Book Description

February 4, 2003
A grown-up "once upon a time" kind of fairy tale about a beautiful princess who grew up in a castle high in the French Alps and an all-American male who was born and raised in Queens. Is it a match made in heaven? You must be kidding.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In her first single-title release, Bretton borrows from real-life royalty and tabloid sensationalism to breath life into Judith Krantz-style characters. Set in the fictional principality of Perreault, this seductive novel simmers with international intrigue, sex and betrayal. The pampered but industrious heroine is Princess Isabelle, whose lifestyle takes a downhill turn after being tossed out of the castle without so much as a franc by Juliana, her hateful older sister. Juliana has been groomed from birth to inherit the throne, which she does with a vengeance after their father dies. Inexplicably acquiescent-her only major character flaw-Isabelle flees to New York where she finds fame and fortune by cashing in on her royal title. Romance appears in the form of Daniel Bronson (read, Kennedy). Isabelle's newfound happiness takes a dangerous turn when she becomes pregnant-because her child, a boy, will loosen Juliana's hold on the throne. To what lengths will Juliana, her womanizing husband and her drug lord father-in-law go to retain control of Perrault? Stay tuned. This nicely plotted sizzler takes readers on an energetic romp through the world of the privileged class.

More About the Author

In the month of February 1982 I wrote and sold my first novel. And no, I wouldn't believe it either if it hadn't happened to me. I sent in my manuscript on Thursday February 21, 1982 and four days later the telephone rang and I heard the amazing words, "We want to buy your book." How I wish you could have seen me. I was standing by the kitchen door of our North Babylon house, the picture of cool sophistication, as I listened to Vivian Stephens explain the terms of the deal to me. You would have thought I'd sold a first book every single day of my life. Yes, I said. Sounds wonderful. Thank you so much for calling. I look forward to our association. That cool sophistication hung on until I hung up the phone, took a deep breath, then promptly threw up on my shoes.

I was thirty-one years old, unagented, unschooled, unfamiliar with anything to do with the business of publishing. To put it mildly, I was in shock. My husband was working in Manhattan at the time (and finishing up his degree at night) so it would be hours until I could break the news to him. This was too exciting to waste on a phone call. I wanted to see his face when I told him that my dream had finally come true -- and came with a $6000 advance!

He pulled into the driveway at midnight. I was waiting in the doorway, holding a bottle of champagne and two glasses. I didn't have to say a word. He knew right away and the look of joy and pride in his eyes warms me now, years later, long after the advance faded into memory.

Barbara Bretton is amazing, and writes romance like nobody's business. 'One and Only'is a fabulous fairy tale kind of love story between a beautiful, pampered yet independant princess and a hottie New York business tycoon. Barely out of her teens, Princess Isabelle is betrayed by the man she thought she loved and the older sister she once looked up to, when they announce their engagement. Things evolve into a tricky game of who's scamming who, but it still manages to take a backseat to the love story that grows between Isabelle and Daniel Bronson, a brash New Yorker who seems determined to treating her Royal Highness as just an ordinary girl. After a few heated, verbal sparring matches the two converge on a live New York talk show, as Isabelle strives to make a living after her sister exhiles her from the Palace. The heat between them is undeniable, and the pair decide to see where the sparks will carry them.

Barbara Bretton ( The Day We Met, A Soft Place To Fall) does a fine job of giving her readers a front row seat to beautiful, and sexy romances, as well as sweet and unforgettable love stories. Her descriptions of the fictional principality of Perrault give you just enough detail to form a clear and stunning picture in your mind without lulling you into a coma. Her characters are well written and have some of the wittiest conversations you'll find in romance novels. The sparring matches between Isabelle and Daniel will make you chuckle even as your heart rate quickens as you wait for the next embrace.

'One and Only' is a re-release (originally out in 1994), so if you did'nt get it then, pick this one up now. There's nothing better for curling up on a cool spring afternoon, than a romance by Barbara Bretton. Trust me, this love story will make you oooh and aaah till the last paragraph. Thank you Ms. Bretton for another winner !!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Romance!, July 10, 2003
This review is from: One and Only (Paperback)
I was very impressed by this love story, and it definitely deserves to be called a love story. Unlike a lot of romantic fluff that doesn't truly involve you, this book was rich in description and had characters that were full and believable. The storyline flowed from beginning to end, and the book followed the couple individually and as they grew as a couple. I never felt as if the relationship was contrived between the two lead characters, and the relationship they had with friends and family was just as interesting. In fact, there are several little twists that make the book very interesting before it's all over. When I read the back cover I was expecting a story that was going to involve a lot of travel and description of scenic locales, and I think that was the only let down about this book. Although the characters were flying back and forth between countries, the descriptions of the places were rather weak. Overall this is one of the best contemporary romances I've read in quite some time and I'm definitely interested in reading more from Barbara Bretton.

3.0 out of 5 stars A true love story, May 29, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: One and Only (Paperback)
I fell in love with Barbara Bretton with "Girls of Summer." While I did enjoy "One and Only", it didn't live up to "Shore Lights" and "Girls of Summer". While I detested Julianna and Eric, I did fall in love with Isabelle and Daniel.
