This review is from: The One and Only (Audio CD)
Kirsty Maccoll died prematurely and tragically. This disc does a good job of condensing her short, but high quality catalog of recordings, mostly in the new wave pop category. Certainly she was an insider, the daughter of an established pro and wife of pop producer Steve Lillywhite; her father Ewan wrote The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. I'm sure it opened doors for Kirsty, but she didn't rest on his laurels. She was ambitious in her own rite. Her almost hit recording They Don't Know became the sketchpad for the top chart version by Tracey Ullman. I prefer Ullman's version, but it's fascinating to hear the original. I hadn't previously heard the other songs on the album, but they are all high quality. I liked You Caught Me Out even more than They Don't Know, the song I bought it to hear. The mastering is very good with no obvious digital compression so common on popular music CDs.
