book reads like a movie. I could see the scenes as I read. It is filled with an ensemble of crazy, messed up, twisted individuals. The quest for the case of stolen money is like a tornado that whips around town, snatching people up, spinning them around, then spitting out their mangled corpses. Mistaken identities, bad decisions, alcohol and drug abuse, graphic violence, and profanity abound. It is shocking, sickening, intriguing, but somehow funny as well. I don't know how to describe how a book can be violent and gross and humorous at the same time, but if you just take my word for it and read the book you will see. The humor is inappropriate and wrong, but I still found myself laughing out loud while reading the book. The murder and mayhem are entertaining, but what takes the book from good to great is that the plot is very well-constructed, with several story lines, each with surprising twists, that continuously overlap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder, Sex, Hilarity! October 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a wickedly funny but devilishly macabre novel with a number of violent deaths, innumerable instances of sex (mostly perverted), and marvellously funny. You'll feel guilty about enjoying yourself while reading this and wonder how can murder, sex, and perversion be so funny. Thank Mr. Sisco because he has taken the genre that we associate with authors like Hiaasen and taken to the not-for-the-squeamish level. Be aware that this book contains much foul language, many people being violently killed and mutilated, and lots of sex.

If Quentin Tarrantino and David Lynch were snapped up by evil space aliens, co-joined, and amped up on meth, cocaine, and steroids, they might have produced a story like this one. Read more

More About the Author

There are two personality traits I can recall possessing for just about as far back as my memory will serve. The first is a love of writing and the second is a malicious sense of humor.

Since childhood, I have been the person who roots for the bad guy in movies and laughs when Bambi's mom gets shot. I take interest in the flaws of a character far more than the heroic characteristics, which have a tendency bore me. I find humor in places I'm told I really shouldn't.

I started writing short stories and screenplays shortly after I learned to construct a sentence and haven't stopped since. As a high school student I wrote and shot home movies in my spare time while performing stand up comedy weekly at a talent show. I also wrote short stories with titles like Teacher Slayers (for which I am still astounded that I was not expelled).

My writing is typically bleak and violent with a fun, satirical edge that should tickle the funny-bones of anyone who is as sick as I am.
