Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"One Night With A Rock Star" will always hold a special place in my heart since it represents those heady days when I fell passionately in love with writing.
In the summer of 2005, I woke from a dream involving a favorite singing star and a much younger me. It was simple enough, about a chance encounter that progressed no further than a flush-faced request for an autograph, but it lingered, much like a hypnotic melody with lyrics that demand exploration.
Later that week, we took a family trek up the coast of California. My youngest kids were 2 and 4 years and by the third day of action-packed travel, one was crying and the other needed a barf bag held to her mouth, so I deposited myself between them in the back of our van. Finally, with a small head snoozing on each shoulder, I leaned back and reveled in hours of unexpected peace.
Usually I might not have allowed the daydream. After all, dwelling on a man other than my husband surely was wrong, but I was too tired to fight it. Thus, as the miles ticked away, a wonderful story unfolded in my mind.
By the time we arrived back home, the first few pages were recorded on a legal pad. Every spare moment in the coming weeks found me tapping away at our kitchen computer. I have to laugh when I recall uttering the naïve words, "I wish I had three or four uninterrupted days so I could just type away and get this out of my system."
For an entire month, I survived on three or four hours of sleep per night and, due to the fun I was having thinking like a giddy twenty-year-old, a round-the-clock infusion of pure adrenalin.
By page 100, hubby and I realized this was more than just some little story so, bless his heart, he bought me a laptop. I, however, still had no clue as to the scope of this journey.  Even ten months later, when I finally finished the first draft of "Rock Star," I was blissfully ignorant that a great story wasn't even fifty percent of the equation when it comes to being an author, at least an author whose stuff actually gets read. But I was hooked. I'd never stop writing--with or without a publishing contract or loyal fans.
However, I was also fully convinced "Rock Star" needed to be read. In a day when morals are a quaint artifact, this tale of a young woman sticking to what's right even when her fantasy is presented on a silver platter struck at the heart of our society's cancer of lives shredded by lack of a moral compass. Therefore, I purposed to do whatever it took to craft and polish a story with the power to woo jaded editors with piles of unread manuscripts--who might even disagree with my worldview.
So I took the advice of an author friend and read books about self-editing and writing tips from noted authors. A steep learning curve can be discouraging, but Rock Star was the perfect therapy, spurring me on through intensive rewrites and the wonderful new world of rejection letters.
Through the highs and lows of the journey, my husband and kids provided constant encouragement. My oldest son, the first guinea pig, laughed at all the right moments and begged for more then told me, "Mom, this is just as good as Harry Potter--in its own way." His loyal praise was my first taste of that sweet nectar--connecting with someone else's heart through the written word.
But my goal had become much more than just the head-trip of hearing a reader's praise.  I was beginning to have the audacity to think I could make a difference. More and more the a.m. prayer sessions were an overwhelming longing to reach out and stop someone from an unthinking leap off a cliff. But how? To have that effect, to reach as many as possible with a great story that also sparks a life course-correction, would demand even more of a stroll outside my comfort zone.
I figured, once the hearts have been opened by the story, that's the perfect soul-searching moment. So I developed study questions to accompany each section of Rock Star. But there was another roadblock. Now that I'd written this honest, edgy, but not gratuitous novel, what publisher would want it? I had unwittingly written myself into no-man's land since Rock Star wasn't as neat and tidy as most Christian publications. The characters, even the "bad guys," were multi-faceted and none were inherently good or evil, yet from a non-religious point-of-view, the heroine's reliance on pleasing God wasn't believable. Therefore, from a strictly business viewpoint, I could understand the quandry. Too edgy for the Christian market + too moral for the non-religious market + an untried author = publishing risk.
Since 2006, that code has changed somewhat, but at the time, the outlook for finding a publisher for Rock Star was decidedly bleak and I was getting the impression the publishing world would rather find good writers and then transform them into short-order cooks willing to pump out what's "hot" at the moment. Again, as a business, the focus was on the bottom line--profit. I got it.
But I never stopped believing there was a market for Rock Star. If nothing else, people like me were the perfect target, those who have deep convictions, who are still immersed in "the real world" where their way of life is an eye-opener and/or an irritation to those around them. Besides, even after delving into the novel day after day for years, I still loved it. It still got to me. And I continued to get rave reviews from those few who read it in its Kinko's-published form. Surely that said something.
Every now and again, when frustration, chaos or disillusionment leaves me with nothing but a big, fat, "Why do I do this?" I pull out Rock Star to remind me of those first heady months of literary courtship. And once more the passion is restored.
I told my oldest son that he would always have a special place in my heart because he was the firstborn, the one that changed me into a mother. That's what Rock Star will always be: my firstborn novel--the one that changed me.

From the Back Cover

The lights overhead spread into an ever-widening circle until I was bathed in an intermittent searchlight. Sky saw me. It was just a look, but it felt like a bolt of lightning. Sky's brows raised in an unmistakable "come hither" manner, the very look I'd always dreamed of. I knew one thing for sure.
     I was in deep trouble.
'Anne of Green Gables' Collides with 'Rattle & Hum.'
From the wide-open spaces of Texas to the castle-dotted Scottish Highlands, relish a tale that "draws you in like a hot cup of coffee on an icy winter's morning."

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring On the Sequel! May 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book drew me in like a hot steaming coffee on an icy Winter's day. The heroine was unconventional and beautiful, like a spark of life waiting to ignite. The hero was well...what any rock star should be..smokin'. In fact the whole time I read this book I could not get a vision of Gerard Butler out of my head. The sexual tension was fantastic, all through the ebb and tide of this tumultuous and sometimes downright frustrating relationship. There are many times when it looks like they will not be together and it drove me nuts while enticing me to read on the the end. And I am so glad I read the end, as you will be. Relationship with God is not lost in this book, it is everything it should be; real, gritty, honest and beautiful. I will be reading it over again, and making sure others do too. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it...Great story and page turner! May 9, 2013

I picked up Chana Keefer's book "One Night With a Rock Star" and couldn't put it down. I have to admit Sky drove me crazy for awhile in the book and wondered how it would all turn out. But, I loved the ending and can't wait for the next book. Looks like I may have to wait a couple years though :(

I also appreciated the author sharing a strong female character that maintained her morals and honored God even when it was tough. Great message for single girls!

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS STORY! July 9, 2013
By Kay R.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What does a 20 year old Christian woman do when she gets to meet the man of her dreams--a gorgeous, talented rock star, whose lifestyle leaves no room for God or faith? If they fall in love, will she abandon her faith and all her Godly convictions so she can fit into his rock star life? Or will her convictions change his mind and heart? This is such an angst-filled/hope-filled/fantasy-filled love story and well worth the read. I'm so impressed by Chana Keefer's storytelling and creation of lovable characters and interesting plot that kept me reading and wondering how it was all going to end. I can't say enough good things about this inspirational romance or its talented author.

Hi I just finished your amazing first book, One Night With A Rock Star! I read it in one night! Oh, no, do I have to wait until 2015 for the sequel? I also just purchased :The Fall, for my Kindle.
I'm so glad to know that there are Christian authors out there who stand up for their beliefs. I can only imagine what an impact your book has had and will have on many young people sturggling with so many morality issues. Thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and full of grace June 1, 2013
By Suzanne
Format:Kindle Edition
A young girl/woman's struggle with first romance, a young boy/man's struggle with honor and being in a relationship God's way. . . . . have you ever read a novel where the words jumped from the page like you were watching a movie? The writer was so descriptive with words that you actually felt like you were in the greenery of Scotland, the finery of an elegant home, the calm of a storm in the country in the comfort of an old barn, felt the joy of two people who were truly connected . . . . soulmates? If you haven't yet experienced writing this rich, then read Chana Keefer's "One Night with a Rock Star." You'll be transformed into another world, literally, and you'll return refreshed, hopeful and believing that God has a plan and his grace is sovereign. - Suzanne

5.0 out of 5 stars Why can I not give this more stars!!! July 22, 2013
By Abigail

Never in my life have I loved a book this much!!!! Never have I highlighted as many quotes as in this story! Never have I experienced this range of emotion from a novel! It is, without a doubt, one I will read over and over and over again. I wish it was available in a hard copy!
Before I was half way through it, I had already doubled over in laughter, fallen for Sky, felt for Esther and even I'm pretty sure my whole family thinks I'm insane for talking out loud to the characters all the time! By the end, I had cried some more, laughed some more, gasped, got angry, wanted to pull out my hair and even shouted aloud for joy! I couldn't put it down until I finished!! Everyone I know should read this book!

In so many ways, I have walked in the shoes of Esther....and hopefully my "Sky" isn't too far off!

I can't believe I have to wait until 2015 for the sequel:(

4.0 out of 5 stars One night and a lot of detail. July 22, 2013
By Jamie K
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have to admit when I finished this book I was not sure I even liked it. I have even waited a couple days to write a review because I just couldn't really make up my mind. Then it hit me. Of course I liked this book. Yes, its a story about a young lady whose dream of meeting her "dream man" came true but it is so much more.
Integrity is something that we as a society are some what lacking. So much so that even when it comes to our children we sometimes even think the worst. Eventhough we try our best to raise them with morals and Christian values that will not faulter, we sometimes doubt. Its quite sad. I read a lot of historical romance as well and in the eighteen and nineteen hundreds young ladies would come of an age and they would have a season. This is when they go to balls and dinner parties to meet young suitors. They were to ALWAYS be accompnied by a chaperone. Never were they to ever put themselves in a situation where their reputation could be in queston. Although, this is a tradition of the past, it is still a tradition that any young adult should hold themselves to. Simply because, people are always going to try to destroy your reputation. Especially, if you are a Christian trying to live a Godly life. People just seem to get such a kick out of bringing down someone elses character whether it maybe true or not.
In this story the young lady, Esther, is a college student studing to be a journalist. She is a Christian and she has been on a couple mission trips that seem to have made such an impression on her life that she wants to use her degree to help those she has missioned to in the past. She runs into situations where she is able to share her faith and she does. No shame or discomfort. She simply shares the only thing that she knows to be held true.

More About the Author

This whole writer's journey caught me completely by surprise and, to this day, I'm a bit stunned by the ride.

Blame it all on prayer.

In 2004 I committed to pray every day, right out of the sack, for at least an hour. A year later I woke in the morning from a very cool dream. As the week went on, the dream wouldn't let go. It expanded in my brain until I HAD to start writing or just... explode. That story? One Night With a Rock Star. It's the novel that transformed me into a passionate storyteller. To quote one of my wonderful readers, Rock Star is, "what relationship with God looks like in the midst of sexual temptation."

Two years later, in the middle of prayer, I asked a question and God answered. I yelped in shock but also had to admit the answer made so many of my faith elephants-in-the-room make sense. For the next month, every morning began with more mind-blowing insights. When I showed the 250 pages of notes to my hubby and an author friend, they both said, "This needs to be a novel." The journey of writing THE FALL was much more than writing a novel. It was a pilgrimage that crushed, shaped and changed me; the way I think, the way I pray, the way I love, even the way I view current events.

Fast-forward to 2012. My family met Kemper Crabb, amazing missionary and Heavenly Servant. We laughed and cried with him as Kemper told many of his astounding stories of a life committed to "the salvation of souls & the alleviation of suffering." He had read The Fall and appreciated how I described the celestial realm, a realm he could see as he brought God's love to places of extreme suffering. Again God's plan involved bringing me outside the comfort zone. Again I held tight to His hand as I dove into a project that humbled me and further challenged me to lay all on the line for God's plan. His Kingdom come. His will be done. To the glory and honor of our Heavenly Father and His faithful servants down through the ages who sacrificed all as bond servants of Christ's love, I gratefully present Servant of the King: Memoir of Modern Apostle Kemper Crabb.

BTW, I'm a mom of four, married to the best man alive, have a background in broadcast journalism and, many moons ago, worked as a model and actress. I love old barns, old movies, hot chocolate chip cookies and someday I'd like to sail around the world. Guess I'd better learn to sail first.
